Lady Blues split with Fort Hays State in MIAA softball action

HAYS, Kan. -- The Washburn Lady Blues softball team split an MIAA doubleheader with Fort Hays State winning the first game 5-4 before dropping the nightcap 15-6 in five innings. Washburn will wrap up the regular season with a single game against Nebraska-Omaha at 1 p.m. on Sunday at the Washburn Softball Complex.

In the opener, the Lady Blues jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first scoring a pair of unearned runs as Ashley Podschun hit a double to center. In the second, Washburn stretched the lead to 3-0 on a solo home run by Alex Zordel. However the Tigers cut the lead to 3-1 with a solo run of their own in the bottom of the second. Neither team scored until the Tigers plated two runs in the bottom of the sixth to tie the score at 3-3 with one coming on an unearned run. Washburn scored two in the top of the seventh to take a 5-3 lead after Marissa Martin led off the inning with a single down the left field line and then would score on a double by Tish Williams. Williams would later score on a wild pitch. In the seventh, the Tigers led off the inning with a double. After a ground out, a sac fly cut the Lady Blues lead to 5-4 and Kayla Long (11-15) was replaced by Kelsie Novotny who picked up the save retiring the final FHSU batter. Martin finished the game with two hits to lead Washburn and Williams scored two runs. The Lady Blues were outhit 15 to 6.

In the second game, the Tigers jumped on Lady Blues starter #Kortnea Morgan (3-2) for four runs before the Lady Blues scored an out taking a 4-2 lead. Washburn scored two runs in the top of the first inning on an RBI double by Podschun scoring Lindsey Himpel who singled in the inning. She would later score on a single by Lauren Himpel. Washburn tied the score at 4-4 in the top of the second inning on a 2-RBI tirple by Podschun scoring Lindsey Himpel and Williams who recorded back to back singles. The Tigers regained the lead in the bottom of the third with a solo run and then would blow the game open with a nine-run fourth inning as they sent 12 batters to the plate. Washburn added two in the fifth to cut the lead to 15-6 on another RBI double by Podschun and an RBI single by Britny Cushing.

As of Saturday after the doubleheader with FHSU, the Lady Blues (23-22) currently sit in eighth place in the conference standings with a record of 88-11 in MIAA play. The top eight teams qualify for the MIAA postseason tournament in Kansas City next week. The Lady Blues will host Nebraska-Omaha on Sunday in a single game as the Mavericks are coming to Topeka riding a 24-game winning streak and can clinch a share of the MIAA title with a win over Washburn.
