Lady Blues drop opening games at ASU Blue and Gold Classic

SAN ANGELO, Texas -- The Washburn Lady Blues softball team dropped their opening games at the ASU Blue and Gold Classic hosted by Angelo State University. Washburn fell in its opener 5-2 to Texas A&M-International before bowing to No. 19 Angelo State 4-2 in the nightcap. Washburn will be back in action on Sunday when they will face Incarnate Word and Texas Permian-Basin in games three and four of the five-game event.

The Lady Blues fell behind in the bottom of the first as Texas A&M-International scored an unearned run jumping out to the early lead. The Lady Blues battled back in the top of the third to tie the score as Lauren Himpel was sent home by a Lindsey Himpel triple for the first Washburn run of the season. Texas A&M-Internation took the lead in the bottom of the third and again the Lady Blues tied the score in the fourth on a lead off home run by Britny Cushing. A&M added three in the bottom of the fifth to put the game out of reach. Cushing finished with two hits to pace the Lady Blues. Samantha Farris took the loss allowing four earned runs.

The No. 19-ranked Rambelles jumped out to a 3-0 lead after two innings before the Lady Blues scored two runs in the top of the fourth inning when Britny Cushing hit her second home run of the day driving in Lindsey Himpel who led off the inning with a single. Angelo State added a solo run in the fifth while holding Washburn scoreless the remainder of the game.
The Lady Blues were limited to three hits in the game. Kayla Long took the loss.
