TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Lady Blues swept Northwest Missouri in MIAA action taking the first game 7-2 while taking the nightcap 13-8 at the Washburn Softball Complex. Washburn (14-11, 2-2 MIAA) will be back in action on Tuesday when they will play host to Nebraska-Omaha at 2 p.m.
In the opener, Washburn fell behind 2-0 after 3 1/2 innings, but scored two runs in the fourth, three in the fifth and two more in the sixth in the 7-2 win. In the fourth, Washburn took advantage of a Northwest Missouri (14-11, 2-2 MIAA) error to score two runs.
Alex Zordel had an RBI single to right scoring
Britny Cushing who led off the inning with a single to left.
Lauren Himpel scored on a wild pitch by Bearcat starter Jenna Creger (6-7). In the three-run fifth inning, Washburn again took advantage of Bearcat miscues.
Ashley Podschun reached to lead off the inning on an infield error and moved to second on a wild pitch.
Lauren Himpel reached on a throwing error by the shortstop. Himpel then stole second base.

Lauren Mersman who pinch ran for Zordel who singled in the inning. Washburn wrapped up the scoring in the sixth on a 2 RBI double by Horejsi scoring Podschun and
Lauren Himpel.
Kayla Long (7-8) picked up the win in the complete-game win. She struck out three allowing the two earned runs. Horejsi finished 3 for 4 with 4 RBI and Zordel also finished with three hits.
In the second game of the twinbill, the teams combined for 33 hits and 22 runs in a 13-8 Lady Blue victory. Washburn tied a school record with seven doubles, which were hit by six different Lady Blues in the win. Washburn pounded out a season-high 22 hits, two off the school record of 24 set in 1993 against Avila. Washburn trailed 6-0 after 1 1/2 innings after the Bearcats chased Lady Blues starter
Kelsie Novotny after 2/3 of an inning. Washburn then rallied to score seven runs in the second inning to take the 7-6 lead before the Bearcats added two more in the fourth to take an 8-7 lead, but Washburn took the lead for good with four more in the fourth inning and two more in the sixth in the 13-8 win. Washburn tied a school record with seven doubles, two of them were recorded by
Tish Williams who finished the game 4 for 5 with 1 RBI and two runs scored.
Lindsey Himpel,
Lindsey Moore and
Ashley Podschun each had three hits while Moore added 3 RBI including hitting her third home run of the season. Every position player in the Lady Blues line up scored at least one run.
Kayla Long picked up her second win of the day pitching 3 1/3 innings and
Samantha Farris pitched three innings for her first save of the season.
