Setting the scene . . .
The Washburn Ichabods can guarantee a postseason berth with a win on Wednesday at Emporia State in the second edition of the Turnpike Tussle. The Ichabods (14-12, 8-11 MIAA) currently sit in eighth in the MIAA standings, one-half game behind Emporia State (12-13, 8-10 MIAA). The Ichabods are coming off a 77-61 win over Pittsburg State on Saturday and the Hornets also topped the Gorillas in their last game on Feb. 17 in a 65-42 win on the road. The Ichabods can still get in with a loss at Emporia State providing Northwest Missouri would lose each of two remaining games - on Tuesday night at Southwest Baptist and at home on Feb. 24 against Missouri Southern. The Ichabods handed the Hornets their largest defeat of the season on Jan. 16 in Lee Arena in a 73-42 win - which also tied the largest Ichabod victory margin in the 192-game series history. The series is tied with each team winning 96 games each.

Ichabods on Radio . . .
Ichabod games will be broadcast live on AM 580 WIBW. The game can also be heard on the internet at www.wusports.com by following the “Live Audio” link under basketball. Bruce Steinbrock will be the play-by-play voice of the Ichabods and former WU quarterback Mark Elliott will be the color analyst. Pregame show starts 15 minutes prior to tip.

The Coaches. . .
Washburn Ichabod head basketball coach Bob Chipman is in his 31st season at the helm of the Ichabod basketball program. For 24 years now Chipman has been the winningest coach in school history and in 2006-07 he became the second winningest coach as a member of the MIAA. Chipman is 676-276 (.716) overall and he has 432 wins since the Ichabods joined the MIAA - the most of any teams in the league since the 1991-92 season. Chipman is 45-19 against Emporia State.
Emporia State head coach David Moe is 143-110 in his ninth season at ESU and is 131-86 since 2002-03. He led ESU to appearances in the NCAA Tournament in 2004 and 2007 and winning seasons in seven of the last eight years. He is the third winningest coach in ESU history behind Gus Fish and Ron Slaymaker.
 
Last time out for the Ichabods . . .
(Feb. 20, 2010) - TOPEKA, Kan. -- De'Andre Washington led four Ichabods in double figures as Washburn keeps its postseason hopes alive with a 77-61 win over Pittsburg State.
The Ichabods led by nine at the break by a score of 35 to 26 after shooting 55 percent in the first half connecting on 12 of 22 attempts. The Gorillas were 11 of 25 for a 44 percent average.
The Gorillas would not get any closer than five in the second half at 48-43. With Washburn leading by six at 54-48 with 7:47 to go, the Gorillas' Spencer Magana, who just hit a 3-pointer, was whistled for a technical on a drive by Logan Stutz. Stutz hit four straight free throws pushing the lead to 10 and Washburn kept the Gorillas in a double digit deficit the remainder of the game stretching the lead to as many as 18 late in the second half.
Washington scored 12 of his 17 points in the second half to lead the Ichabods and take game-high honors. William McNeill scored 15 points while hitting 8 of 10 free throws. Stutz finished with 11 points and Nate Daniels scored 10 points. Maurice Colter added a game-high seven rebounds.
Rodney Grace led the Gorillas with 15 points and seven rebounds.

About Emporia State . . .
Emporia State is 12-13 overall and 8-10 in the MIAA after topping at Pittsburg State 65-42 on Feb. 17 in their last game. The Hornets have been off since then. Overall the Hornets have won their last three games with two of the wins coming at home. This season in White Auditorium, the Hornets are 7-6. Lamar Wilburn leads the team in scoring averaging 14.6 ppg. Wilburn is scoring 15.3 ppg in MIAA play. Tim Niles is scoring with a 14.0 ppg  while Adam Holthaus is scoring 13.0 ppg. ESU is averaging 77.8 ppg while allowing 75.2 ppg. They are -2.5 in rebound margin this year while hitting 199 of 531 3-point attempts for a 38 percent average. They have six more field goals than their opponents this season (671 to 665) and one more 3-pointer (199 to 198) than their foes this season. ESU has hit 51 more free throws (403 to 352) while attempting 68 more charity attempts (572 to 504).
 
Last time out for the Gorillas . . .
(Feb. 17, 2010) PITTSBURG — All nine players that suited up scored for Emporia State in a 65-42 win over Pittsburg State in John Lance Arena on Wednesday night.
Matt Boswell hit back to back three pointers in the final two minutes of the first half to send ESU to the locker room with a 33-23 lead. The Hornet lead would grow to as many as 23 points in the second half.
Lamar Wilbern scored 16 points to lead three Hornets in double figures. He was joined by Matt Boswell with 13 points and Jeremiah Box with 12 points. Boswell had a game high seven rebounds while Tim Niles dished a game high six assists.

Series Notes with Emporia State . . .
Wednesday's meeting will be the 193rd meeting between these two schools and the series is tied 96-96 after the Ichabods have won the last two in the series. This is the most-played series for Washburn. The two teams started the series in 1905-06, Washburn's first recorded year of basketball, and they have met every year since the 1945-46 season. This will be the 65th straight year they have played each other at least once. Washburn is 25-29 all-time in White Auditorium since home-away records were first kept beginning in 1956-57. ESU has won the last four meetings in Emporia and six of the last seven. Prior to that, Washburn was 14-2 in the last 16 away games. The Ichabods are 19-7 against the Hornets in Lee Arena. Washburn is 24-11 against ESU in MIAA games. Washburn is 3-0 against ESU in MIAA Postseason tournament games.
 
Last Meeting with Emporia State . . .
(Jan. 16, 2010) -- TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Ichabods won their second straight game tying the Turnpike Tussle series for Washburn largest margin of victory in a 73-42 win over Emporia State. The 31-point win tied Ichabod wins during the 1951-52 season (69-38) and during the 1998-99 season (83-52).
The Ichabods jumped out to a lead as many as 26 in the first half as De'Andre Washington hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer giving the Ichabods a 38-12 halftime cushion going into the locker room. The Ichabods held the Hornets to just 3 of 22 shooting from the field for a 14 percent average while the Ichabods were 12 of 22 for a 55 percent average. The Ichabods also hit 5 of 10 3-pointers while ESU was limited to 1 of 13. The Hornets did not hit double-digit points until the 2:12 mark of the opening half.
In the second half, the Ichabods pushed the lead to 36 on a 3-pointer by Mitch Allen with 48 seconds left while cruising to the 31-point win.
Washburn was led by De'Andre Washington who scored 14 of his 19 points in the first half while hitting 6 of 9 attempts from the field including 4 of 5 3-pointers. William McNeill also hit double figures scoring 17. Logan Stutz came off the bench just missing a double double with nine points and a game-high 12 rebounds.
Dustin Andrews and Lamar Wilbern each had 10 to pace Emporia State (7-9, 3-6 MIAA).
The Ichabods finished 24 of 50 from the field and the Hornets were 13 of 47 from the field. Washburn also hit 13 of 25 3-point attempts and 12 of 16 shots from the free throw line.

The Ichabods are the ninth-winningest team in NCAA Division II history and the 26th winningest team this decade. The Ichabods are 432-189 since joining the NCAA Division II ranks, which is the most since the 1989-90 season in the MIAA.

Ichabods In Lee Arena . . .
The Ichabods are 341-63 (.848) all-time in Lee Arena - the 26th season of play. The Ichabods recorded a school-best 28-game winning streak from Nov. 19, 1993 to Feb. 8, 1995 in Lee Arena. The Ichabods have won 15 straight regular season non-conference home games and 38 of their last 41 regular season non-conference games home.

Up Next . . .
Time will tell. The Ichabods now sit in eighth in the MIAA standings with one game to play. Emporia State has an 8-10 conference record and Northwest Missouri has a 7-11 record. The Ichabods can clinch a spot in the MIAA tournament with a win at Emporia State (8-10 MIAA) or a loss by Northwest Missouri in each of their final two games. The Bearcats have remaining games at Southwest Baptist on Feb. 23 and at home against Missouri Southern on Feb. 27. Emporia State will play on Sunday, Feb. 28 at Fort Hays State to wrap up the regular season.
