Setting the scene . . .
The Washburn Ichabods (10-8, 4-7 MIAA) will look for their fourth straight MIAA win as they play host to Northwest Missouri (9-9, 4-7 MIAA) on Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m. in Lee Arena. The Ichabods and the Bearcats enter the game in a tie for seventh place in the MIAA standings. The Ichabods are coming off a 60-49 win over Nebraska-Omaha last time out while the Bearcats rallied from a 16-point first half deficit at Emporia State to beat the Hornets 84-79. The Bearcats won the first meeting with the Ichabods on Dec. 5 in an 81-73 win. Following Wednesday's game, the Ichabods will travel to Missouri Western to take on the Griffons on Dec. 30 and to Truman on Feb. 3 to face the Bulldogs before returning home for a three-game home stand beginning with Fort Hays State on Feb. 6.

Ichabods on Radio . . .
Ichabod games will be broadcast live on KTPK 106.9 FM. The game can also be heard on the internet at www.wusports.com by following the “Live Audio” link under basketball. Bruce Steinbrock will be the play-by-play voice of the Ichabods and former WU quarterback Mark Elliott will be the color analyst. Pregame show starts 15 minutes prior to tip.

The Coaches. . .
Washburn Ichabod head basketball coach Bob Chipman is in his 31st season at the helm of the Ichabod basketball program. For 24 years now Chipman has been the winningest coach in school history and in 2006-07 he became the second winningest coach as a member of the MIAA. Chipman is 672-272 (.716) overall and he has 424 wins since the Ichabods joined the MIAA - the most of any teams in the league since the 1991-92 season. Chipman is 31-17 against the Bearcats.
Northwest Missouri head coach Ben McCollum is in his first season as head coach at his alma mater. He spent three seasons as an assistant coach at Emporia State. He is 9-9 overall in his first head coaching position.

Last time out for the Ichabods . . .
(Jan. 23, 2010) TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Ichabods won their third straight game with two Ichabods recording double doubles while holding Nebraska-Omaha 36 points below their season scoring average in a 60-49 win over the Mavericks.
The Ichabods used a defense which limited the Mavericks to 29 percent shooting from the field (17 of 57) and held Nebraska-Omaha (14-4, 7-4 MIAA) without a field goal for the final six minutes of the game in the victory.
The Ichabods led by as many as 11 in the first half at 27-16 in the opening half before taking a 30-22 lead into the halftime locker room. Washburn held the Mavericks to 8 of 28 shotting from the field in the opening stanza. The Mavericks led by five a 9-4, but the Ichabods took the lead for good on a tip-in by Logan Stutz at 10-9 and the Mavericks would not lead or tie the remainder of the game.
Nebraska-Omaha cut the lead to one at 42-41 with 8:23 remaining on a 3-pointer by Andrew Bridger, but a traditional 3-point play on the Ichabods' next possession by Maurice Colter put the 'Bods up by four. The Mavericks again pulled within two at 45-43, but an offensive rebound and stick-back by William McNeill put Washburn back up by four and following a technical on UNO's Torrian Harris, Colter hit both free throw putting Washburn up by six at 49-43 with 6:33 to go.
After Harris hit the Mavs' last field goal drawing them back within three at 49-46 at the six-minute mark, a tip-in by De'Andre Washington and a 3-pointer by Colter stretched the lead to seven at 54-47 with 3:01 to go. The Ichabods would hit four of five free throws the remainder of the game for the 11-point win.
Washington led the Ichabods with 19 points and 12 rebounds recording his sixth double double of the season scoring 12 points in the second half. McNeill recorded a double double as well with 16 points and 10 rebounds for his four double double output of his career and the first of the season. Colter finished with 13 points.
Bridger and Harris each had 10 to lead the Mavericks.
The Ichabods held the Mavericks to 29.8 percent shooting from the field. UNO came into the game averaging 50.1 percent from the field during the season. Washburn finished 22 of 66 and held a 46 to 41 advantage on the glass. Eighteen rebounds on the offensive end led to 14 second chance points for the Ichabods.

About Northwest Missouri . . .
Northwest Missouri State is 9-9 and 4-7 in MIAA play on the season sitting in a seventh-place tie with the Ichabods. The Bearcats snapped a three-game losing streak last time out fighting back from a 16-point deficit to win at Emporia State in an 84-79 win on Sunday. Elijah Adams leads the Bearcats in scoring with a 17.3 ppg average. He is also averaging a team-high 5.5 rebounds per game. Also scoring in double figures per game is Topeka native Girod Adams at 16.5 ppg. DeShaun Cooper is scoring 11.9 ppg and Edriss Floyd is at 10.1 ppg.

Last time out for the Bearcats . . .
(Jan. 24, 2010) EMPORIA, Kan.—Elijah Allen had a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds as Northwest Missouri State defeated Emporia State 84-79. Jake Reinders scored a career-high 15 points and five rebounds, while Girod Adams added 14 points and six assists. Bryston Williams and Edriss Floyd had 11 and 10 points respectively.
After trailing by as many as 16 points in the first half with 8:16 remaining, the Bearcats would go on a 20-7 run to end the first half to cut the halftime deficit to 36-33. The second half of play was a tight, back and forth battle that featured five lead changes and two ties. Allen's layup with 2:35 remaining in the ballgame put Northwest up 72-70 and they wouldn't trail again. The Bearcats led by as many as 10 points with 45 seconds remaining and would hold onto the victory by making free-throws down the stretch.
Northwest shot 52 percent from the field and hit seven three-pointers in the victory. The Bearcats also hit 21-of-23 from the charity stripe, while Emporia State shot 44 percent from the floor and hit 16-out of-26 from the free-throw line.

Series Notes with Northwest Missouri . . .
Wednesday's meeting will be the 88th between the two schools and Washburn holds a 54-33 lead in the series. Washburn swept the regular season series for the second straight season and have won four of the last six. Washburn swept the regular season series last year for the first time since 2004-05. The series dates back to the 1940-41 season and they have played each other every year since WU joined the MIAA in 1989-90. The Ichabods are 19-7 against the Bearcats in Lee Arena and have won the last two at home.

Last Meeting with Northwest Missouri . . .
(Dec. 5, 2009) -- MARYVILLE, Mo. -- The Washburn Ichabods shot 52 percent from the field in the second half coming up short for a seven-point halftime deficit but it was not enough as the Ichabods fell 81-73 at Northwest Missouri.
In the opening half, the Ichabods led by five at 22-17 with 7:25 to play in the period but the Bearcats went on an 18 to 6 run the remainder of the first half taking a 35-28 lead into the locker room.
The Bearcats stretched their lead to as many as nine in the opening minutes of the second half at 42-33 after a pair of free throws. The Ichabods cut into the Bearcat lead at 44-40 on a Logan Stutz fastbreak lay up with 15:08 to play in the game. The Bearcats went on a 8-0 run to go up by 12 at 52-40 with 12:52 remaining.
The Ichabods returned with a run of their own as Washburn cut the lead down to two at 58-56 with 9:31 on a William McNeill layup but the Ichabods would get no closer as the Bearcats would push the lead to as many as 12 in the second half.
McNeill led the Ichabods with a career high 21 on 9 of 11 shooting. He scored five points in the first half. De'Andre Washington scored 13 and Logan Stutz had 10.
Edriss Floyd had 20 to pace the Bearcat attack hitting 5 of 8 3-point attempts.
Washburn outshot the Bearcats in the game hitting 26 of 57 from the field while Northwest was 23 of 52. Northwest did hit 8 of 19 3-point attempts while Washburn was 3 of 13. The Ichabods also struggled at the free throw line going 18 of 29 while the host Bearcats were 27 of 34.
Washburn held a 40 to 32 advantage on the glass with 14 offensive rebounds leading to 16 second chance points for the Ichabods. The Ichabods committed a season-high 22 turnovers leading to 25 points for the Bearcats. The teams combined for 50 fouls with Northwest Missouri being called for 26.

Ichabod Basketball History . . .
Washburn is 1,370-957 (.682 in 2,327 games) in its 104th season of intercollegiate action. The Ichabods are the ninth-winningest team in NCAA Division II history and the 26th winningest team this decade. The Ichabods are 428-186 since joining the NCAA Division II ranks, which is the most since the 1989-90 season in the MIAA.

Ichabods In Lee Arena . . .
The Ichabods are 338-61 (.848) all-time in Lee Arena - the 26th season of play. The Ichabods recorded a school-best 28-game winning streak from Nov. 19, 1993 to Feb. 8, 1995 in Lee Arena. The Ichabods have won 15 straight regular season non-conference home games and 38 of their last 41 regular season non-conference games home.

Speaking of Lee Arena . . .
In the 26th season of play, the very first team to play in the arena, the 1984-85 squad has been invited back for a 25-year celebration on Feb. 6 when the Ichabods play host to Fort Hays State. The team led by Gary Carrier finished the season 26-9 and 10-4 in the CSIC placing second in the conference standings.

Washburn will hit the road to back-to-back games at Missouri Western on Jan. 30 and at Truman on Feb. 3. After the game with the Bulldogs, Washburn will have four of its final six games at home beginning with another three-game set with Fort Hays State on Feb. 6.
