TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Lady Blues picked up an MIAA doubleheader sweep over Pittsburg State taking game one 2-0 and winning the second game 6-2. Washburn will be back in action on Saturday at 2 p.m. when they will play host to Missouri Southern honoring five Lady Blues seniors before the first game.
In the opener, Washburn scored both its runs in the first inning as
Tish Williams hit her 10th home run of the season on a 2-2 pitch to left field.
Jacque Horejsi drove in
Lindsey Himpel in the inning after Himpel singled in the inning. Washburn's
Kayla Long (9-9) allowed only two hits in the game while tossing 73 pitches in the game recording a strikeout. PSU's Melissa Slayden struck out 10 Lady Blues batters. Horejsi,
Lindsey Himpel and
Lindsey Moore each had two hits for Washburn.
In the second game, the Gorillas scored one in the first to take an early lead, but Washburn scored two in the bottom of the frame. Washburn scored its first run on an RBI sac fly by Horejsi and added another when
Britny Cushing singled to deep shortstop scoring
Ashley Podschun. In the third inning,
Alex Zordel doubled down the left field line scoring
Lauren Himpel. In the fourth, Washburn cut the lead to 3-2, but Washburn put the game away with two more in the in fourth and one more in the sixth to take the 6-2 win. In the fourth, Horejsi singled to pick up an RBI and Washburn added another on a PSU throwing error. Horejsi added another RBI with a double in the sixth.
Samantha Farris (3-3) picked up the complete-game win scattering 10 hits.
Lauren Himpel finished with 3 for 3 and Cushing, Horejsi,
Lindsey Himpel and
Tish Williams each had two hits. Horejsi finished with 3 RBI.
