Lady Blues go 4-1 at PSU/MSSU Crossover Invitational

JOPLIN, Mo. -- The Washburn Lady Blues softball team wrapped up the MSSU/PSU Crossover Invitational with a 14-4 win over the Missouri S&T Lady Miners. Washburn went 4-1 during the event and they will be back in action March 5 at the Lady Buff Invitational in Canyon, Texas.

Washburn scored 12 runs over the first three innings holding the Lady Miners scoreless until the bottom of the fourth inning.

After the Lady Blues scored a solo run in the top of the first on an RBI by Ashley Podschun, the Lady Blues exploded for six runs in the top of the second capped by 2-RBI singles by Lindsey Himpel, Jacque Horejsi and Alex Zordel.

Washburn (5-5) scored five more in the third inning capped by a grand slam by Horejsi pushing the lead to 12-0. The Lady Miners added three in the third. In the fifth inning, Tish Williams hit her 51st career home run moving with two of breaking the MIAA's career home run record.

Kortnea Morgan picked up her first collegiate win striking out six scattering six hits allowing four runs.

For the weekend, Washburn went 4-1 to even their record at 5-5 for the season. Marissa Martin was 6 for 13 to lead the team with a .462 batting average. Zordel batted .400 going 6 of 15 with two home runs and 5 RBI. Horejsi collected a team-high 12 RBI while batting .250. As a team the Lady Blues batted .278 while their opponents hit .241. Samantha Farris went 2-0 with a 2.0 ERA while pitching two complete games.
