BOLIVAR, Mo. -- The Washburn Lady Blues split an MIAA doubleheader against Southwest Baptist falling in the first game 3-1 before rebounding to take the nightcap 12-5. Washburn (23-18, 9-6 MIAA) will be back in action on Tuesday against Emporia State on the road in the Turnpike Tussle on the softball fields.
In the opener, SBU broke open a scoreless game in the bottom of the second with a pair of runs jumping out to a 2-0 lead. Washburn cut the lead in half on
Tish Williams' 12th home run of the season and the 61st of her career but it would be the only run of the game for the Lady Blues as Washburn stranded eight base runners in scoring position in the game. Washburn outhit the Bearcats 7 to 3 in the game.
Kayla Long took the loss striking out five scattering three hits. Williams and
Lindsey Himpel each had two hits for Washburn.
In the second game of the twinbill, Washburn scored two runs in the top of the fourth on home runs by
Lauren Himpel and
Lindsey Moore taking a 2-0 lead. Washburn added three in the fifth with one run coming on a solo home run
Ashley Podschun and two more coming on a two-run home run by
Britny Cushing. Southwest Baptist scored three in the bottom of the fifth inning - all coming on a three-run shot by Krysta Baderdeen. Washburn broke the game open in a seven-run sixth inning breaking the score sending 11 batters to the plate. Washburn recorded three doubles in the inning with a 2 RBI double by
Lindsey Himpel and an RBI double by
Marissa Martin. Podschun recorded an RBI single as did Moore in the inning. Kortnea Morgan (3-1) picked up the win pitching six innings with four strikeouts. Washburn outhit the Bearcats 12 to 9 with Podschun leading the way going 3 for 5 with two runs scored and 2 RBI. Cushing also had two RBI as did
Lindsey Himpel.
