Setting the scene . . .
The Washburn Ichabods (7-7, 1-6 MIAA) will return home for a Saturday night battle with Missouri Southern (8-5, 2-4 MIAA) in Lee Arena after a three-game road stint against nationally ranked teams. The Ichabods will travel to Pittsburg State next time out before returning to Topeka for a three-game homestand beginning with Emporia State on Jan. 16 wrapping up the first half of the MIAA schedule. The Ichabods will then play seven of their final 10 regular season games at home.

The Coaches. . .
Washburn Ichabod head basketball coach
Bob Chipman is in his 31st season at the helm of the Ichabod basketball program. For 24 years now Chipman has been the winningest coach in school history and in 2006-07 he became the second winningest coach as a member of the MIAA. Chipman is 669-271 (.716) overall and he has 421 wins since the Ichabods joined the MIAA - the most of any teams in the league since the 1991-92 season. Chipman is 37-17 against the Lions.
Missouri Southern head coach Robert Corn Robert Corn has guided the Lions to 16 MIAA Postseason Tournament berths (11 straight) and two trips to the NCAA Division II Tournament. The 1999-00 Division II Bulletin National Coach of the Year, he holds a career record of 318-263 (.547) at Southern, and is the winningest head coach in Lions basketball history. A 1978 graduate of Southern, he has led Southern to six 20-win seasons. His 1999-2000 team went 30-3 and advanced to the NCAA-II Elite Eight semifinals. Corn is sixth on the all-time MIAA wins list and fourth among active MIAA coaches. He is a two-time MIAA Coach of the Year winner.

(Jan. 6, 2010) BOLIVAR, Mo. -- The Washburn Ichabods again pushed a top 25-ranked team to the limit before falling late in a 73-62 loss at No. 11 Southwest Baptist at the Meyer Sports Center. The Ichabods will return home after wrapping up its three-game road trip against all nationally-ranked teams returning home to face Missouri Southern on Saturday in Lee Arena at 7:30 p.m.

Bobby Chipman's putback which pulled Washburn within three at 62-59, but SBU's Tristan Steele hit his second straight 3-pointer putting the Bearcats up 65-59 with 3:12 remaining.

Maurice Colter was called for an offensive foul with just over two minutes left still trailing by six. The Bearcats turned it over on their next possession and Washburn missed their field goal attempt with 1:20 remaining.
After a pair of free throws with 1:13 to go by Matt Rogers, SBU increased the lead to 67-59 and the Ichabods would get no closer the rest of the way as SBU would hit 2 of 2 of their free throws wrapping up the win.
The Bearcats took an eight-point lead into the halftime break leading 36-28. The Ichabods outshot Southwest Baptist 40 percent to 35 percent hitting 12 of 30 attempts while SBU was 8 of 23 from the field. However the Bearcats were 16 of 17 from the free throw line compared to 4 of 8 from the charity stripe for Washburn. Washburn was cold from behind the 3-point line missing all 10 attempts while SBU was 4 of 12. The Ichabods were whistled for 13 fouls compared to eight for SBU.
The Ichabods were led by Washington who scored a game-high 22 points while pulling down a team-high eight rebounds.
Virgil Philistin scored 13 off the bench hitting 3 of 5 3-point attempts in the game.
SBU's Stelle led the Bearcats with 21 points while hitting 5 of his team's 7 3-pointers. Rogers scored 18 points and Kurtis Koenig scored 14 with nine rebounds.
Washburn finished the game shooting 42 percent hitting 25 of 59 attempts while SBU was 21 of 48. SBU hit 7 of 23 3-point attempts while the Ichabods werew 2 of 20 from behind the arc. The Bearcats enjoyed a 24 of 25 performance from the free throw line while Washburn was 10 of 15. The win was the 38th in a row for SBU at home.
About Missouri Southern . . .
The Lions are 8-5 this season and 2-4 in the MIAA after blasting Emporia State last time out 82-64 on Wednesday night. The Lions won their first six games of the season including their conference opener over Truman. Jason Adams leads the team in scoring averaging 17.8 ppg with a team-best 6.6 rebounds per game. He is averaging 19.7 ppg and 7.7 rpg in MIAA play. Mariun Price is scoring 11.0 ppg along with Skyler Bowlin who is putting in 10.8 ppg and Keane Thomann is scoring 10.5 ppg. The Lions are averaging 82.8 ppg while allowing 70.5 ppg this season. Missouri Southern is shooting 46 percent from the field hitting 382 of 826 attempts while going 71 of 212 from 3-point range for a 34 percent mark. The Lions are 242 of 329 from the free throw line converting 74 percent of their attempts.

(Jan. 6, 2010) Joplin, Mo. - A 17-0 run midway through the second half, lifted Missouri Southern over Emporia State tonight, 82-64 as more than 700 fans braved the winter weather to cheer on the Lions in the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center.
Southern (8-5, 2-4 MIAA) breaks a four-game MIAA losing streak with the win. Jason Adams led the Lions with 15 points and 10 rebounds for his for his first career double-double. Keane Thomann scored 12 on 6-8 shooting from the field. DaRell Crittendon had seven points and eight rebounds off the bench, while Chris Scruggs scored 10.
ESU (6-8, 2-5 MIAA) had four score in double figures led by a game-high 18 points from Matt Boswell. Dustin Andrews scored 13, while Lamar Wilbern and Taylor Euler scored 12 and 10, respectively.
Southern trailed 9-7 five minutes into the game before a three from Adams with 13:09 left in the half gave the Lions a 12-11 lead. The Southern lead was 21-11 after a jumper from Chris Scruggs in the lane, making the Lions' run 14-4 with 11:41 left. A three point play from Bowlin pushed the Southern run to 26-10 and gave the Lions a 33-19 lead with 7:30 left in the half.
The Lions' lead reached 41-24 after a steal and a layup from Mariun Price with 4:15 left. A late push from Emporia made the halftime score 49-36, Lions.
Southern led 53-38 after a jumper from Thomann with 18:19, but the Horrnets fought back and cut the deficit to eight after a three pointer from Boswell. The Lions, however, responded and scored six-straight points after breakaway baskets from Adams and Landon Zerkel, and a pair of free throws from Zerkel. A pair of three's Travis Jones and Crittendon made the Lions' run 14-0 and the score 73-51 with six minutes left.
The run reached 17-0 before a three from Dustin Andrews made the score 76-54 with 4:18 to go in the game. Emporia went eight minutes without a point.
The Lions shot 51 percent from the field and 79 percent from the free throw line. They out rebounded the Hornets 39-31, while forcing 24 turnovers and scoring 33 points off of the ESU miscues. The Lions out scored Emporia 46-28 in the paint.
Series Notes with Missouri Southern . . .
Saturday's meeting will be the 66th meeting between these two schools in a series that dates back to 1968-69. Washburn leads the all-time series, 44-21. The Ichabods snapped a five-game Lion winning streak last season with a 93-86 win on Feb. 19 in Topeka. Washburn is 21-9 in MIAA games against the Lions and 9-8 on the road against MSSU since joining the league in 1989-90. The Ichabods have lost three in a row on the road to the Lions with their last win coming in Joplin on Jan. 21, 2006 in a double overtime 82-75 win. Last Meeting with Missouri Southern . . .
(Feb. 19, 2009) -- TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Ichabods trailed Missouri Southern 61-49 with 12:23 to play and used a 16-0 spurt over three-plus minutes to take a 65-61 lead and overcame a Lion comeback attempt taking a 93-86 win in Lee Arena.
During the run, Washburn's Paul Byers started the comeback with a 3-pointer and then converted a conventional 3-point play pulling Washburn within one at 61-60 with 9:42 to play. After Washburn pushed the lead to as many as six at 69-63, the Lions (17-10, 7-10 MIAA) scored seven unanswered points to take a 70-69 lead on a 3-pointer by Jason Adams. The Ichabods took the lead for good on a 3-pointer by James Williams and the Lions would get no closer than three points at 75-72 the rest of the way.
Washburn trailed at the break 43-33 behind the hot shooting of the Lions' Skyler Bowlin. In the opening half, he was 6 of 7 from the field including hitting all six 3-point attempts recording 18 points. The Lions were hit 50 percent of their shots going 15 of 30 from the field including 8 of 10 from 3-point range. Washburn was 12 of 27 from the field and 2 of 12 from downtown.
Lekheythan Malone scored 15 of his 18 points in the second half. He tied for team-high honors with
Nate Daniels who recorded a career-high for the second straight game following up his previous high of 15 he scored against Southwest Baptist with 18 against the Lions. Daniels scored 12 in the second half and Byers scored all 12 of his points in the second half.
Bowlin finished with 28 points on 10 of 14 shooting with an 8 of 11 performance from 3-point range. Mariun Price scored 18 points, Adams finished with 14 and DaRell Crittendown had a double double with 13 points and 10 rebounds.
Washburn held a 34 to 28 advantage on the glass and the Ichabods bench outscored the Lions' reserves 36 to 19.
