JOPLIN, Mo. -- The Washburn Lady Blues opened the MSSU/PSU Crossover Invitational with a 3-2, eight inning win over Wayne State in Joplin, Mo. Washburn (2-4) will be back in action with three games on Saturday beginning with Rockhurst prior to taking on Southeastern Oklahoma and Drury then wrapping up the invitational with Missouri S&T on Sunday.
The Lady Blues broke open a scoreless tie in the top of the fifth inning when
Alex Zordel homered to left center. The Wildcats tied it in the bottom of the seventh sending the game to extra frames.
Lauren Mersman was placed on second base to lead off the inning using the international tie-breaker rule and was moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Marissa Martin.
Lauren Himpel hit her first home run of the season scoring herself and Mersman putting Washburn up 2-1.
Wayne State added an unearned run in the bottom of the eighth stranding one runner.
Kayla Long pitched all eight innings for the Lady Blues allowing one earned run while striking out seven and walking one allowing just two hits.
