Washburn soccer hosting Griffons and Bearcats in MIAA weekend action

Setting the Scene:
The Washburn Lady Blues will return to action in Yager Stadium with a pair of MIAA games when they will play host to Missouri Western on Thursday and Northwest Missouri after the Ichabods football homecoming game on Saturday.

About Missouri Western
Missouri Western notes:
The Griffons are 1-7-5 (1-5-5 MIAA) and have lost two straight games. The last win for the Griffons came on Oct. 9 in a 2-1 double overtime win over Nebraska-Omaha. Six of the Griffons' 13 matches have gone into double overtime this season.

About the coach:
Jeff Hansen is 16-62-13 in his fifth year at MWSU. He came to Western after assisting at Central Missouri for two years. He played soccer at Missouri Southern.

About the Griffons:
The Griffons have been outscored 18 to 7 this season. Audrey Henderson  and Heather Schmiemeier each have two goals to lead the Missouri Western attack. In goal, Jenna Weis has a 1.26 goal against average with three shutouts.

Series history with the Griffons:
The Lady Blues lead the all-time series 9-2-0 and have outscored the Griffons 31-4 in the nine wins. Missouri Western's snapped a seven-match Lady Blues' winning streak in the first meeting of 2009 in a 3-0 win. Washburn is 4-2-0 in St. Joseph and the Lady Blues are 6-0 in matches played in Topeka outscoring the Griffons 17 to 1 in Yager Stadium.

Last meeting with Missouri Western:
Sept. 18, 2010 - ST. JOSEPH, Mo. -- The Washburn Lady Blues soccer team picked up their first win of the season with a 1-0 decision over Missouri Western. Washburn will be back in action on Thursday at Northwest Missouri.
Freshman Rachel Hansen scored off an assist from Lindsey Lambert in the 66th minute giving the Lady Blues the win. Ashley Klone picked up the shutout win in goal with six saves.
WU was outshot 6-0 in the first 45 minutes, but responded with 11 shots in the second half.  

Last time out for Missouri Western:
Oct.16, 2010 - BOLIVAR, Mo. -- The Missouri Western Griffons struggled on the road against the Southwest Baptist Bearcats only managing just two shots on goal throughout the match. Goal keeper Jenna Weis had 9 saves in the contest as the Griffons fall to 1-7-5 overall and 1-5-5 in MIAA action.
Western got down early as Bearcat midfielder Kelly Isaac scored twice in the opening minutes to give the 'Cats a 2-0 lead. The Bearcats held a 21-7 advantage in shots taken.
In the fourth minute, Isaac put away her first score on a free kick, giving SBU the early 1-0 lead. Just four minutes later, after the Bearcats earned a corner kick, Isaac scored on a header from Brittani Ready to put the 'Cats up by a pair of goals. Ready recorded her ninth assist of the year.
About Northwest Missouri
Northwest Missouri notes: The Bearcats are 2-8-3 (2-7-2 MIAA) after falling to No. 2-ranked Central Missouri 4-0 last time out on Oct. 16.

About the coach:
Head coach Tracy Hoza is 40-73-15 in her eighth season as the Bearcats' head coach.

About the Bearcats:
The Bearcats have been outshot 204 to 138 this season and outscored 23 to 10 this year. Emilee Davison leadsNorthwest in scoring with three goals for six points. In goal, Kelsey Adams has a 1.57 goal against average garnering 57 saves in nearly 900 minutes of play.

Series history with the Bearcats:
The Lady Blues lead the all-time series 10-2-3. Five of the last eight matches have been shutout wins for the Lady Blues with the lone goal for the Bearcats was in a 1-1 double overtime tie on Oct. 12, 2007 in Topeka. The Lady Blues are 5-2-1 all-time in matches in Maryville. Washburn is 5-0-2 in matches played in Topeka. Six of the 14 matches have gone into overtime.

Last meeting with Northwest Missouri:
Oct. 23, 2010 - MARYVILLE, Mo. -- The  Washburn Lady Blues won their second straight match as they picked up a 2-1  double overtime win over  Northwest Missouri Thursday  afternoon against the  Bearcats.
After a scoreless first  half in which the Lady Blues (2-3-1, 2-2-0 MIAA) outshot the Bearcats  11 to 3, Washburn opened  the scoring in the 58th  minute as Leah Talley  scored her first goal of  the season on an assist  from Tia Stovall from the  right side of the box.  However the Bearcats would  tie the score in the 75th  minute when Jordan Albright  knotted the score on with  the help of an assist from  Kelsey Sanders.
Neither team would score  the rest of the way sending  the match into overtime.  Washburn was the aggressors  in the first overtime  outshooting the Bearcats 4  to 1 in the first overtime  stanza. After a scoreless  first ten minutes, Stovall  would connect on the golden  goal of an assist from  Taylor Mayhew from the left  side of the box into the  right side of the net for  the clincher 4:34 seconds  into the second overtime.
Ashley Klone picked up the  win in goal for the Lady  Blues recording six saves.
Washburn outshot the  Bearcats 21 to 12 in the  match with Lauren Henry  leading the charge with six  shots. Stovall finished  with five. Ten of the 21  shots were on goal for the  Lady Blues.
The match improved the Lady Blues to 8-6-23 all-time in overtime matches and it was the sixth time Washburn and Northwest Missouri had gone into extra minutes in the 15 matches played between the two teams. Washburn is now 3-0-3 against the Bearcats in overtime matches.

Last time out for the Lady Blues:
Oct. 16, 2010 - TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Lady Blues were shutout by Nebraska-Omaha 3-0 on Saturday night in Yager Stadium. Washburn trailed at the half 1-0 after UNO's Hilary Horvatic scored unassisted from 21 yards out on a shot from the right side into the far left corner of the goal in the 19th minute staking the Mavericks to an early lead.
Neither team was able to score in the first 35 minutes of the second half until UNO's Danielle Archuleta scored the first of her two second half goals in the 80th minute on an assist from Maggie Olson. Olson had a point-blank shot which was stopped by Washburn's Ashley Klone, but the rebound was put into the far coner of the back of the net for the 2-0 lead. Archuleta added her second goal a little over eight minutes later unassisted from 10 yards out.
Lauren Fox picked up the shutout win for the Mavericks, her fourth of the season.
Washburn was outshot 11 to 9 and 7 to 5 in the second half.
Klone finished with seven saves and Stefanie Stuever, Lauren Henry and Caysie Beetley each had two shots. Tia Stoval and Stuever had shots on goal for the Lady Blues.

Lady Blues Soccer History:
Washburn is 74-57-25 (.560) all-time in its eighth season of competing. In MIAA play, the Lady Blues are 51-43-18 (.537). In home matches, the Lady Blues are 35-21-11 and they are 32-31-11 on the road. In matches on neutral sites, the Lady Blues are 7-5-3.

Up Next:
Washburn will travel to Emporia State on Oct. 28 and Truman on Oct. 30 before coming back to Yager Stadium for Southwest Baptist and senior night before wrapping up the regular season at Central Missouri on Nov. 6.
