Last time out for the Mules . . .
(Jan., 30 2010) WARRENSBURG, Mo. -- The No. 3 Central Missouri Mules rolled to an 82-64 win over Emporia State tonight, and in the process hit several milestones, including head coach Kim Anderson's school-record tying 178th win.
He matched UCM Hall of Famer Tad Reid, who was 178-110 in 15 seasons from 1923-38. Anderson's career record now sits at 178-60 in only his eighth season. Anderson also wrapped up his fifth 20-win season in the last six years, matching Lynn Nance for the most years in that category. It was the 22nd 20-win season ever at UCM.
The Mules 20-1 start is the best through 21 games since 1980 when UCM started 25-1, and it also clinched a berth in the MIAA Tournament. Individually, senior forward Sanijay Watts became the 19th player in school history to surpass the 1,000-point milestone, and only the eighth two-year player to do it. He put up 24 points on the night and now sits at 1,005. Getting overshadowed was a career night from junior guard Ryan Harris. He put up a career-high 28 points in the contest.
The Hornets (9-12, 5-9 MIAA) actually started the game off with an 8-0 run, forcing the Mules (20-1, 13-1 MIAA) to come back from that much for the first time all season in a win. They chipped away at the advantage and cut it to one at 17-16 with 9:59 left on a Harris three-pointer. Harris hit a jumper with 7:15 left to give UCM its first lead of the day at 21-20. Emporia answered, but the Mules went on a 14-0 spurt over the next five-plus minutes to take control and go into the break up 38-27.
The Mules came out with another flurry in the second stanza, pushing their lead to 19 in the first three minutes. Emporia only had one run in them, closing to 11 with 14:11 left, but UCM answered with another big run to put it away, going up by 23 with 8:06 left on another Harris jumper. UCM lit it up in the half, shooting 63 percent from the field, while holding the Hornets to only eight boards.
The Mules hit 55.6 percent in the game, led by Harris' 10-of-16 performance with six threes. Watts went 8-of-12 from the field along with a game-high seven boards. Alex Moosmann matched a season-high with nine assists (did it against ESU last time they met) to only one turnover with nine points.
