Setting the scene . . .
The Washburn Ichabod postseason begins on Saturday when they will play host to Pittsburg State in the final regular season home game of the season. The Ichabods (13-12, 7-11 MIAA) will need to beat Pittsburg State (8-16, 2-15 MIAA) on Saturday and then win at Emporia State next Wednesday to have any chance at the MIAA tournament. The Ichabods are coming off a 77-54 loss at Missouri Southern last time out while the Gorillas were topped by Emporia State 65-42 at home. The Ichabods won the first meeting of the season on Jan. 13 in Pittsburg 62-54. The Ichabods currently sit in ninth place in the MIAA standings one-half game behind Northwest Missouri who has a 7-10 MIAA record. Emporia State is in seventh with an 8-10 mark. The top eight teams qualify for the MIAA postseason tournament in Kansas City beginning March 5.

Ichabods on Radio . . .
Ichabod games will be broadcast live on AM 580 WIBW. The game can also be heard on the internet at www.wusports.com by following the “Live Audio” link under basketball. Bruce Steinbrock will be the play-by-play voice of the Ichabods and former WU quarterback Mark Elliott will be the color analyst. Pregame show starts 15 minutes prior to tip.

Ichabods on Television . . .
The game with the Gorillas will be broadcast on both KTWU and Kansas Cox 22. Mark Ewing will provide  the play-by-play and Mike Manns will be the color analyst.

The Coaches. . .
Washburn Ichabod head basketball coach Bob Chipman is in his 31st season at the helm of the Ichabod basketball program. For 24 years now Chipman has been the winningest coach in school history and in 2006-07 he became the second winningest coach as a member of the MIAA. Chipman is 675-276 (.716) overall and he has 431 wins since the Ichabods joined the MIAA - the most of any teams in the league since the 1991-92 season. Chipman is 45-16 against Pittsburg State.
Pittsburg State's Gene Iba is in his 15th and final season leading the Gorillas. Iba (Tulsa, '63), who has led Pitt State to the school's first five NCAA Tournament appearances (1997-99, 2005, 2007) and an MIAA Championship (1999) during a decorated 15-year tenure, announced on Sept. 16 his intention to retire following the 2009-10 campaign. He coaches in his 30th, and final, season as a collegiate coach with a 486-373 career mark, including a 260-170 record at Pitt State.
 
Last time out for the Ichabods . . .
(Feb. 17, 2010) - JOPLIN, Mo. -- A 21-6 run by Missouri Southern was too much for the Washburn to overcome as the Lions topped the Ichabods 77-54 in the Leggett & Platt Center in Joplin, Mo.
The Ichabods (13-12, 7-11 MIAA) were limited to 34 percent shooting from the field as they hit 11 of 32 attempts and 1 of 5 3-point attempts. The Lions (15-9, 9-8 MIAA) hit 56 percent of their shots going 15 of 27 including a 7 of 12 performance from behind the 3-point line as the Lions took a 40-26 lead into the halftime locker room.
The second half saw the Lions increase the lead to as many as 23 with 6:41 to play in the stanza before taking the 23-point win.
Logan Stutz led the Ichabods with 16 points on 8 of 10 shooting from the field. William McNeill scored 13 and De'Andre Washington scored nine - all coming in the second half.
Skyler Bowlin led the Lions with 23 points with 17 points coming in the first half as he hit five 3-pointers. He finished the game 7 of 10 from the field hitting 5 of 7 3-point attempts.
Washburn finished the game 19 of 56 from the field while the Lions were 25 of 51. The Lions hit eight 3-pointers compared to two for the Ichabods.
Washburn was outrebounded 36 to 32. The Ichabods also committed 17 turnovers leading to 26 points for the Lions.
The loss dropped the Ichabods into ninth place in the MIAA standings with two games to play - against Pittsburg State in Lee Arena on Saturday and at Emporia State on Wednesday. The Ichabods need to win both to have any shot at finishing in the eighth slot in the conference standings. Emporia State is one game ahead of the Ichabods in the MIAA ledger with an 8-10 conference record. The Hornets games remaining with Washburn next Wednesday and at Fort Hays State on the final Sunday of the conference slate.

About Pittsburg State . . .
Pittsburg State is 8-16 overall and 2-15 in the MIAA after falling to Emporia State 65-42 on Wednesday. The 42-points were a season-low for the Gorillas. PSU has dropped 10 of the last 11 games. The Gorillas are led by Spencer Magana's 16.9 points per game. He is averaging 16.2 ppg in MIAA play and his hit 63 of 164 3-point attempts this season. Rodney Grace is the only other Gorilla averaging in double figures this season at 14.2 ppg. JaVon McGee is averaging a team-high 6.2 rebounds.

Last time out for the Gorillas . . .
(Feb. 17, 2010) PITTSBURG — Lamar Wilbern led three Emporia State players in double figures with 16 points to pace the visiting Hornets to a 65-42 victory over Pittsburg State Wednesday night at John Lance Arena.
Emporia (12-13, 8-10 MIAA) broke open an eight point game with 16:42 remaining, outscoring Pitt State (8-16, 2-15 MIAA) 9-0 over the next five minutes to take control. The Hornets ballooned their margin to as many as 23 points with 7:37 remaining and the Gorillas never got any closer than 16 down the stretch.
Emporia shot 52.3 percent from the field (23 of 44), while holding Pitt State to a tepid 31.9 percent night (15 of 47).
Wilbern scored 13 of his game-high 16 in the second half for the Hornets, while Matt Boswell added 13 points and a game-high seven rebounds. Jeremiah Box finished with 12 points.
Rodney paced the Gorillas with 14 points, while Spencer Magana added eight points and four assists and Henry Rogers chipped in with six points and six rebounds.

Series Notes with Pittsburg State . . .
Saturday's meeting is the 163rd meeting between the two schools and Washburn leads the series, 90-72. The Ichabods have won the last four meetings. The Ichabods are 24-2 in Lee Arena against PSU and 22-12 against the Gorillas in MIAA play. The home team is 22-6 in the last 28 regular season meetings, dating back to 1996-97. The series goes back to 1919-20 and it has been played at least once a year since 1941-42. WU coach Bob Chipman is 45-16 against PSU and Gorillas coach Gene Iba is 11-20 against the Ichabods.
 
Last Meeting with Pittsburg State . . .
(Jan. 13, 2010) -- PITTSBURG, Kan. -- The Ichabods snapped a five-game losing streak as Logan Stutz returned to the Washburn line up scoring 17 points with 13 coming in the second half as Washburn topped Pittsburg State 62-54.
The Ichabods (8-8, 2-7 MIAA) held the Gorillas without a field goal for 9:58 in the second half as Pittsburg State (7-8, 1-7 MIAA) finished the half 8 of 24 in the final stanza.
Stutz had not appeared in a game since the Dec. 28th loss to Missouri Western in Topeka, but returned to lead the Ichabods with 17 points off the bench hitting 7 of 9 shots from the field. De'Andre Washington recorded his fifth double double of the season with 10 points and 12 rebounds. Maurice Colter scored nine points while dishing out a game-high six assists.
Rodney Grace led the Gorillas wit 25 points hitting 8 of 11 attempts from the field. Spencer Magana scored all 15 of his points in the first half.
The bench scored 31 of the Ichabods' 62 points on the night while turning the ball over only twice in the final 20 minutes.
The Ichabods outshot the Gorillas 42 percent to 40 percent as the Ichabods hit 23 of 55 attempts while Gorillas were 17 of 43. Washburn had 17 assists on 23 field goals and out rebounded the Gorillas 34 to 32. After going 4 of 10 from the free throw line in the first half, the Ichabods were a perfect 9 of 9 from the charity stripe in the second half. The Gorillas finished the game 16 of 30 from the stripe.
The win was the fourth straight in the series over the Gorillas as Washburn improved to 90-72 all-time against Pitt State. The home team improved to 23-5 in the last 28 teams.

The Ichabods are the ninth-winningest team in NCAA Division II history and the 26th winningest team this decade. The Ichabods are 431-189 since joining the NCAA Division II ranks, which is the most since the 1989-90 season in the MIAA.

Ichabods In Lee Arena . . .
The Ichabods are 340-63 (.848) all-time in Lee Arena - the 26th season of play. The Ichabods recorded a school-best 28-game winning streak from Nov. 19, 1993 to Feb. 8, 1995 in Lee Arena. The Ichabods have won 15 straight regular season non-conference home games and 38 of their last 41 regular season non-conference games home.
