Ichabods travel to face Bulldogs in 1st MIAA road encounter

Countdown to tip . . .
The Washburn Ichabods will hit the road for the first time in MIAA play as they will travel to Kirksville, Mo., to face the Truman Bulldogs. Washburn (5-2, 2-1 MIAA) is coming off a 70-58 loss in Lee Arena to No. 6-ranked Fort Hays State. The Bulldogs (2-5, 0-3 MIAA) have lost their last four games with the last two MIAA games on the road in losses at Pittsburg State (91-68) and Southwest Baptist (108-75).

The Coaches . . .
Washburn Ichabod head basketball coach Bob Chipman is in his 32nd season at the helm of the Ichabod basketball program. For 25 years now Chipman has been the winningest coach in school history and in 2006-07 he became the second winningest coach as a member of the MIAA. Chipman is 683-280 (.710) overall and he has 441 wins since the Ichabods joined the MIAA - the most of any teams in the league since the 1991-92 season. Chipman is 11th amongst all NCAA II coaches in winning percentage who have coached at least 10 seasons. Among that group, he is second in all-time coaching victories in active coaches in career victories. Among all coaches who have at least 10 years experience in DII, he is 25th in winning percentage and seventh in victories. He is the third active winningest coach in NCAA Division II and 10th in winning percentage and his 683 coaching wins is 28th all-time among all NCAA coaches at all levels. At Washburn he has led the Ichabods to 11 conference regular season titles (9 MIAA), 10 NCAA Tournament appearances and the 1987 NAIA National Championship. Chipman is 35-12 against Truman.
Truman head coach Jack Schrader is in his 16th season on the Bulldog bench. Truman has made seven appearances in the MIAA postseason tournament. He has a 160-260 career record and, in 1998-99, led the team to one of the best seasons in school history, which concluded with an appearance in the NCAA Division II semifinals. Truman claimed the MIAA postseason tournament championship that year and Schrader was named the conference's co-coach of the year and the NABC Regional Coach of the Year. He is 8-23 against the Ichabods.
 
Last time out for the Ichabods . . .

(Dec. 8, 2010) TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Ichabods were held to a season-low 58 points in a 70-58 loss to No. 6 Fort Hays State in Lee Arena on Wednesday night.
After the teams were knotted at 7-7 with 14:30 to go in the game, the Tigers (9-0, 3-0 MIAA) would go on a 16-2 over the next five minutes building a 14-point lead with a 23-9 lead. Washburn cut the lead to six at 29-23 on a 3-pointer by Robert Sigala, who scored a career-high eight points off the bench before the Tigers would take a nine point lead into the locker room leading 33-24. Both teams struggled in the closing minutes of the half as the Tigers would go the final 2:39 of the half without a field goal while the Ichabods' final field goal of the half was on Sigala's 3-pointer with 4:07 to play in the stanza.
Washburn (5-2, 2-1 MIAA) had 10 turnovers in the opening half leading to 15 points for the Tigers while Forth Hays State committed only four turnovers.
In the second half, the Ichabods cut the lead to eight at 38-30 on a pair of Logan Stutz free throws 2:35 into the half, but the Tigers stretched the lead to as many as 16 at the five minute mark. The Ichabods were trimmed the lead to 10 twice at 64-54 with 2:50 to go and 66-56 with 1:44 to go, but Washburn would get no closer the rest of the way.
The Ichabods were led by Stutz who scored 18 points with eight rebounds taking game-high honors. De'Andrew Washington scored 15 with seven rebounds. The Tigers were led by Dijon Smith who scored 15.  Karron McKenzie had 12 and Dominique Jones chipped in 11.
The Ichabods finished their three-game home stand hitting 18 of 50 from the field while Fort Hays State was 26 of 52. The Ichabods were 16 of 23 from the line and the Tigers finished 13 of 16. Washburn had three of its 13 total turnovers in the first half leading to 15 points for the Tigers. Washburn did hold a 33 to 30 advantage on the glass holding the Tigers to five offensive rebounds.

Last meeting with Truman . . .
(Feb. 3, 2010) KIRKSVILLE, Mo. -- The Washburn Ichabods rallied from a halftime deficit holding the Truman Bulldogs without a field goal for the final 5:09 of the game and connected on all eight free throw attempts in the final eight minutes leading to a 62-53 win in Pershing Arena.
After the Bulldogs cut the lead to three and  eventually tie the score at Tom Norton hit  back-to-back 3-pointers knotting the score at 47  with 7:16 to go in the game.
Truman tied the score at 52 with 2:49 to go after  Stefan Garrison hit one of two free throws and 15  seconds later William McNeill scored on a jumper putting  the Ichabods back up two at 54-52 with 2:34 to go  in the game.
Truman's Ethan Freeman hit a one of two free  throws to cut the lead to one at 54-53, but  McNeill hit two free throws after a foul on Vesko Filchev with 1:57 putting the Ichabods up three  at 56-53.
A 3-point attempt by Norton for the Bulldogs was rebounded by Nate Daniels and the Ichabods called a timout with 56 seconds to go clinging to a three-point lead.
De'Andre Washington was fouled with 43 seconds remaining and hit both free throws putting the Ichabods up five at 58-53. He added two more free throws after a Bulldog foul with 24 seconds left putting Washburn up 60-53 helping secure the nine-point win.
The Ichabods used an 11-0 run turning a 28-26  Bulldog lead into a nine-point cushing at 37-28  with 15:25 to go in the game capped by a fast  break layup by Daniels off an assist from Bobby Chipman via a Truman turnover thanks to a steal from McNeill. However the Bulldogs rallied a trimmed the lead back to five at 37-32.  Truman cut the lead to three at 41-38 with under 11 minutes left but a lay up by Logan Stutz  pushed the lead back to five.
The Ichabods trailed 25-23 at the half after they  were limited to 8 of 32 shooting from the field.  The Bulldogs were 10 of 31 from the field. Each team recorded 23 rebounds. The Ichabod starters  in the first half were 3 of 20 from the field  while the Washburn players coming off the bench  were 5 of 12 scoring 15 of the 23 points in the  half.
Washington, McNeill and Stutz each scored 12 points to lead the Ichabods. Stutz recorded his second double double of the season with a game-high 10 rebounds. Daniels added a total of 10 points with five rebounds.
Ethan Freeman, Norton and Alex Henderson each had 11 to pace the Bulldogs.
The Ichabods finished the game 20 of 22 from the field going 14 of 15 in the second half hitting 91 percent for the contest. Truman finished 5 of 9 from the charity stripe. Washburn was 2 of 9 from 3-point range while the Bulldogs were 8 of 21 hitting 5 of 12 attempts in the second half.
Washburn led the Bulldogs on the boards outrebounding the host team 41 to 32 while recording 14 offensive rebounds leading to 10 second chance points for the Ichabods. Washburn also outscored the Bulldogs 32 to 18 in the paint, 6 to 0 in fast break points and a whopping 28 to 6 in bench points.  

About Truman . . .

The Bulldogs are 2-5 overall and 0-3 in MIAA play with two of the conference losses coming on the road. The two wins for Truman on Nov. 15 over Culver-Stockton 90-59 and Hannibal-LaGrange 82-47. Truman's other loss came to Division I UMKC in its season opener. Alex Henderson leads three Bulldogs in double figure scoring with 16.0 ppg. Ethan Freeman is averaging nearly a double double with 11.1 ppg and 9.6 rpg. Tom Norton is scoring 10.4 ppg. Overall the Bulldogs are averaging 74.1 ppg while allowing 77.6 ppg.

Last time out for Truman . . .

TSU Sports Information -- Dec. 7, 2010 - BOLIVAR, Mo. - - Both Ethan Freeman and Vesko Filchev recorded double-doubles, but the Truman men's basketball team ran into a Southwest Baptist squad that buried 19 three-pointers in a 108-75 Bearcat victory on Tuesday night.
Freeman (Urbandale, Iowa, Urbandale) finished with 13 points and 13 rebounds, while Filchev (Plovdiv, Bulgaria, GPCHE) scored 11 and added ten boards for the Bulldogs (2-5, 0-3 MIAA).
Truman led just once in the contest behind a three-pointer by Alex Henderson in the opening minute, but SBU opened the game on a 15-3 run and remained hot throughout the evening. The Bulldogs did shoot 43 percent from the field for the game and hit nine three-pointers, but hit 10-of-22 free throws and turned the ball over 24 times.
Joining Freeman and Filchev in double-figures offensively were Henderson and Tom Norton, who co-led the 'Dogs with 15 points apiece. Henderson added six assists – the most for any Bulldog – while Norton's five three-pointers tied SBU's Brock for the most on the evening.
The Bearcats countered though with depth beyond the perimeter, as seven different players hit three-pointers to total 19 on 42 attempts. More than half of the SBU shots came from distance, with the Bearcats converting on 40-of-79 total field goal attempts.
Both teams totaled 12 offensive rebounds, with Filchev's four leading all players.

Series notes . . .

Saturday's meeting will be the 54th between the two schools with Washburn holding a 37-16 lead in the series. The Ichabods have won the last seven meetings by an average score of 69-54. The series dates back to 1956-57 and the two have played each other every year since 1989-90. Two of the lowest combined scoring games in WU history came against Truman recently. On January 13, 2007, the Bulldogs won 60-45 as they combined for 105 points, the second lowest scoring output since WU joined NCAA II in 1989-90. On January 19, 2008 they scored 109 points in a 59-50 WU win. That was the third lowest scoring game in DII history for WU. Washburn is 13-7 against the Bulldogs on the road and 27-9 in MIAA contests against TSU in Lee Arena. Washburn has won the last three meetings with the Bulldogs in Topeka and the last three on the road.

Ichabod Basketball History . . .
Washburn is 1,391-965 (.590 in 2356 games) in its 105th season of intercollegiate action. The Ichabods are the ninth-winningest team in NCAA Division II history and the 26th winningest team this decade. The Ichabods are 440-199 since joining the NCAA Division II ranks, which is the most since the 1989-90 season in the MIAA.

Home sweet home - the Ichabods In Lee Arena . . .

The Ichabods are 345-64 (.848) all-time in Lee Arena - the 27th season of play. The Ichabods recorded a school-best 28-game winning streak from Nov. 19, 1993 to Feb. 8, 1995 in Lee Arena.
