Washburn picks up first win of 2010 at Angelo State Classic

SAN ANGELO, Texas -- The Washburn Lady Blues softball team picked up their first win of the season while splitting a pair of games in the second day of the ASU Blue and Gold Classic hosted by Angelo State. The Lady Blues (1-3) fell to Incarnate Word 7-2 before topping Texas Permain-Basin 7-0. In the second game, Washburn's Tish Williams hit her 50th career home run. The Lady Blues will wrap up the classic on Monday when they face West Texas A&M.

The Cardinals turned a pitcher's dual through four innings scoring all seven runs in the final three innings taking a 7-2 win over the Lady Blues. Washburn plated both runs in the bottom of the sixth inning after Lauren Himpel led off the inning with a single to left and scored on home run by Lindsey Himpel - her first of the season. Kelsie Novotny took the loss allowing four earned runs stiking out two. The Cardinal pounded out 12 hits in the game. Lindsey Himpel finished with two of the four hits.

Kayla Long took a no-hitter into the fourth inning before giving up a single in a 7-0 complete-game one-hit shutout in Washburn's first win of the season. Tish Williams hit her 50th home run of her career moving her within three of the MIAA's career record as part of a four-run third inning. The Lady Blues added solo runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings leading to the 7-0 win. Williams finished with two hits and two RBI. Lindsey Moore also had two hits. Long finished with seven strikeouts.
