Setting the scene . . .
The Washburn Ichabods will wrap up a three-game homestand when they will play host to Southwest Baptist on Saturday night in Lee Arena with tip scheduled for 7:30 p.m. The Ichabods (12-11, 6-10 MIAA) are coming off a 64-54 loss to No. 3 Central Missouri last time out while the Bearcats (19-6, 10-5 MIAA) were knocked off by Emporia State on Wednesday night in Emporia 100-83. SBU, then ranked No. 11 in the country, topped the Ichabods in the first meeting of the season 73-62 in Bolivar on Jan. 5. The Ichabods enter the game in a tie for eighth place with Emporia State in the MIAA standings while the Bearcats are in third place - three games behind Fort Hays State and four behind Central Missouri. The top eight teams qualify for the MIAA postseason tournament in Kansas City beginning March 5.

Ichabods on Radio . . .
Ichabod games will be broadcast live on KTPK 106.9 FM. The game can also be heard on the internet at www.wusports.com by following the “Live Audio” link under basketball. Bruce Steinbrock will be the play-by-play voice of the Ichabods and former WU quarterback Mark Elliott will be the color analyst. Pregame show starts 15 minutes prior to tip.

The Coaches. . .
Washburn Ichabod head basketball coach Bob Chipman is in his 31st season at the helm of the Ichabod basketball program. For 24 years now Chipman has been the winningest coach in school history and in 2006-07 he became the second winningest coach as a member of the MIAA. Chipman is 674-275 (.716) overall and he has 427 wins since the Ichabods joined the MIAA - the most of any teams in the league since the 1991-92 season. Chipman is 23-20 against the Mules.
Bearcat head coach Jeff Guiot is in his sixth season in Bolivar, where he has led SBU to a 126-48 (.726) record. Guiot has a 344-142 record overall, and has never had a losing season in any season during his fifteen-year career. Guiot has won 20 games ten times, and has won eight conference titles, including three of the last four MIAA regular season championships while at SBU.
 
Last time out for the Ichabods . . .
(Feb. 10, 2010) - TOPEKA, Kan. -- A career-night by Washburn's Logan Stutz was not enough as the Ichabods fell to No. 3-ranked Central Missouri 74-64 in Lee Arena on Wednesday night.
The Ichabods trailed by as many as 11 in the first half at 15-4 with 10:42 to go in the opening stanza but rallied to take the lead on three different occasions with the final lead coming at 25-24 as De'Andre Washington wrapped up the 20-10 run with a lay up with 2:18 to go in the half. Central pushed the lead back to three, but Stutz scored on a lay up with five seconds left sending the Ichabods to the locker room trailing 30-29.
The Mules came out of the break and quickly pushed their lead to six at 35-29 with 18:55 to go. Following an Ichabod timeout, Washburn cut the lead to two - the final time coming at 37-35 after Virgil Philistin connected on a lay up. A 12 to 5 run stretched the Mule lead to 49-40 with 11:20 left. The Ichabods would trim the lead to five with just over 10 minutes to go on a lay up by Stutz and a pair of free throws by Bobby Chipman.
Again Central jumped back out to a nine point lead before the Ichabods would get within five at 56-51 on another Stutz lay up. A 12 to 3 run by the Mules over the next 4:04 would stretch the cushion to 14 and the Ichabods would get no closer than eight the rest of the way.
Stutz finished with a game-high 22 points off the bench hitting 10 of 12 shots and canning his only 3-point attempt while adding eight rebounds with five on the offensive end. Washington recorded his ninth double double of the season with 14 points and 11 rebounds and Mauice Colter added 11.
Alex Moosmann led the Mules with 20 points on 8 of 10 shooting from the field. Ryan Harris added 19 and Sanjay Watts had 17 and Bryce Brunz had 10.
The Ichabods outrebounded the Mules 35 to 28 in the game while holding Central Missouri to only three offensive rebounds. The Ichabods had 13 boards on their offensive end scoring 17 second chance points. The Ichabods outscored the Mules 34 to 12 in the paint as well.
Washburn finished the game 26 of 62 from the field for a 42 percent average while the Mules were 23 of 43 for 52 percent shooting. The Mules held a 28 to 10 advantage in free throw attempts while converting a total of 21 of 28 while the Ichabods were 7 of 10.
About Southwest Baptist . . .
Southwest Baptist is 19-6 on the season and 10-5 in MIAA play. They are scoring 87.3 points per game while only allowing 78.1 points per game. SBU's all-American center Matt Rogers has been sidelined since injuring his knee against Missouri Southern. He has missed the last three games with the ACL injury. Prior to the injury, Rogers was averaging 21.8 ppg and 8.8 rebounds per game. Kurtis Koenig is averaging 12.9 points and 5.7 rebounds per game this season. SBU had won 38 straight games in the Meyer Sports Center before losing to Nebraska-Omaha 99-91.

Last time out for the Bearcats . . .
(Feb. 10, 2010) EMPORIA, Kan. -- The SBU Bearcats fell 100-83 on the road Wednesday night at Emporia State. The Hornets shot 52% from the field, including 76% in the second half. Tomas Brock had a career high 24 points to lead SBU, while Kurt Koenig had a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds.
Ryan Dougherty and Tristan Steele each had 10 points for the Bearcats. Jacob French had nine points and six rebounds for the 'Cats.
Emporia State (10-13, 6-10 MIAA) was led by Lamar Wilbern with 23 points and six rebounds. Matt Boswell also had 19 points as ESU had five players in double figures. The Hornets forced 15 SBU turnovers, including 11 steals. Emporia was six of eight from outside and also hit 22 of 31 free throws in the second half.
Emporia jumped out to an early nine-point edge, before the Bearcats took the lead at 15-13. A layup by Stephen Cotten gave SBU their largest first half lead at 20-17. Later a three-pointer from ESU's Tim Niles gave the Hornets a 38-28 lead with two minutes left in the first half. The Hornets led 40-32 at halftime.
A strong start to the second half pushed the Hornet margin to as much as 25 points (66-41) before SBU cut down the deficit. The Bearcats closed the margin to 84-72 with 4:15 left, but the Hornets would hold off SBU down the stretch.

Series Notes with Southwest Baptist . . .
Saturday's meeting is the 43rd meeting between Washburn and Southwest Baptist with the Ichabods leading the all-time series 27-15. Washburn has won 16 of the last 23 games. Washburn is 22-10 against SBU in MIAA games. The series is the least-played matchup for Washburn against other MIAA teams with 42 games played. The Ichabods have won the last two games played in Topeka.

Last Meeting with Southwest Baptist . . .
(Jan. 5, 2010) -- BOLIVAR, Mo. -- The Washburn Ichabods again pushed a top 25-ranked team to the limit before falling late in a 73-62 loss at No. 11 Southwest Baptist at the Meyer Sports Center.
Washburn cut the lead to three on a Bobby Chipman's putback which pulled Washburn within three at 62-59, but SBU's Tristan Steele hit his second straight 3-pointer putting the Bearcats up 65-59 with 3:12 remaining.
Following a media timeout, the Ichabods' De'Andre Washington's jumper came up empty and the Ichabods' Maurice Colter was called for an offensive foul with just over two minutes left still trailing by six. The Bearcats turned it over on their next possession and Washburn missed their field goal attempt with 1:20 remaining.
After a pair of free throws with 1:13 to go by Matt Rogers, SBU increased the lead to 67-59 and the Ichabods would get no closer the rest of the way as SBU would hit 2 of 2 of their free throws wrapping up the win.
The Bearcats took an eight-point lead into the halftime break leading 36-28. The Ichabods outshot Southwest Baptist 40 percent to 35 percent hitting 12 of 30 attempts while SBU was 8 of 23 from the field. However the Bearcats were 16 of 17 from the free throw line compared to 4 of 8 from the charity stripe for Washburn. Washburn was cold from behind the 3-point line missing all 10 attempts while SBU was 4 of 12. The Ichabods were whistled for 13 fouls compared to eight for SBU.
The Ichabods were led by Washington who scored a game-high 22 points while pulling down a team-high eight rebounds. Virgil Philistin scored 13 off the bench hitting 3 of 5 3-point attempts in the game.
SBU's Stelle led the Bearcats with 21 points while hitting 5 of his team's 7 3-pointers. Rogers scored 18 points and Kurtis Koenig scored 14 with nine rebounds.
Washburn finished the game shooting 42 percent hitting 25 of 59 attempts while SBU was 21 of 48. SBU hit 7 of 23 3-point attempts while the Ichabods werew 2 of 20 from behind the arc. The Bearcats enjoyed a 24 of 25 performance from the free throw line while Washburn was 10 of 15. The win was the 38th in a row for SBU at home.

The Ichabods are the ninth-winningest team in NCAA Division II history and the 26th winningest team this decade. The Ichabods are 430-188 since joining the NCAA Division II ranks, which is the most since the 1989-90 season in the MIAA.

Ichabods In Lee Arena . . .
The Ichabods are 339-63 (.848) all-time in Lee Arena - the 26th season of play. The Ichabods recorded a school-best 28-game winning streak from Nov. 19, 1993 to Feb. 8, 1995 in Lee Arena.
