MARYVILLE, Mo. -- The Washburn Lady Blues won their second straight match as they picked up a 2-1 double overtime win over Northwest Missouri Thursday afternoon against the Bearcats. The Lady Blues will return to action on Saturday night in Yager Stadium when they will play host to Emporia State at 6 p.m.
After a scoreless first half in which the Lady Blues (2-3-1, 2-2-0 MIAA) outshot the Bearcats 11 to 3, Washburn opened the scoring in the 58th minute as
Leah Talley scored her first goal of the season on an assist from
Tia Stovall from the right side of the box. However the Bearcats would tie the score in the 75th minute when Jordan Albright knotted the score on with the help of an assist from Kelsey Sanders.
Neither team would score the rest of the way sending the match into overtime. Washburn was the aggressors in the first overtime outshooting the Bearcats 4 to 1 in the first overtime stanza. After a scoreless first ten minutes, Stovall would connect on the golden goal of an assist from
Taylor Mayhew from the left side of the box into the right side of the net for the clincher 4:34 seconds into the second overtime.
Ashley Klone picked up the win in goal for the Lady Blues recording six saves.
Washburn outshot the Bearcats 21 to 12 in the match with
Lauren Henry leading the charge with six shots. Stovall finished with five. Ten of the 21 shots were on goal for the Lady Blues.
The match improved the Lady Blues to 8-6-23 all-time in overtime matches and it was the sixth time Washburn and Northwest Missouri had gone into extra minutes in the 15 matches played between the two teams. Washburn is now 3-0-3 against the Bearcats in overtime matches.
