TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Lady Blues split an MIAA doubleheader with Missouri Southern falling in the first game 3-0 while going into extra innings in the nightcap to take the second game 4-3 in nine innings. Washburn will be back in action on April 16 when they open the MIAA Crossover in Maryville, Mo.
In the opener, Washburn was limited to five hits in the game with three coming from
Tish Williams who was a perfect 3 for 3 in the game.
Jacque Horejsi and
Lindsey Moore each had singles for the Lady Blues. Washburn stranded four base runners in the game while Missouri Southern's Whitney Clute picked up the win scattering the five hits.
Kayla Long took the loss allowing two earned runs forcing the Lions into 12 ground outs.
Washburn needed nine innings to put the Lions away in the second game as
Lindsey Moore collected her first hit of the game driving in
Lauren Himpel with the winning run. Himpel singled to left reaching base and then moved to second on a sac bunt by
Alex Zordel. The Lady Blues fought back from an 3-2 deficit in the bottom of the eighth after the Lions had took the one-run lead in the inning.
Tish Williams singled to lead off the inning and scored from second on an
Ashley Podschun single down the left field line knotting the score at 2-2.
Kelsie Novotny (6-2) pitched two innings for the win relieving
Samantha Farris who tossed the first seven innings of the game.
Britny Cushing had 2 RBI for the Lady Bleus and
Jacque Horejsi had two of the nine Washburn hits.
