Lady Blues to face No. 22 Bulldogs Thursday night; at SBU on Saturday

Setting the Scene:
The Washburn Lady Blues soccer team will face the Truman Bulldogs at home on Thursday night before hitting the road to Bolivar, Mo., to face the Southwest Baptist Bearcats. Washburn is riding a three-game winning streak after winning both matches last week 2-1 with wins over Northwest Missouri in double overtime and Emporia State last time out on Sept. 25 scoring both goals within 17 seconds of each other. Truman is 5-1-1 this season and 4-0-1 in MIAA play. Southwest Baptist is 3-3-2 and 2-2-2 in MIAA.

About Truman
Truman notes: The Bulldogs are 5-1-1 this season and 4-0-1 in conference play. The Bulldogs have not allowed a goal since Sept. 5 in a 2-1 win over Central Oklahoma - a span of five matches. The Bulldogs are ranked No. 22 in the latest NSCAA national poll.

About the coach: Mike Cannon is in his 18th season at Truman and is the most successful coach to lead the Bulldog program during its 26 years of existence. With a career record of 236-81-30 (.722), Cannon is the winningest coach in Truman women's soccer history and is ranked eighth in victories among all-time Division II coaches entering the 2010 season. During his tenure as head coach, Cannon has had seven players named to the all-American squad by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) and has landed 52 student-athletes on all-region teams with 21 first-team selections.

About the Bulldogs: The Bulldogs are led by Olivia Hayes with three goals and one assist. Beth Bystrom has two goals with two assists and Kelsey Twellman leads the team with four assists. The Bulldogs have out shot their opponents 103 to 73. In net for the Bulldogs, Jayne Grisham has a 0.60 goal against average with 20 saves and four shutouts this season.

Series history with the Bulldogs: The Bulldogs lead the all-time series 12-3-1 and have won the last six meetings. Truman has outscored the Lady Blues 30 to 12 in the 16 meetings. Washburn is 1-5-1 in matches played in Kirksville and 2-5 in matches played in Topeka. Truman has the most wins against the Lady Blues in the program's history.

Last meeting with Truman: Oct. 29, 2009 - TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Lady Blues fell 1-0 to Truman State in Yager Stadium under rainy skies. The win was the 11th in a row for the Bulldogs. The Bulldogs (13-2-2, 12-1-0 MIAA) scored the lone goal of the first half when Truman's Olivia Hayes scored her 12th goal of the season as she connected unassisted from 15 yards out into the left hand side of the net. Ashley Taylor led the lady Blues with two shot attempts with both of them coming on goal. Ashley Klone recorded two saves for Washburn. Jayne Grisham had the shutout for the Bulldogs collecting two saves. Truman outshot the Lady Blues 7 to 4 after each team attempted two shots in the first half.

Last time out for Truman: Oct. 23, 2010 - Freshman Suzanne Pelley notched her first collegiate goal, and the Truman defense continued its flawless start to MIAA play, as the Truman women's soccer squad defeated Emporia State, 1-0, on a windy day at the Truman Soccer Park. Pelley's goal hit the underside of the crossbar and dropped in from 22-yards out during the 71st minute, as the Bulldogs (5-1-1, 4-0-1 MIAA) picked up their fourth 1-0 victory of the MIAA season in five matches. Pelley was set up by sophomore Kelsey Twellman, the MIAA's assist leader with four through seven games. It was all Truman throughout the match as a strong wind blew across the field, with the Bulldogs out-shooting ESU 23-5 overall and 7-1 on net. In addition, Truman applied nearly all of the pressure in the second half by rocketing 15 attempts to just one for the Hornets (0-5-1, 0-4 MIAA). Junior Jayne Grisham pushed the Truman team shutout streak to five games (all MIAA affairs) by stopping just one Hornet attempt on goal. She also lowered her season-long goals-against average to 0.60 and posted her fourth individual shutout – best in the MIAA.
About Southwest Baptist
Southwest Baptist notes: The Bearcats are 3-3-2 overall and 2-2-2 in the MIAA. The Bearcats will not have played since a Sept. 25 win over Northwest Missouri last time out.

About the coach: Bearcat head coach Rob Podeyn is in his second season along the SBU sideline where he has coached the Bearcats to a 10-12-5 record. Podeyn led the Bearcats to a 7-9-3 record last year after coming to SBU from Northwood University (Texas), where he captured two conference titles over three years. After earning his 60th career win earlier this season, Podeyn has a career mark of 62-64-11.

About the Bearcats: The Bearcats are 3-3-2 overall and 2-2-2 in the conference and have outscored their opponents 12 to 11 this season while being outshot 135 to 87. Ashley Creason has five goals to lead the Bearcats and Brenna Lacaillade and Marene Gomez each have two scores for the Bearcats.

Series history with the Bearcats: SBU leads the all-time series 5-4-5. After dropping the first four games in the series between the schools, the Lady Blues have gone 4-1-5 in the last ten meetings against SBU. Four of the last eight matches have gone into double overtime all ending in ties.

Last meeting with Southwest Baptist: Oct. 24, 2009 -- BOLIVAR, Mo. -- The Washburn Lady Blues rallied from a 2-0 deficit as Ashley Taylor scored two goals in the second half with 58 seconds of one another as Washburn played to a 2-2 double overtime tie at Southwest Baptist. Washburn fell down 1-0 3:50 into the match as Kelly Issac scored on a penalty kick putting SBU up early. They added another goal in the 25th minute when Taylor Vick scored. Taylor's first goal came at the 49:06 mark in the second half off an assist by Lauren Henry and Taylor added a second one at the 50:04 mark on another assist by Henry. Ashley Klone had seven saves while facing 20 shots in 110 minutes of action. SBU out shot Washburn 20 to 9 including 6 to 2 in the two overtime periods. The teams combined for 25 fouls with 19 coming against Southwest Baptist.

Last time out for Southwest Baptist: Sept. 25, 2010 -- MARYVILLE, Mo. -- Trailing by a goal at two different points in the match, the SBU Bearcats completed the comeback against  the green Bearcats from Northwest Missouri State, and earn a 3-2 victory. Freshman forward Ashley Creason scored in the first half to tie the match at 1-1, her team-leading fifth goal of the year. Northwest Missouri was able to strike first on their home field, when in the 23rd minute, Kelly Obley scored unassisted for her second goal of the season. SBU tried to regain momentum, as midfielders Kelly Isaac and Lindsey Boden each had a crack at the goal, but  their shots were held on to by the Northwest keeper. The green Bearcats held the advantage in shots taken in the first half, 10-6, and were awarded nine corners in the opening forty-five minutes.
Just ten minutes into the second half, Creason struck the equalizer, from a pass from forward Brittany Ready. The tie didn't last long, however, as Northwest took four shots over the next eight minutes, the last of which scored and put the green Bearcats back on top, 2-1, in the 68th minute. Less than two minutes later, the 'Cats were awarded a corner kick, that Ready took and hooked into the goal for her first goal of the season, and tied the game at 2-2. Shortly after that, in the 71st minute, Brenna Lacaillade put SBU up for good with the second goal of her career .
Last time out for the Lady Blues:
Sept. 25, 2010 -- TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Lady Blues rallied for two late goals to beat Emporia State 2-1 on Saturday night at Yager Stadium. Washburn scored two goals in 17 seconds, a school-record, to extend their winning streak over the Hornets to 11 games. Emporia State (0-6-1, 0-5-0 MIAA) struck first with an unassisted goal from Lauren Cathey in the 34th minute. She struck the shot from 30 yards out and beat Lady Blues keeper Ashley Klone to the far post. Just when it looked like Washburn's 10-game winning streak over ESU would come to an end Markie Gallagher tied the game with a blast from 30 yards out to the far post. The Lady Blues quickly stole possession and Gallagher sent a ball through to a racing Leah Talley who beat the keeper to the near post to give Washburn the 2-1 lead. Klone made three saves in net for the Lady Blues (3-3-1, 3-2-0 MIAA), while ESU's Natalie Hoernig made two saves.

Lady Blues Soccer History:
Washburn is 74-54-23 (.560) all-time in its eighth season of competing. In MIAA play, the Lady Blues are 51-40-16 (.537). In home matches, the Lady Blues are 35-19-10 and they are 32-30-10 on the road. In matches on neutral sites, the Lady Blues are 7-5-3.
