The Washburn Ichabods will tip off the 105th season of basketball when they will play host to Peru State on Tuesday in Lee Arena. The Ichabods fell in three exhibition games to Kansas, Kansas State and Nevada-Las Vegas. Peru State is coming off a 64-53 loss to St. Mary on Nov. 13 and enter Tuesday's game with a 1-3 record with the lone win coming over Midland 86-79.

Washburn Ichabod head basketball coach
Bob Chipman begins his 32nd season at the helm of the Ichabod basketball program. For 25 years now Chipman has been the winningest coach in school history and in 2006-07 he became the second winningest coach as a member of the MIAA. Chipman is 678-278 (.709) overall and he has 437 wins since the Ichabods joined the MIAA - the most of any teams in the league since the 1991-92 season. Chipman is 12th amongst all NCAA II coaches in winning percentage who have coached at least 10 seasons. Among that group, he is second in all-time coaching victories in active coaches in career victories. Among all coaches who have at least 10 years experience in DII, he is 24th in winning percentage and seventh in victories. He is the third active winningest coach in NCAA Division II and 10th in winning percentage and his 678 coaching wins is 28th all-time among all NCAA coaches at all levels. At Washburn he has led the Ichabods to 11 conference regular season titles (9 MIAA), 10 NCAA Tournament appearances and the 1987 NAIA National Championship.
Peru State head coach Troy Katen enters his third season as the head coach of the Bobcats. He is 7-59. He is looking to make great strides in this year's team with his second full recruiting class. Prior to his stint at CMU, Katen spent five years at Hastings College. As the top assistant coach for the Men's Basketball team in 2001 to 2005, Katen aided the Broncos' in the recruiting of student-athletes from across the country, as well as Nebraska. During his time with the Broncos, Katen coached thirteen All-Conference players, two NAIA Academic Scholar-Athletes and three 1,000 points scorers.
2010-11 Washburn Ichabod Season Preview. . .
The Washburn Ichabods return eight players off of last season's squad which entered the MIAA Championship Tournament as the No. 8 seed and reached the title game coming up just short in a two-point loss to Nebraska-Omaha. En route to the title game the Ichabods knocked off the top seeded Central Missouri, who were ranked No. 2 in the nation at the time in the opening game and then topped Missouri Western in the semifinals. Of the eight returning players, the Ichabods are returning 83 percent of their scoring and 85 percent of their rebounding. With the addition of six talented newcomers, the Ichabods are eyeing a return trip deep into the MIAA Tournament to set up a run into the NCAA national tournament.
“Our players from last year got a taste of how good they can play together and with our new additions we will have a group of guys who can be successful this season and collectively are capable of winning a conference championship,” 32nd-year head coach

Guards - Group in the backcourt will have depth and competition for minutes
The Ichabod backcourt will have five returners from last season and be even deeper with three additions, including a pair of Division I transfers.
Nate Daniels is the lone four-year returning player in the group while averaging 5.0 points and 2.6 rebounds per game thus far in 67 games at Washburn. Junior William McNeill was a member of the all-MIAA's Defensive team last season after leading the league with 63 steals (2.1 spg) while finishing 18th in the league in scoring with a 12.7 ppg average. Virgil Philistin averaged 5.4 ppg after his first season at Washburn including a 22-point effort against Emporia State in the regular season finale. Sophomores
Bryce Simons and
Mitch Allen all saw action the entire season with Simons making 24 starts averaging 3.4 ppg during the season and Allen appearing in 29 games scoring 1.3 ppg. Washburn will add three new guards including senior
Jadarren Mumpfield, a transfer from Alabama State and junior college teammate of Philistin and
De'Andre Washington and
Jeff Reid from Topeka. Reid returns home after missing the majority of his freshman season at St. Louis after suffering a concussion receiving a medical redshirt. The 2009-10 Mr. Basketball in the state of Kansas averaged 19.9 points, 4.1 rebounds as a senior at Hayden. Junior
Robert Sigala had 6.7 ppg and 3.6 rpg at Seward County.
Forwards - Will have depth in the frontcourt with three returners and three talented newcomers
This season the Washburn Ichabod front court will have a returning honorable mention all-MIAA pick in
De'Andre Washington who was fifth in the MIAA in scoring at 16.7 ppg and second in rebounding with 8.5 rpg leading a group of six ready to battle this season. Washington also led the Ichabods in assists from his forward position where he started all 30 games. Joining Washington is senior
Logan Stutz. Stutz, who is in his third season at Washburn averaged 11.3 ppg with 5.0 rpg. Sophomore
Bobby Chipman led the team in blocks with 21 after making 16 starts playing in all 30 games while scoring 3.6 ppg with 3.0 rpg. Joining the action this year will be junior
Zack Riggins who started practice with the Ichabods in the spring after transferring from Division I North Florida, where he started 10 games as a freshman. Fellow junior
Brandon Scaife, a 6-8, 270 pound forward from State Fair Community College averaged six points and three boards a game. The lone freshman newcomer is
Alex North who was named the Topeka city player of the year after leading Topeka West to the state championship game after averaging 17.5 ppg and 9.8 rpg earning all-state honors.
About Peru state . . .
The Bobcats are 1-3 this season falling last time out to St. Mary 64-53 at the Peru State Classic on Saturday. The lone win for the Bobcats is a 86-79 win over Mindland University on Nov. 4. Peru State also played a NCAA Division I school during exhibition play falling at Nebraska as the Cornhuskers won 75-43. Derrick Williams leads the team averaging 20.3 points per game. The 6-3 sophomore guard is a transfer from College of the Ozarks.

Peru State Sports Information -- Nov. 13, 2010 - (Peru, Neb.) – After leading at halftime, the Peru State College (PSC) men's basketball team fell to the University of St. Mary (USM) Spires by a final score of 64-53. With the win, the Spires improve to 3-1 on the season while the Bobcats fall to 1-3.
Peru State led at halftime 29-25. In the first half of the game, the Bobcats outshot the Spires as PSC connected on 12 of 30 shots for 40%. The 'Cats hit three of seven three-point goals for 42.9%. USM was cold in the first 20 minutes making only nine of 34 attempts for 26.5%. The Spires were even cooler from behind the three-point line as they only converted two of 14 attempts for 14.3%. USM did outshoot the 'Cats at the free throw line as they made five of six for 83.3% while PSC only made two of seven for 28.6%. The Bobcats outrebounded the Spires by one, 12 to 11.
USM outscored the Bobcats 40-24 in the second half while shooting much better than the 'Cats. The Spires were ten of 22 for 45.5% and connected on three of seven three-point attempts for 42.9%. For Peru State, it was a totally different story shooting wise compared to the first half as they struggled while finishing with eight of 29 attempts for 27.6%. The Bobcats missed all nine of their three-point tries in the final 20 minutes. PSC did improve from the free throw lane canning eight of 11 attempts for 72.7 percent.
Andre Wells (Colorado Springs) was the only Bobcat to finish in double figures as he scored 12 points on five of ten shooting and hitting two of four free throw attempts. Wells was also the leading rebounder with six and also blocked two shots.
The University of St. Mary was led by Chris Combs with 14 points. Also finishing in double figures were Jeb Greenberg with 11 and Devon Dougherty with 10.

Nov. 16, 2010 -- TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Ichabods opened their 104th season of collegiate basketball with a 71-41 win over Peru State.
The Ichabods trailed only once at 7-6 as the Bobcat lead lasted 20 seconds before the Ichabods took the lead for good on a
Nate Daniels jumper and they never looked back building a lead as many as 15 in the opening stanza right before the halftime break. Washburn shot 43 percent in the first half hitting 15 of 35 shots from the field as 11 different Ichabods scored.
In the second half, Washburn came out of the locker room on a 27-4 run over the first 13 minutes of the half pushing the lead to 37 on two different occasions before wrapping up the 30-point win. Washburn held the Bobcats to 30 percent shooting in the second half as they hit 6 of 20 attempts from the field.
De'Andre Washington led the Ichabods with 17 points and eight rebounds. He was 8 of 13 from the field and also had four assists. He was the only Ichabod to reach double figure scoring, but five other Ichabods had at least six points in the game.
Steven Burks led the Bobcats with 10 points.
The Ichabods finished the game shooting 38 percent from the field connecting on 27 of 71 attempts while Peru State was limited to 16 of 51 shooting for a 31 percent clip. The Bobcats were 2 of 18 from 3-point range.
Washburn forced 30 Bobcat turnovers turning them into 27 points. Washburn also recorded 27 second chance points.

Washburn leads the all-time series 8-1. The lone win for the Bobcats in the series came on Dec. 20, 1962 in a 60-54 win on the road. Overall the Ichabods have won the last five meetings.

The Ichabods are the ninth-winningest team in NCAA Division II history and the 26th winningest team this decade. The Ichabods are 437-198 since joining the NCAA Division II ranks, which is the most since the 1989-90 season in the MIAA.
