Washburn splits season-opening MIAA doubleheader

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. -- The Washburn Lady Blues split their MIAA-opening doubleheader Friday afternoon in St. Joseph, Mo., falling in the first game 9-0 in five innings before taking the nightcap 3-1. Washburn (12-11, 1-1 MIAA) will be back in action on Saturday in Kirksville, Mo., against Truman.

Game 1 - Missouri Western 9, Washburn 0 (5 innings)

Wahburn fell behind 7-0 after the first three innings and could not recover as the Griffons' Jonnelle Belger limited the Lady Blues to two base hits in a 9-0 win. Lauren Himpel led off the game for the Lady Blues with a double down the left field line. Washburn was held without a hit until the top of the third when Marissa Martin legged out an infield single. Washburn stranded five base runners while the Griffons pounded out 12 hits in the game.

Game 2 - Washburn 3, Missouri Western 1

After the Griffons broke a scoreless game open in the bottom of the fourth with a solo run, the lady Blues tied the score in their next at bat in the top of the fifth. Katie Duncan led off the inning with a single. Lauren Mersman came in the game as a pinch runner and later scored on a double to left by Lindsey Himpel. Washburn went ahead for good in the top of the seventh. Lauren Himpel doubled to left field and Lindsey Himpel singled. Lauren scored on a wild pitch and Lindsey scored on an RBI single to left by Ashley Podschun. Kayla Long (6-7) picked up the complete game win striking out one forcing the Griffons into 16 ground outs with one strikeout scattering five hits. Washburn had nine hits in the game.
