TOPEKA, Kan. -- The second-ranked Lady Blues avenged their first loss of the season with a 3-1 (25-17, 25-19, 21-25, 25-20) triumph over No. 11 Truman State on Friday night at Lee Arena. Washburn will be back in action on Saturday night at home against Missouri Western at 6 p.m.
The Lady Blues (22-2, 10-2 MIAA) battled out of an early hole to tie the first set at 5-5 and then took control with a 5-0 run to go ahead 13-9. Washburn pushed the opening set lead to as many as eight before closing out the set at 25-17.
The second set saw eight ties and four lead changes. The frame was tied 15-all when WU seized control winning four of the next five points to go up 19-16. The lead never was smaller than two the rest of the way and Washburn went up two sets to none with the 25-19 win.
The Bulldogs (20-4, 9-3 MIAA) battled back to take the third set 25-21. Washburn led early on 5-0, but a 9-3 run by Truman gave the Bulldogs a lead they would never relinquish. The lead grew to as many as six before a short rally drew the Lady Blues to within one. TSU closed out the set with a 9-5 run to force a fourth set.
The Lady Blues jumped out to big lead early in set four going up 10-2 early on and looked as thought they'd run away. The Bulldogs, however, clawed their way back and got to within four late, but Washburn slammed the door on emphatic kills from
Jessica Fey and
Breanna Lewis.
Aubri Renshaw led Washburn with 14 kills and 12 digs for her fifth double-double of the season.
Molly Smith registered a game-high 32 digs, leaving her one shy of second place on Washburn's career digs list.
Amanda Guess and
Abby Wittman combined for 41 assists, while Guess added 12 digs for her ninth double-double of the season.
Molly Sinclair led Truman with 10 kills, while Ashley Petak had 19 assists and 15 digs. Kylie Easlon also had 19 assists for the Bulldogs, while Casey Bruno had 30 digs and Allison Barker had 24.
