Setting the scene . . .
The Washburn Ichabods (9-8, 3-7 MIAA) have reached the halfway point of the MIAA grind and they will be looking for their third straight conference win as they play host to Nebraska-Omaha (14-3, 7-3 MIAA) on Saturday night in Lee Arena at 7:30 p.m. The Ichabods are coming off a 31-point drubbing of Emporia State on Jan. 16 in their last game. Nebraska-Omaha topped Pittsburg State last time out 83-59 at home. UNO won the first meeting between the two teams 80-72 in the conference opener for both teams on Dec. 2 in Omaha.

The Coaches. . .
Washburn Ichabod head basketball coach
Bob Chipman is in his 31st season at the helm of the Ichabod basketball program. For 24 years now Chipman has been the winningest coach in school history and in 2006-07 he became the second winningest coach as a member of the MIAA. Chipman is 671-272 (.716) overall and he has 423 wins since the Ichabods joined the MIAA - the most of any teams in the league since the 1991-92 season. Chipman is 2-2 against the Mavericks.
Nebraska-Omaha head coach Derrin Hansen is in his fifth year at Nebraska-Omaha and overall as a head coach. He is 83-53 with a .608 winning percentage. His winning percentage ranks fourth all-time among UNO coaches with at least four years at the school. Hansen served as the assistant coach at UNO from 1998-2005 before taking over for the 2005-06 season.
Hansen is a 1991 graduate of Nebraska Wesleyan. He played for the Plainsmen and helped lead them to the Division III semifinal in 1987-88. He coached high school for two seasons after graduating and then spent two years at Nebraska-Kearney from 1993-95 as a graduate assistant and two years at Mid-Plains CC from 1995-98.
Last time out for the Ichabods . . .
(Jan. 16, 2010) TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Ichabods won their second straight game tying the Turnpike Tussle series for Washburn largest margin of victory in a 73-42 win over Emporia State. The 31-point win tied Ichabod wins during the 1951-52 season (69-38) and during the 1998-99 season (83-52).
The Ichabods jumped out to a lead as many as 26 in the first half as
De'Andre Washington hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer giving the Ichabods a 38-12 halftime cushion going into the locker room. The Ichabods held the Hornets to just 3 of 22 shooting from the field for a 14 percent average while the Ichabods were 12 of 22 for a 55 percent average. The Ichabods also hit 5 of 10 3-pointers while ESU was limited to 1 of 13. The Hornets did not hit double-digit points until the 2:12 mark of the opening half.
In the second half, the Ichabods pushed the lead to 36 on a 3-pointer by
Mitch Allen with 48 seconds left while cruising to the 31-point win.
Washburn was led by
De'Andre Washington who scored 14 of his 19 points in the first half while hitting 6 of 9 attempts from the field including 4 of 5 3-pointers. William McNeill also hit double figures scoring 17.
Logan Stutz came off the bench just missing a double double with nine points and a game-high 12 rebounds.
Dustin Andrews and Lamar Wilbern each had 10 to pace Emporia State (7-9, 3-6 MIAA).
The Ichabods finished 24 of 50 from the field and the Hornets were 13 of 47 from the field. Washburn also hit 13 of 25 3-point attempts and 12 of 16 shots from the free throw line.
About Nebraska-Omaha . . .
Nebraska-Omaha's high scoring attack, featuring six players averaging over eight points per game, currently has four players scoring in double figures: junior guard Tyler Bullock (17.5 ppg), junior guard Jeff Martin (12.2 ppg), senior forward Dion Curry (11.6 ppg) and senior guard Andrew Bridger (11.6 ppg).
Junior forward Eugene Bain is leading the team with 7.4 rebounds (sixth best in the MIAA) to go along with 9.0 points per game. Bridger leads the Mavericks with 6.4 assists per game, good for best in the MIAA.
As a team, the Mavericks are shooting 50.1 percent from the field, 34.3 from 3-point range and 71.3 percent from the free throw line.
UNO's 85.3 points per game is good for third in the MIAA and the Mavs are ranked second in the league by only allowing their opponents to shoot just 41.3 percent from the field. UNO also leads the MIAA rebounding at 39.8 per game.
Last time out for the Mavericks . . .
(Jan. 20, 2010) OMAHA, Neb. - The Mavericks shot 55 percent from the field and had a big night from Tyler Bullock in an 83-59 win over Pittsburg State Wednesday at Sapp Fieldhouse.
Nebraska-Omaha wrapped up the first half of the MIAA season at 14-3 overall and 7-3 in the MIAA, staying in a tie for third place. The Gorillas fell to 7-10 and 1-9 in the league.
Bullock was 8 for 12 from the field and he had five steals. It was his seventh 20-point performance this year and UNO improved to 7-0 when he reaches that mark.
Andrew Bridger added 13 points with a 4-of-6 performance from the field and Torrian Harris came off the bench to score 12 points.
Eugene Bain led UNO with eight rebounds and Jamel LeBranch had five assists to lead the Mavs in that category.
The Gorillas built an 18-10 lead in the first seven minutes and then a 12-0 run for the Mavs erased that and gave them the lead for good. Bridger scored six points in that run. Two free throws by Bullock ended the run and put UNO up by four, 22-18 at the 8:37 mark.
An 11-0 run later in the half put the Mavs up by 13 and then UNO used a 4-0 run to close the half and lead 46-31 in the locker room.
The Gorillas shot just 31 percent in the second half and never got within single digits.
UNO shot 56 percent in the first half and 54 percent in the second half to finish 55 percent. The Mavs shot 36 percent from behind the 3-point line and 68 percent from the free throw line.
The Gorillas ended the game shooting 36 percent from the field and just 5 of 13 (39 percent) from the free throw line.
Rodney Grace led PSU with 17 points and Spencer Magana had 12.
Series Notes with Nebraska-Omaha . . .
Saturday's game is the 52nd meeting in school history and Washburn holds a 32-19 lead in the series. The Mavericks have won two of the three meetings since becoming an MIAA school last season. The two played at least once a year from 1947-48 through 1973-74, a period of 27 straight years. The series began in 1933-34 and WU won the first nine meetings. The Ichabods are 1-0 against the Mavericks in Lee Arena. Saturday's meeting will only be the third one played in Topeka since the 1973-74 season and only the second in Lee Arena. The Ichabods won the first meeting in Lee Arena on Dec. 3, 2008 in an 84-83 win over the Mavericks.
Last Meeting with Nebraska-Omaha . . .
(Dec. 12, 2009) -- OMAHA, Neb. -- A nearly six minute stretch without a field goal proved too much to overcome for the Ichabods as they fell 80-72 at Nebraska-Omaha on Wednesday night.
The first half was a back-and-forth affair with neither team leading by more than seven. Washburn (5-1, 0-1 MIAA) took a 17-14 lead with 10:23 remaining in the opening half on a jumper from
Dezahn Otis. A 20-10 run by the Mavericks (6-0, 1-0 MIAA) gave UNO a 34-27 lead with 2:23 to play in the period. The Ichabods closed the half with a 7-1 run and trailed 35-34 at the break.
A 7-3 run to start the second half gave WU a 41-38 lead with 17:16 remaining in regulation. The lead was 44-42 on a three from
Bobby Chipman when Washburn went into a nearly six minute scoreless drought. Nebraska-Omaha outscored the Bods 10-0 during that span and opened a 52-44 lead with just over 10 to play.
UNO pushed the lead to 11 with just over five to play before Washburn rallied. The Ichabods were able to get within five on two separate occasions, but could get no closer. The Mavericks made 10-of-12 free throws down the stretch to ice the game.
Washburn shot 40 percent, 25-of-62, from the floor, but just 39 percent in the second half. The Ichabods struggled from the foul line making 14-of-24 attempts for 58 percent.
De'Andre Washington led Washburn with 15 points, while
Dezahn Otis had 14 and
Bobby Chipman added a career-high 12 on four three-pointers.
Tyler Bullock led four Mavericks in double figures with 19 points. Andrew Bridger added 18 points and nine assists.

Washburn is 1,369-957 (.682 in 2,326 games) in its 104th season of intercollegiate action. The Ichabods are the ninth-winningest team in NCAA Division II history and the 26th winningest team this decade. The Ichabods are 428-186 since joining the NCAA Division II ranks, which is the most since the 1989-90 season in the MIAA.

The Ichabods are 337-61 (.848) all-time in Lee Arena - the 26th season of play. The Ichabods recorded a school-best 28-game winning streak from Nov. 19, 1993 to Feb. 8, 1995 in Lee Arena.
