Setting the scene . . .
The Washburn Ichabods (11-9, 5-8 MIAA) will wrap up a brief two-game road trip when they travel to Kirskville, Mo., to take on the Truman State University Bulldogs in Pershing Arena on Wednesday, Feb. 5 at 7:30 p.m. The Ichabods won the first meeting of the season between the two teams on Dec. 12 in Topeka 87-66. Washburn dropped a 74-63 decision last time out to Missouri Western snapping a four-game winning streak while the Bulldogs (4-16, 2-11) lost at home to Emporia State on Jan. 30. The Ichabods will return home after facing Truman to begin a three-game home stand beginning with Fort Hays State on Feb. 6 followed by Central Missouri on Feb. 10 and Southwest Baptist on Feb. 13.

The Coaches. . .
Washburn Ichabod head basketball coach
Bob Chipman is in his 31st season at the helm of the Ichabod basketball program. For 24 years now Chipman has been the winningest coach in school history and in 2006-07 he became the second winningest coach as a member of the MIAA. Chipman is 673-273 (.716) overall and he has 426 wins since the Ichabods joined the MIAA - the most of any teams in the league since the 1991-92 season. Chipman is 34-12 against Truman.
Truman head coach Jack Schrader is in his 15th season as head coach of the Bulldogs. He has an overall record of 157-248. Schrader has guided two Bulldog team to the NCAA Division II tournament. The 1998-99 team finished their season at the NCAA Final Four, while the 2005-06 team was a participant in the NCAA South Central regional.
Last time out for the Ichabods . . .
(Jan. 30, 2010) ST. JOSEPH, Mo. -- Washburn had its four-game winning snapped at Missouri Western as the Griffons topped the Ichabods 74-63 in the MWSU Fieldhouse.
The first half saw the teams battle back and forth in the early going with the Ichabods pushing out a lead of four early in the second half at 7-3. Neither team would lead by four until the Griffons broke a 22-all score finishing the final 6:02 of the half on a 14 to 5 run taking a 36-27 lead into halftime on a buzzer-beating 3-pointer by Just Taylor.
The Ichabods were 10 of 27 in the opening half hitting 38 percent from the field while the Griffons hit half of its shots hitting 14 of 28 attempts. William McNeill scored nine points in the first half, but he did not play the final 4:16 of the period after picking up his second personal foul.
De'Andre Washington added eight points.
The Ichabods scratched into the Griffon lead, who led by as many as 20 with 11:32 to go in the game drawing within 12 at 6:36 to go on a fastbreak dunk by
Logan Stutz. Washburn pulled with 10 after a stickback at 60-50 with 5:36 to go.
After a Griffon bucket pushing the lead to 12, McNeill pulled Washburn back to 10 with 5:04 to go and then a swipe and a bucket pulled Washburn within eight at 62-54 with 4:27 remaining.
A blocking call on Washburn with 3:53 remaining sent the Griffons to the line as Martin Nolan wrapped up a 3-point play pushing the Griffon lead back to 11.On the Ichabods' next possession, Washington connected on a 3-pointer from the top of the key trimming the Griffon lead to 65-57 with 3:40 to play.
The Ichabods forced a turnover and
Mitch Allen went to the line with the Ichabods trailing 66-57 with 2:31 to go and hit both pulling the Ichabods back with seven at 66-59.
Missouri Western hit a driving layup with 1:56 remaining and Washburn was whistled for another foul sending the Griffons to the free throw line, but Mike DeWalt hit one of two free throws pushing the lead back to 10 with 1:42 to go. A 3-pointer pulled the Ichabods within nine at 72-63 with 37 seconds to play, but the Ichabods would not get any closer.
McNeill led the Ichabods with 21 points on 8 of 13 shooting from the field. Washington recorded his eighth double double of the season with 19 points and 13 rebounds. Allen added a career-high nine points.
Washburn heated up to 46 percent shooting in the second half hitting 13 of 28 attempts from the field going 23 of 55 from the field. The Griffons finished 23 of 46 from the field.
The Ichabods were outrebounded 39 to 33 in the game, but did collect 14 offensive rebounds leading to 16 second chance points for Washburn.
About Truman . . .
Truman is 4-16 this season and 2-11 in the MIAA fall to Emporia State last time out at home 72-59. The Bulldogs snapped an 11-game losing streak beating Pittsburg State on Jan. 27 62-58 in Pittsburg before the loss to Emporia State on Jan. 30.
Vesko Filchev leads four Bulldogs in double-digit scoring with 11.6 ppg. Alex Henderson is scoring 11.0 ppg and Stefan Garrison (11.0 ppg) and Tom Norton (10.9 ppg) are also in reaching double figure averages per game. Ethan Freeman is averaging a team-high 9.0 rebounds per game and has led the team on the boards the five games recording totals of 11, 12, 11, 15 and 11.
The Bulldogs are averaging 66.9 ppg while allowing 76.2 ppg. Opponents are shooting 47 percent from the field against Truman while the Bulldogs are hitting 43 percent of their attempts. Truman is 3-7 in home games this season.
Last time out for the Bulldogs . . .
(Jan. 30, 2010) The Emporia State Hornets used a 10-0 run in the first half and kept the Truman Men's Basketball team at bay the rest of the way in a 72-59 victory in Pershing Arena on Saturday afternoon.
Lamar Wilbern and Taylor Euler's three-pointers sandwiched a pair of baskets by Adam Holthaus to take Emporia State (8-11; 4-8 MIAA) to an 11-point lead with 11:29 left in the first half.
Truman (4-16; 2-11 MIAA) pulled to within nine at 49-40 with 12:29 to play in the game when Alex Henderson made the first Bulldog three-pointer of the game after the team missed their first eight attempts from the perimeter.
The Hornets lead stayed between eight and 10 points over the next six minutes until an 8-0 run with six coming from the foul line put the game away for Emporia.
Vesko Filchev led Truman in scoring with 16 points on 5-of-9 shooting from the floor while Henderson added 12 and Stefan Garrison knocked down 10. Ethan Freeman had 11 rebounds with nine on the defensive end.
As a team, Truman shot 40% from the field and 50% in the second half but were held to a season-low two three-pointers on 13 attempts.
Wilbern led four Hornets in double-figures with 16 points and 11 rebounds.
Series Notes with Truman . . .
Wednesday's meeting will be the 53rd between the two schools with Washburn holding a 36-16 lead in the series. The Ichabods have won the last six meetings by an average score of 70-57. The series dates back to 1956-57 and the two have played each other every year since 1989-90. Two of the lowest combined scoring games in WU history came against Truman recently. On January 13, 2007, the Bulldogs won 60-45 as they combined for 105 points, the second lowest scoring output since WU joined NCAA II in 1989-90. On January 19, 2008 they scored 109 points in a 59-50 WU win. That was the third lowest scoring game in DII history for WU. Washburn is 12-7 against the Bulldogs on the road and 27-9 in MIAA contests against TSU in Lee Arena. Washburn has won the last three meetings with the Bulldogs in Topeka and the last two on the road.
Last Meeting with Truman . . .
(Dec. 12, 2009) --TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Ichabods started three true freshman for the first time in at least 25 years and rolled to an 87-66 win over Truman.

De'Andre Washington and William McNeill lin the starting line up. It was the first starts of the season for Chipman, Allen and McNeill and they responded with committing only one turnover in 112 minutes of action. The Ichabods as a team turned the ball over only six times. Coming into the game the Ichabods had been averaging 15.6 per game.
The Ichabods led from start to finish jumping out to a 10-3 lead over the Bulldogs (3-5, 1-2 MIAA) while holding a 13-6 lead at the first media timeout. The Ichabods would go on to lead by as many as 23 in the opening stanza at 45-22 following a pair of free throws by Allen with 28 seconds to play in the half.
Washburn shot 45 percent in the first half hitting 17 of 38 attempts from the field including 7 of 16 from 3-point range. The Bulldogs were held to 9 of 24 shooting and 3 of 11 from behind the 3-point line.
In the second half, the Ichabods kept the Bulldogs at least 15 points away as Truman cut the score to 70-55 with 6:27 remaining, but they would get no closer. Truman outscored the Ichabods in the second half 44 to 42 after hitting 58 percent of their shots. The Ichabods were also above 50 percent for the half hitting 17 of 32 attempts.
Washington led the Ichabods with 22 points with 12 coming in the first half. He was 3 of 6 from 3-point range. McNeill scored 20 points on 7 of 12 shooting while hitting 5 of 6 of his 3-point attempts. Also in double figures was
Virgil Philistin who scored 11 off the bench.

Washburn finished 34 of 70 from the field for a 49 percent average. Truman was 24 of 50 for a 48 percent clip. The Bulldogs held a slim 34 to 33 advantage on the glass while Washburn had 14 offensive rebounds leading to 14 second chance points. The Ichabod bench also outscored the Bulldog reserves 36 to 16.

Ichabod Basketball History . . .
Washburn is 1,371-958 (.682 in 2,329 games) in its 104th season of intercollegiate action. The Ichabods are the ninth-winningest team in NCAA Division II history and the 26th winningest team this decade. The Ichabods are 429-186 since joining the NCAA Division II ranks, which is the most since the 1989-90 season in the MIAA.
Ichabods In Lee Arena . . .
The Ichabods are 339-61 (.848) all-time in Lee Arena - the 26th season of play. The Ichabods recorded a school-best 28-game winning streak from Nov. 19, 1993 to Feb. 8, 1995 in Lee Arena. The Ichabods have won 15 straight regular season non-conference home games and 38 of their last 41 regular season non-conference games home.

In the 26th season of play, the very first team to play in the arena, the 1984-85 squad has been invited back for a 25-year celebration on Feb. 6 when the Ichabods play host to Fort Hays State.
