Setting the scene . . .
The Washburn Ichabods (11-8, 5-7 MIAA) will look for for their fifth straight MIAA win as they will travel to St. Joseph, Mo., to face the Missouri Western State University Griffons. The Griffons (12-7, 7-5 MIAA) won the first meeting with the Ichabods on Dec. 28 in an 75-69 overtime win. The Ichabods are coming off a 78-62 win over Northwest Missouri while the Griffons were topped last time out 70-53 at Emporia State. Following Saturday's game, the Ichabods will travel to Truman on Feb. 3 to face the Bulldogs before returning home for a three-game home stand beginning with Fort Hays State on Feb. 6.

Washburn Ichabod head basketball coach
Bob Chipman is in his 31st season at the helm of the Ichabod basketball program. For 24 years now Chipman has been the winningest coach in school history and in 2006-07 he became the second winningest coach as a member of the MIAA. Chipman is 673-272 (.716) overall and he has 426 wins since the Ichabods joined the MIAA - the most of any teams in the league since the 1991-92 season. Chipman is 36-27 against Missouri Western.
Missouri Western head coach Tom Smith is in his 22nd year at Missouri Western and his 35th year overall. While at Missouri Western, Coach Smith has compiled a 411-223 record. Smith has coached the Griffons to 10 NCAA Division II national tournaments, five MIAA regular season championships and four MIAA postseason tournament titles. Overall Smith is 583-407 in his 35th season overall.
Last time out for the Ichabods . . .
(Jan. 27, 2010) TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Ichabods led from start to finish while recording their fourth straight win in a 78-62 victory over Northwest Missouri in Lee Arena on Wednesday night.
The Ichabods jumped out to a 14-point lead at 24-10 prior to the second media time out and stretched the lead to as many as 19 in the first half on two different occasions before taking a 39-21 lead into the locker room at the break. Washburn shot 45 percent in the first half hitting 14 of 31 attempts while holding Northwest (9-10, 4-8 MIAA) to 8 of 22 from the field.
After halftime, the Ichabods would keep the Bearcats in a double-digit hole until Northwest cut the lead to nine at 58-49 with 6:52 remaining in the game. But back-to-back 3-pointers by
Bobby Chipman and
De'Andre Washington pushed the lead back to 15 and the Bearcats would not get within 12 points the rest of the game.
William McNeill scored 10 points in each half finishing with a team-high 20 points while hitting 8 of 10 free throw attempts. Washington picked up his seventh double double of the season with 19 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. Washington also added a game-high seven assists.
Logan Stutz scored 11 points off the bench.
The Bearcats were led by Elijah Allen who recorded a game-high 21 points. Edriss Floyd scored 16 and Girod Adams scored 13.
Washburn finished the game shooting 50 percent from the field connecting on 24 of 48 shots finishing 4 of 10 from 3-point range. The Ichabods were also 26 of 35 from the free throw line. The 26 free throws made and 35 attempted were both season-highs for the Ichabods. Northwest heated up to 50 percent shooting in the second half finishing 20 of 46 for the game for a 44 percent average. Northwest was 17 of 22 from the free throw line.
The Ichabods held a 31 to 26 advantage on the glass and forced 14 turnovers leading to 20 points. The Ichabod bench also outscored the Bearcats 29 to 4.
About Missouri Western . . .
The Griffons are currently 12-7 overall on the season and 7-5 in MIAA play after falling at Emporia State 70-53. Marcus Rhodes lead the charge for Western averaging 15.7 points per game and shooting 55 percent from the field hitting 108 of 196 attempts. James Bush leads the Griffons on the boards with 6.1 rebounds per game. Dominique Thuston is averaging 13.8 points per game. The Griffons have hit 35 percent of their 3-point tries connecting on 144 of 408 attempts. Missouri Western is scoring 74.9 ppg while allowing 73.6 per contest. The Griffons have won their last seven home games.

(Jan. 27, 2010) EMPORIA, Kan. – The Griffons men were held to a season low 53 points in a 70-53 loss against the Emporia State Hornets on the road in Emporia, Kan. The Griffons road struggles continue as they fall to just 2-5 away from the fieldhouse. The Griffons fall to 12-7 overall and 7-5 in MIAA action.
The first half was a story of runs as the Hornets opened play jumping out to an 8-2 lead off three point shots by Jeremiah Box and Dustin Andrews. The Griffons answered with a un of their own scoring 15 of the next 19 points cutting the Hornet lead to 17-12 with 11:35 left in the half off a Marcus Rhodes tip-in.
Emporia scored the next five points extending their lead to ten at 22-12 after Box hit his second three of the game with 9:39 to play in the frame. Three jumpers by the Griffons, two by Justin Taylor and one by Mike DeWalt cut the Hornet lead to 22-19 with 7:07 to play.
Western continued to play hard but would go into the locker room trailing by five at 39-34. Western cut the Hornet lead to five off a Quentin Noblin three with two second remaining.
Both teams shot the ball well in the half with Western making 53.6-percent (15-28) from the field and Emporia hitting 61.9-percent (13-21). The difference in the first act was the Griffons made just 2-of-7 long range shots to the Hornets 5-of-10. The Hornets also made 8-of-9 free throws to the Griffons 2-of-2.
Western scored 18 points in the paint to the Hornets 16 but had just six assists to Emporia's 11. Western was led by Marcus Rhodes as he scored 10 points on 5-of-9 shooting. Box led the Hornets dumping in nine points on 3-of-4 from long range.
Dominique Thuston nailed a three with 17:04 to play giving the Griffons their first lead of the ball game at 41-40. The next nine minutes and 36 second would be an offensive struggle for Western as they scored just five points. By the time the stretch was done the Hornets had built their largest lead of the ball game at that point at 57-46 with 8:28 to play.
The Hornets dominated the rest of the way outscoring the Griffons 13-8 earning the 17 point victory and improving to 8-11 overall and 4-8 in MIAA play. The Hornets were led by Box as he dumped in a game high 15 points on 6-of-11 shooting. Tim Niles pitched in 12 while Dustin Andrews and Lamar Wilbern scored 11 respectively.
The Griffons were led by Thuston as he scored 11 points while Rhodes pitched in 10. Western scored a season low 19 second half points connecting on just 7-of-25 second half field goals. For the game Western made 22-of-53 shot attempts.
The Hornets shot 52.2-percent (24-46) in the game. ESU dominated the points at the free throw line making 16 to five at the charity stripe.
Series Notes with MIssouri Western . . .
Saturday's meeting will be the 76th meeting between the two schools with Washburn leading the series 43-32. The Ichabods are 20-17 against MWSU in MIAA games and 18-9 in Lee Arena. The two teams split last year's series with each winning its home game. Washburn had its four-game winning streak snapped in the last meeting on Dec. 28 in the first meeting this season. Missouri Western tied the series lead WU 4-4 in overtime games with the win in December.
Last Meeting with MIssouri Western ...
(Dec. 28, 2009) -- TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Ichabods rallied from an eight-point deficit with 1:34 to go in regulation to send the game to an extra period on a 3-pointer by
De'Andre Washington with 0.7 seconds to go but fell in overtime after the Missouri Western used a 12-0 run in the overtime period leading to a 75-69 Griffon win.
Coming down the stretch trailing by eight with 94 seconds to play, Washington recorded a traditional 3-point play cutting the Griffon lead to five with 1:25 remaining. After a pair of empty possessions for each team,
Nate Daniels hit the second of two free throws pulling the Ichabods with four at 59-55 with 47 seconds remaining. A Griffon turnover on an inbounds pass returned the ball to the Ichabods and after two missed shots and offensive boards by the Ichabods, William McNeill's stick-back with 20 seconds left cut the lead to two at 59-57. The Griffons' Martin Nolan hit the second of two free throws with 18 seconds remaining pushing the lead back to three points. After a missed 3-pointer by

Dezahn Otis picked up the offensive rebound and passed it to Washington who hit a fall away 3-pointer tying the score at 60 and the long-range shot by Missouri Western fell short sending the game into overtime.
In the extra frame, Washington hit a 3-pointer giving the Ichabods (7-4, 1-3 MIAA) a 63-60 lead, but the Griffons would score the next 12 points as the Ichabods would get no closer than four at 73-69 with nine seconds to play on a 3-pointer by Daniels.
Both teams struggled in the first half as the Ichabods recorded a season-low 20 points while shooting 30 percent from the field hitting 8 of 27 attempts. The Griffons (8-3, 3-1 MIAA) were 35 percent from the field hitting 9 of 26 from the field as the Griffons needed a 3-pointer at the halftime buzzer to take a 23-20 lead into halftime.
Washington finished with his third straight double double with career highs of 33 points and 14 rebounds with all of the boards coming on the defensive end. He finished 11 of 16 shots including 4 of 6 from 3-point range and a perfect 7 of 7 from the free throw line. McNeill was the only other Ichabod to reach double figure scoring with 15 points before missing the overtime period fouling out with 18 seconds left in regulation.
Marcus Rhodes led Missouri Western with 17 points.
Both teams heated up in the second half with Washburn hitting 12 of 25 shots for a 48 percent clip while Missouri Western was 12 of 24 for 50 percent. The Ichabods were 15 of 20 from the free throw line while the Griffons hit 17 of 33 attempts.

Washburn is 1,371-957 (.682 in 2,328 games) in its 104th season of intercollegiate action. The Ichabods are the ninth-winningest team in NCAA Division II history and the 26th winningest team this decade. The Ichabods are 429-186 since joining the NCAA Division II ranks, which is the most since the 1989-90 season in the MIAA.
Ichabods In Lee Arena . . .
The Ichabods are 339-61 (.848) all-time in Lee Arena - the 26th season of play. The Ichabods recorded a school-best 28-game winning streak from Nov. 19, 1993 to Feb. 8, 1995 in Lee Arena. Speaking of Lee Arena . . .
In the 26th season of play, the very first team to play in the arena, the 1984-85 squad has been invited back for a 25-year celebration on Feb. 6 when the Ichabods play host to Fort Hays State. The team led by Gary Carrier finished the season 26-9 and 10-4 in the CSIC placing second in the conference standings.
