Last time out for Central Missouri . . .
UCMO Sports Information -- Dec. 17, 2010 - The University of Central Missouri Mules made it three in a row going into the holiday break, edging a 78-74 home win over Pittsburg State on Saturday. Junior guard Boo Hunter scored a career-high 26 points to lead the way in a game that saw 54 fouls and 38 turnovers between the two teams.
The contest started out well for the Mules (8-3, 3-2 MIAA), who tallied a 10-2 lead in the first 5:30. The Gorillas (6-3, 2-3 MIAA) stormed back though, taking a 13-12 advantage with 9:43 to play on a Logan Jones layup. It was neck-and-neck for the rest of the half, with six ties and eight lead changes.
The Mules finally took more than a two-point lead just before the break, thanks to six consecutive points from senior guard Tyrone Young in the final 1:47. His long jumper with five seconds left made it 35-29 at the half.
PSU forward Chris Ware was the catalyst, leading all scorers with 12 at the half on 4-of-4 shooting. Young and Hunter each had 11 in the period for UCM, who hit 54.5 percent from the field. The Gorillas got after UCM on the glass though, taking an 18-11 rebound edge.
The Gorillas tied it two times early in the final period, but a three from Bryce Brunz at the 16:05 mark gave the Mules a lead for good. It was a sloppy stanza, with UCM turning it over 11 times, and PSU making nine miscues, while 35 fouls were called. The Mules scored 26 points from the foul line, while the Gorillas hit for 16 in the half.
Brunz and Hunter each scored 15 in the half, while Ryan Harris chipped in with 10, including two big three-pointers down the stretch. Central Missouri stretched its advantage to as many as 11 with 6:24 on the clock, but Pitt State didn't panic, shoveling the ball inside to Ware, and letting Eric Ray drive the lane.
The Gorillas cut it to only two on a Ray layup with 2:18 remaining, but each time they got within two, the Mules answered from the foul stripe, or with a stop. Central Missouri hit all 10 of its free throws in the final two minutes, including two by Harris with 11 seconds left to make it a four-point game and seal the win.
UCM drilled 34-of-46 free throws in the game, while PSU was 20-of-29. The Gorillas owned the inside and the boards, out-scoring the Mules 34-14 in the paint, and grabbing a 39-24 rebound edge. Central Missouri made Pittsburg State pay for its 20 turnovers though, scoring 27 points off them.
Three other Mules joined Hunter in double-figures, with Harris totaling 17, Brunz putting up 16, and Young finishing with 11. Ware scored 22 for PSU, while Ray scored all 16 of his points in the final period. JaVon McGee led all rebounders with 11 for the Gorillas, while no Mule had more than four.
