Last time out for the Ichabods. . .
Dec, 1, 2010 - TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Ichabods jumped out to a 11-2 lead to start the game and rallied to regain the lead from a Nebraska-Omaha comeback taking a 79-73 win over the Mavericks in their MIAA opener in Lee Arena.
The Ichabods (4-1, 1-0 MIAA) jumped out to the early lead behind seven straight points from Jeff Reid. Reid also had two assists on Washburn's next two baskets by Logan Stutz as Washburn pushed the lead to 13-4 on a jumper by Bryce Simons with 14:40 to play in the first half. The Ichabods stretched the lead to as many as 13 in the half at 24-21 on a 3-pointer by De'Andre Washington with 9:22 to go in the half. However the Mavericks (3-2, 0-1 MIAA) rallied and cut the lead to four with 1:26 to go on a Tyler Bullock jumper pulling UNO to a 30-26 deficit. But back-to-back 3-pointers by Bobby Chipman and De'Andre Washington pushed the lead back to 15 and the Bearcats would not get within 12 points the rest of the game.
William McNeill scored 10 points in each half finishing with a team-high 20 points while hitting 8 of 10 free throw attempts. Last time out for Northwest MIssouri . . .
NWMSU Sports Information -- Dec. 1, 2010 - EMPORIA, Kan.-A seven-point, halftime deficit was too much for Northwest Missouri State men's basketball team to overcome.
The Bearcats never led in the second half and fell 70-65 to Emporia State Wednesday evening at White Auditorium.
The biggest nemesis for Northwest was Emporia senior Adam Holthaus. Holthaus sent the Hornets into halftime with all the momentum when he nailed a three-pointer at the buzzer to put Emporia up 30-23.
Holthaus, a burly, 6-foot-7 forward, really showed his inside strength late in the second half. Northwest trailed 51-45 when Holthaus bulldozed his way for an offensive rebound and then got the put-back bucket.
Emporia extended its lead to 57-48 with less than 5 minutes to play.
The Bearcats fought back and closed to 60-56 with 2:13 left. But like the women's team before them, the Bearcats couldn't get a key stop followed by a basket to draw closer.
The loss dropped Northwest to 2-3 overall and 0-1 in the MIAA. Emporia improved to 4-3 and 1-0.
On the bright side, freshman Dillon Starzl turned in his best game so far in his young, collegiate career.
Starzl, who was a member of Kearney's Missouri Class 4 championship team last season, made all six of his shots and equaled a career-high 12 points. Starzl also pulled down four rebounds.
Allen also played well in the paint, going 4-for-8 from the field and grabbing four rebounds.
The Bearcats were led by sophomore guard DeShaun Cooper, who finished with 19 points and six assists.
Northwest did a lot of things well in the first half. The Bearcats shot the ball better from the field than Emporia - 47.6 percent to 40.7 percent. They pulled down more rebounds - 16 to 9.
But there was one stat that was probably the biggest reason Northwest went into halftime down 30-23. The Bearcats turned the ball over nine times compared to just two for Emporia.

Series notes . . .
Saturday's meeting will be the 89th between the two schools and Washburn holds a 55-33 lead in the series. Washburn has won five of the last seven. The series dates back to the 1940-41 season and they have played each other every year since WU joined the MIAA in 1989-90. The Ichabods are 20-7 against the Bearcats in Lee Arena and have won the last three at home.
