Ichabods look to snap skid at Missouri Western

Countdown to tip . . .
The Washburn Ichabods travel to St. Joseph, Mo., for their second trip into the “Show Me State” for the second time in as many games as they will face Missouri Western in their final game before Christmas break on Dec. 19. Washburn (5-3, 2-2 MIAA) has lost its last two games coming off an 83-78 loss at Truman on Dec. 11. Missouri Western (4-5, 2-2 MIAA) snapped a two-game slide with a 78-77 win over No. 6-ranked Fort Hays State at home.

The Coaches . . .
Washburn Ichabod head basketball coach Bob Chipman is in his 32nd season at the helm of the Ichabod basketball program. For 25 years now Chipman has been the winningest coach in school history and in 2006-07 he became the second winningest coach as a member of the MIAA. Chipman is 683-281 (.710) overall and he has 441 wins since the Ichabods joined the MIAA - the most of any teams in the league since the 1991-92 season. Chipman is 11th amongst all NCAA II coaches in winning percentage who have coached at least 10 seasons. Among that group, he is second in all-time coaching victories in active coaches in career victories. Among all coaches who have at least 10 years experience in DII, he is 25th in winning percentage and seventh in victories. He is the third active winningest coach in NCAA Division II and 10th in winning percentage and his 683 coaching wins is 28th all-time among all NCAA coaches at all levels. At Washburn he has led the Ichabods to 11 conference regular season titles (9 MIAA), 10 NCAA Tournament appearances and the 1987 NAIA National Championship. Chipman is 37-28 against Missouri Western.
Missouri Western head coach Tom Smith is in his 23rd season at Missouri Western and his 36th season overall as a collegiate head coach in this season. He is 421-234 overall on the Griffon bench and 591-418 overall.
 
Last time out for the Ichabods . . .
(Dec. 11, 2010) KIRKSVILLE, Mo. -- The Washburn Ichabods were able to cut a 13-point Truman lead to four late in the second half but could not get any closer in a 83-78  loss to the Bulldogs.
The Ichabods, who had their seven-game winning streak over Truman (3-5, 1-3 MIAA) snapped in the loss, led at the half by two at 36-34, fell behind 55-49 with 11:36 to go in the game before trimming the Bulldog lead back to four at 82-78 with 11 seconds to go on a 3-pointer by De'Andre Washington. Following an Ichabod timeout, Truman hit 1 of 2 free throws and the Ichabods missed their final three-point attempt as time expired on the Ichabods.
Washington led the Ichabods with a season-high 29 points on 11 of 19 shooting including 5 of 11 from 3-point range. He also added nine rebounds and six assists for the Ichabods in 38 minutes of play. Lgoan Stutz scored 12 points on 6 of 10 shooting and Jeff Reid also had 12 on 5 of 11 shooting with 2 of 5 from 3-point range.
Alex Henderon led four Bulldogs in double figures with 23 points. He finished 10 of 11 from the free throw line while adding eight rebounds. Tom Norton scored 19. Vesko Filchev had 13 and Ethan Freeman scored 10.
Truman outshot the Ichabods from the field connecting on 27 of 53 field goal attempts, including a 12 of 25 performance from behind the 3-point arc. The Ichabods were 33 of 72 from the field for a 46 percent average hitting 9 of 29 from 3-point range. However Truman was 17 of 25 from the free throw line while the Ichabods were an anemic 3 of 11 from the free throw line for a 27 percent average. The Ichabods were outrebounded by the Bulldogs 40 to 34. Washburn did only committ only five turnovers compared to 11 by Truman.

Last meeting with Missouri Western . . .
(March 6, 2010) KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The Washburn Ichabods reached their first MIAA Tournament Championship game since the 2004 season with a 56-43 win over Missouri Western in Municipal Auditorium.
The Ichabods fell behind by six after the Griffons opened a 9-3 lead 2:54 into the game as the teams would trade leads three times in the opening 20 minutes. The Ichabods took the lead for good in the half on a 3-pointer by De'Andre Washington at 25-24 at with 3:54 remaining in the half. Neither team would score the remainder of the frame as the Ichabods took the one-point advantage into the halftime locker room.
Each team was 9 of 25 in the first half from the field as the Ichabods hit four 3-pointers compared to two for the Griffons.
In the second half, the Griffons took a quick lead at 27-25 on a 3-pointer by Quentin Noblin but a lay up by Logan Stutz knotted the score at 27. After a 3-point play by Stutz put the Ichabods up 30-27 with 18:19 to play in the game, the Griffons hit a 3-pointer to tie the score at 30.
A jumper in the paint by Washington put the Ichabods up for good at 32-30 with 14:06 to play and they would not look back as they built a lead as many as the final margin of 13 with 48 seconds to play in the game.
Stutz finished with a game-high 19 points on 7 of 9 shooting from the field and Washington recorded his 11th double double of the season with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Marcus Rhodes led the Griffons with 17 points.
Washburn held the Griffons to 19 points in the second half limiting Missouri Western to 5 of 20 from the field and a combined 14 of 45 for the game for a 31 percent average. On the other hand the Ichabods were 10 of 16 in the half for a 63 percent average while shooting 19 of 41 for the game for a 46 percent average. The Ichabods outscored the Griffons 28 to 16 in the paint.  

About Missouri Western . . .

The Griffons are 4-5 this season and snapped a two-game losing streak with a 78-77 over then-ranked No. 6 Fort Hays State at home. The two MIAA losses were on the road at Emporia State and at Missouri Southern. Jonathan Phelps leads the team in scoring at 20.9 ppg without starting a single game this season. P'Allen Stinnett has scored 18.5 ppg. T.J. Johnson is scoring 12.7 ppg while leading the team with 7.4 rpg. The Griffons have hit 96 of 255 3-point attempts on the season. Nearly half of the team's field goal attempts have been from 3-point range (255 of 527 total). The Griffons have been outrebounded by an average of 39.7 to 34.8 per game this season. Overall the team is averaging 79.6 ppg while allowing 82.7 ppg. 

Last time out for Missouri Western . . .
MWSU Sports Information -- Dec. 11, 2010 - ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – James Harvey scored one point in the contest but it was the biggest, as his free throw with under a second to play sealed the upset against 6th-ranked Fort Hays State 78-77 on Saturday afternoon in the fieldhouse. P'Allen Stinnett led the Griffons with 26 points as Western improves to 4-5 overall and 2-2 in MIAA action.
The first half was a back and forth battle with 13 lead changes and six ties. The two teams played the first 5:37 of the first half to a 12 all tie. P'Allen Stinnett scored the Griffons first seven points of the contest. The Tigers built its biggest lead of the game at 21-16 after a Moses Dayee long range shot with 11:27 to play in the frame.
Western battled back to tie the score at 25 after a three point shot from Deionta Mitchell long range bucket with 7:09 to play in the frame. Mitchell gave the Griffons a 30-28 leads with another three with 6:17 to play. Western outscored the Tigers 14-13 claiming a three point lead at 44-41 at the half.
Western forced nine Fort Hays State turnovers and collected 12 points off those turnovers. Western had 18 bench points and 12 points in the paint. The Griffons shot 46.7-percent (14-30) in the half and connected on all 11 of its free throw attempts. Stinnett led all scorers with 19 points on 6-of-9 shooting.
The Tigers had 12 assists on its 15 field goals as they shot 51.7-percent in the half making 15-of-29 shots. The Tigers made 6-of-12 long range shots and went 5-of-7 from the line. Dijon Smith had 12 points connecting on all six of his field goal attempts. Smith also had six rebounds in the frame.
Western opened the second half on fire opening a 21 point advantage after a Dernodo Eiland three pointer with 10:06 to play in the game. From there the Tigers began to chip away hitting jumpers from short and deep. The Tigers tied the score at 77 with 21 seconds remaining after a Matt Simmons layup. Harvey would get fouled and hit the first free throw to seal the victory.
The Griffons shot 45.8-percent (27-59) from the field and made 11-of-30 long range shots. Jeffery West hit two big three's to open up the second half finishing with 13 points for the Griffons. Phelps and Mitchell finished the game with 11 points respectively. The Griffons got outrebounded 33 to 40 but had 18 assists on 27 field goals. Western had 10 steals forcing 15 Hays turnovers.
The Tigers lost its first game of the season as they fall to 9-1 overall and 3-1 in MIAA play. Fort Hays State shot a season low 43.5-percent (27-62) from the field as Smith led the way with 18 points on 8-of-9 shooting. FHSU had four other players in double figures with Ken Bowman scoring 14 points while Dominique Jones and Corbin Kuntzsch dumped in 13 and Dayee chipped in 12. The Tigers finished with 19 assists in the contest.

Series notes . . .
Sunday's meeting will be the 78th meeting between the two schools with Washburn leading the series 44-33. The Ichabods are 20-18 against MWSU in MIAA games and 18-9 in Lee Arena. The Ichabods have dropped the last three games played in St. Joseph, not winning since a 77-62 victory on Jan. 27, 2007. In the MIAA Tournament the Ichabods are 3-4 against the Griffons. Since joining the MIAA, the Ichabods are 7-16 in MIAA games played in St. Joseph. Missouri Western tied the series lead WU 4-4 in overtime games with the win in Topeka last season. The Griffons have won the two regular season meetings last season and the Ichabods won the MIAA tournament match up last season in the conference semifinals.

Ichabod Basketball History . . .
Washburn is 1,391-966 (.590 in 2357 games) in its 105th season of intercollegiate action. The Ichabods are the ninth-winningest team in NCAA Division II history and the 26th winningest team this decade. The Ichabods are 440-200 since joining the NCAA Division II ranks, which is the most since the 1989-90 season in the MIAA.

Home sweet home - the Ichabods In Lee Arena . . .
The Ichabods are 345-64 (.848) all-time in Lee Arena - the 27th season of play. The Ichabods recorded a school-best 28-game winning streak from Nov. 19, 1993 to Feb. 8, 1995 in Lee Arena.
