Lady Blues wrap up home slate with SBU on Thursday

Setting the Scene:
The Washburn Lady Blues will wrap up the regular season this week when they will take on Southwest Baptist on Thursday night in Yager Stadium and No. 2-ranked Central Missouri on Saturday on the road in Warrensburg. Thursday's game will be the final home game for six Lady Blues seniors: Brittany Tracz, Jordan Shefte, Ashley Hynek, Markie Gallagher, Danielle Sicard and Ashley Klone.

About Southwest Baptist
Southwest Baptist notes: The Bearcats are 6-8-2 and 5-7-2 in the MIAA sitting in a fourth-place tie with the Lady Blues in the conference standings.

About the coach: Bearcat head coach Rob Podeyn is in his second season along the SBU sideline where he has coached the Bearcats to a 13-17-5 record. Podeyn led the Bearcats to a 7-9-3 record last year after coming to SBU from Northwood University (Texas), where he captured two conference titles over three years. After earning his 60th career win earlier this season, Podeyn has a career mark of 65-67-12.

About the Bearcats: The Bearcats are 6-8-2 overall and 5-7-2 in the conference and have been outscored by their opponents 32 to 25 this season while being outshot 265 to 224. Ashley Creason has eight goals to lead the Bearcats and Shonee Samia hs six goals. Innet Megan Link has a 1.92 goal against average.

Series history with the Bearcats: SBU leads the all-time series 6-4-5. After dropping the first four games in the series between the schools, the Lady Blues have gone 4-2-5 in the last 11 meetings against SBU. Four of the last nine matches have gone into double overtime all ending in ties.

Last meeting with Southwest Baptist: Oct. 2, 2010 - BOLIVAR, Mo. -- The Washburn Lady Blues fell 2-1 at Southwest Baptist in soccer action on Saturday afternoon in Bolivar. The Bearcats scored two goals in the first half as SBU outshot the Lady Blues as they scored both goals within 4:19 as Shonee Samia scored both goals.
The Lady Blues' Rachel Hansen scored her second goal of the season unassisted in the 55th minute hooking the ball into the lower right hand corner of the net.
Washburn outshot the Bearcats 9 to 3 in the second half and 14 to 12 in the match.
 
Last time out for Southwest Baptist: October 28, 2010 -- BOLIVAR, Mo. -- In the first cold-weather game of the year, freshman forward Ashley Creason scored her eighth goal of the season, but SBU lost the battle of the Bearcats to Northwest Missouri, 2-1. SBU had a number of chances in the first half, but it was Creason getting behind the central defenders of Northwest, and taking Kelly Isaac's pass on a breakaway that led to a 1-0 lead early for the purple Bearcats. Northwest was able to make some deep runs, but was usually turned away by the SBU defense. They broke though in the 29th minute, when a header from Amanda Bundrant got past the keeper for the score.
Northwest Missouri seemed to control the tempo more in the second half, outshooting SBU 7-3. Northwest scored what would end up being the game-winning goal when a pass from near midfield that was out of reach of the Northwest attackers, got away from keeper Megan Link.
About Central Missouri
Central Missouri notes: The Jennies have already wrapped up the MIAA Championship entering a Nov. 4 match against Truman with  16-0-0, 14-0-0 record. Despite being No. 2 in the country, the Jennies are No. 3 in the latest NCAA South Central Regional Poll.

About the coach: Lewis Theobald enters his fourth season as the head coach at UCM. He has compiled a 57-13-8 record at the helm of the Jennies. He was the first assistant at Division I Indiana State, where he was the lead recruiter before coming to UCM. He is a 1999 graduate of the University of Kansas.

About the Jennies: The Jennies have won their last 23 matches dating back to last season. This season the Jennies have outscored their opponents 47 to 8 and outshot their foes 319 to 59 adding 133 corner kicks to their opponents' 20. Alyssa Rhodes leads the Jennies with five goals this season for 11 points. Carly Stanley leads the team with seven goals and three assists. Kayla Shain has six goals and five assists while Kristin Bright leads the team with six assistts. In net, Brooke Cooley has a 0.40 goal against average and a 14-0-0 record with three six with 23 saves.

Series history with the Jennies: The Jennies lead the all-time series 9-5-1 and have won the last four in a row. They have outscored the Lady Blues 19 to 12 in the 15 meetings. Five of the last seven matches have been decided by 1-0 scores and seven of the last nine matches have been decided by one goal. Three of the matches have gone into overtime and one has gone into double overtime.

Last meeting with Central Missouri: Oct. 7, 2010 - TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Lady Blues soccer team was shutout by the No. 2-ranked Central Missouri Jennies on Thursday night in Yager Stadium. The Jennies (10-0-0, 8-0-0 MIAA) jumped on the board with two goals in the opening half as Carly Stanley scored from inside the box from about 10 yards out on an assist from Sharaya Sidebottom in the 29th minute of the match and Central Missouri added another in the 34th minute when Kristen Bright scored into the right side of the net on an assist from Aaryn Burke. In the second half, the Jennies added another goal on Stanley's second goal of the match from 18 yards out from the middle of the goal box unassisted. The Lady Blues were outshot 9 to 0 in the first half and 19 to 1 in the match overall. Washburn did not attempt its first shot attempt until there were 18:38 left in the match as a free kick by Megan Buckley from 25 yards out sailed high. Ashley Klone had nine saves in net for the Lady Blues.

Last time out for Central Missouri:  Central Missouri (16-0, 14-0 MIAA) broke multiple team records in this game, including most wins in a season with 16. The Jennies have also broke the season records for the most goals scored (47) the most assists (35), and the most points (129). The Jennies controlled the ball all of the first half, not allowing Emporia State (1-10-5, 1-9-4 MIAA)  to take any shots. Junior Sharaya Sidebottom took a shot in the 27th minute only to have a Hornet defender block it into Bristow who kicked the ball into the net. Sidebottom collected her third assist of the season on the play. Nine minutes into the second half Bristow scored her second goal of the game. She got a pass from freshman Brooke Lickteig and took a shot that hit the post and ricocheted into the left side of the net. It is Bristow's third goal of the season and her first time scoring two goals in a game in her career. Lickteig recorded her first collegiate assist on the play. Sophomore Alex Hess took a team-high four shots in the game, two on target. It is also a personal game-high for Hess. Freshman Brooke Cooley collected her sixth shutout of the season, saving both shots the Hornets took. 
Last time out for the Lady Blues:
Oct. 30, 2010 - KIRKSVILLE, Mo. -- The Washburn Lady Blues soccer team had their two match winning streak snapped in a 2-0 loss to Truman on Saturday.
The Bulldogs opened the scoring in the 32nd minute on an unassisted goal by Megan Buri on her fifth goal of the season. In the second half Truman added another goal on Suzanne Pelley score in the 75th minute on her second goal of the year.
Truman outshot the Lady Blues 15 to 8 in the match and 6 to 1 in the second half when the Lady Blues were going into a strong wind. Tia Stovall had two shots on goal and Markie Gallagher had one. Overall Stovall had three shots. Ashley Klone had five saves in the match.

Lady Blues Soccer History:
Washburn is 76-59-25 (.560) all-time in its eighth season of competing. In MIAA play, the Lady Blues are 53-45-18 (.537). In home matches, the Lady Blues are 36-22-11 and they are 33-32-11 on the road. In matches on neutral sites, the Lady Blues are 7-5-3.

Following Saturday's match at Central Missouri, the Lady Blues will return to the pitch for the start of the 2011 season.
