Lady Blues swept by No. 8 Emporia State in Turnpike Tussle

EMPORIA, Kan. -- The Washburn Lady Blues were swept by No. 8 Emporia State falling 8-0 in six innings in the first game then falling 3-2 in the second game of the twinbill. Washburn (23-20, 7-8 MIAA) will be back in action at Central Missouri on Thursday.

In the first game, Washburn was limited to three hits as Emporia State starter Paige Ladenburger (15-4) held the Lady Blues without a hit until the third inning when Tish Williams broke up the no-no with a single in the top of the third. The Hornets scored two runs in each of the second, third, fifth and sixth innings to win the 8-0 run-ruled win as ESU won their 20th straight over the Lady Blues. Alex Zordel and  Marissa Martin each had singles for Washburn as the Hornets outhit the Lady Blues 14 to 3. Smantha Farris took the loss dropping to 4-4 on the season.

In the nightcap,  the Lady Blues jumped on the board in the first inning as Williams led off the game with a walk and then moved to second on a sac bunt by Lindsey Himpel. Ashley Podschun singled to left and then advanced to second on an error by the left fielder picking up an RBI scoring Williams. Neither team scored until the Hornets scored in the bottom of the fifth when Linda Ketter scored an unearned run on a fielder's choice by Angela Mahan. The Hornets' Abby Hughes led off the sixth inning with a single and then stole second base. Miranda Campbell walked and then stole second base as Hughes stole third. Amanda Self then singled scoring Hughes and advanced to second on the throw home. The Hornets added another run in the inning on a sac fly by Anny Smith scoring Campbell from third pushing Emporia State to a 3-1 lead. In the seventh, Washburn's rally came up short after Martin reached base after being hit by a pitch and then moved to second on a single by Williams. Both moved up a base after Lindsey Himpel grounded out to third and then Martin scored on a single by Podschun moving Williams to third cutting the lead to 3-2. However Alex Zordel grounded out to first to end the game. Williams finished 2 for 3 with one runs scored and Podschun picked up two singles and two RBI while Lindsey Himpel doubled. Kayla Long (10-13) took the loss in the circle for Washburn. The Lady Blues stranded eight runners on base while the Hornets stranded four.
