The Washburn Ichabods hit the road for a battle with Emporia State in the first edition of the Turnpike Tussle of the 2010-11 hoops season. Washburn (8-5, 5-4 MIAA) is coming off an 82-66 win over Pittsburg State while the Hornets (9-6, 6-3 MIAA) topped Lincoln on the road 77-67. The 193-game series is the most-played by the Ichabods and has had at least one meeting each year since the 1945-46 season.

Washburn Ichabod head basketball coach
Bob Chipman is in his 32nd season at the helm of the Ichabod basketball program. For 25 years now Chipman has been the winningest coach in school history and in 2006-07 he became the second winningest coach as a member of the MIAA. Chipman is 686-283 (.710) overall and he has 445 wins since the Ichabods joined the MIAA - the most of any teams in the league since the 1991-92 season. In home games, Chipman has amassed a 402-76 (.840) record going 348-64 in Lee Arena and 54-12 in Whiting Fieldhouse. Chipman is 11th amongst all NCAA II coaches in winning percentage who have coached at least 10 seasons. Among that group, he is second in all-time coaching victories in active coaches in career victories. Among all coaches who have at least 10 years experience in DII, he is 25th in winning percentage and seventh in victories. He is the third active winningest coach in NCAA Division II and 10th in winning percentage and his 686 coaching wins is 28th all-time among all NCAA coaches at all levels. At Washburn he has led the Ichabods to 11 conference regular season titles (9 MIAA), 10 NCAA Tournament appearances and the 1987 NAIA National Championship. Chipman is 45-20 against Emporia State.
Emporia State's David Moe is 155-118 in his tenth season at ESU. He is the third-winningest coach in ESU history behind Gus Fish and Ron Slaymaker. He led ESU to appearances in the NCAA Tournament in 2004 and 2007 and winning seasons in six of the last eight years.

(Jan. 12, 2011) - TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Ichabods turned a 29-28 halftime deficit into an 82-66 win over Pittsburg State Wednesday night in Lee Arena.
After shooting 33 percent in the first half after hitting 9 of 27 shots and 1 of 12 3-point attempts, the Ichabods turned it around in the second half shooting 62 percent hitting 16 of 26 attempts including a 7 of 14 performance from behind the 3-point line.
Coming out of the break trailing by one, Washburn opened the second half on a 13-4 run with two 3-pointers and a jumper by
Jeff Reid, a 3-pointer by
De'Andre Washington and a lay up by
Logan Stutz pushing Washburn to a 41-33 lead capped by a Reid three with 16:24 to go in the game. The Gorillas cut the lead back to four twice in the stanza, the final time at 46-42 before Washburn ripped off a 20-3 run over the next five minutes wrapped up by a couple of free throws by
Nate Daniels giving Washburn a 66-45 lead. Washburn would go on to lead by as many as 23 in the half on another 3-pointer by Washington at 71-48. Pittsburg State would get no closer than 15 the rest of the way.
The Gorillas led by as many as eight in the first half at 28-20 on a jumper by Logan Jones before Washburn finished the half on the 8-1 run beginning a total run of 21-5 over the final two minutes of the first half and first four minutes of the second half.
In the opening half, both team struggled from the field as Washburn shot 33 percent and the Gorillas were 13 of 30 from the field. They improved to 44 percent in the second half finihsing the game 25 of 57 for a 44 pecent average. Washburn finished 25 of 53 for 47 percent. After shooting 9 of 18 from the free throw line the Ichabods were 15 of 25 in the second half finishing 24 of 43 for the game compared to 13 of 23 for Pitt State.
Washington led the Ichabods with his first double double of the season with game-highs of 23 points and 14 rebounds. He was 6 of 13 from the field, 3 of 7 from 3-point range and 8 of 12 from the free throw line. He also had a game-high six assists all in 34 minutes of play. Stutz finished with 21 points and six rebounds. Reid was also in double figures with 16 points hitting 3 of 7 shots from 3-point range.
Eric Ray led the Gorillas with 15 points. Andra Bailey had 13 points and JaVon McGee finished with 12.
Series history with Emporia State . . .
Saturday's meeting will be the 194th meeting between these two schools and the series and ESU leads 97-96. This is the most-played series for Washburn. The two teams started the series in 1905-06, Washburn's first recorded year of basketball, and they have met every year since the 1945-46 season. This will be the 66th straight year they have played each other at least once. Washburn is 25-30 all-time in White Auditorium since home-away records were first kept beginning in 1956-57. ESU has won the last five meetings in Emporia and seven of the last eight. Prior to that, Washburn was 14-2 in the last 16 away games. The Ichabods are 19-7 against the Hornets in Lee Arena. Washburn is 24-12 against ESU in MIAA games. Washburn is 3-0 against ESU in MIAA Postseason tournament games.
Last meeting with Emporia State . . .
(Feb. 24, 2010) EMPORIA, Kan. -- The Washburn Ichabod postseason fate now rests in the hands of the Missouri Southern-Northwest Missouri basketball game on Saturday after Ichabods fell 71-62 at Emporia State.
In the first overtime game in the series since Jan. 12, 2000, the Hornets struck first on a 3-pointer by Lamar Wilburn putting ESU up 55-52. After both teams came up empty on the ensuing possessions, ESU went to the line and WIlburn hit both charity stripes putting the Hornets up 57-52.
Virgil Philistin was fouled on a drive with 3:28 to go in the overtime period and went 1 of 2 pulling Washburn (14-13, 8-12 MIAA) within four at 57-53. After a bucket by Wilburn put ESU up 59-53, Philistin went back to the line and hit both free throws, but on the first Washburn was whistled for a foul sending ESU to the line with 3:03 remaining and Dustin Andrews hit both free throws pushing the lead back to six at 61-55.
On the 'Bods' next possession, William McNeill pulled the Ichabods within four at 61-57 with 2:36 to go in the overtime period.
Logan Stutz was whistled for a foul sending Niles to the line with 2:10 to go and connected on both free throws again putting the Hornets up by six.
De'Andre Washington cut the lead in half with a 3-pointer with 1:46 to go at 63-60, but ESU scored on their next possession putting the Hornets up five at 65-60 with 1:20 to go. ESU would hit their free throws after a foul on the Ichabods leading to the nine-point win.
In the second half, a 3-pointer by Philistin pulled the Ichabods with one at 50-49 with 1:08 to play. Following a pair of free throws by Emporia State, Washington connected on a traditional 3-point play with 46.1 seconds remaining to tie the score at 52.
On ESU's next possession, the Hornets were called for a charge as Stutz stepped in front of Tim Niles to draw a charge with 15 seconds to go. A 3-pointer at the buzzer by
Maurice Colter rimmed out sending the game to overtime with the score knotted at 52.
After trailing by as many as four in the first, the Ichabods rallied to take a 25-21 halftime lead into the break behind the shooting of Philistin who scored 11 points in the opening half on 4 of 5 shooting including 2 of 3 from 3-point range. The Ichabods and the Hornets each hit eight field goals and three 3-pointers while the Ichabods hit 6 of 10 free throws compared to 3 of 8 for Emporia State. The Ichabods also held a 17 to 13 advantage on the boards with nine coming on the offensive end leading to eight second chance points in the half.
Phlistin led the Ichabods with a career-high 22 points as he hit 7 of 10 attempts from the field including 4 of 7 3-pointers. Washington finished with his 10th double double of the season with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Stutz finished with 13 points and eight rebounds.
Wilbern scored 21 points with 10 rebounds scoring the Hornets first five points in the overtime period.
The Ichabods finished the game 21 of 61 from the field and were 3 of 10 in the extra frame while the Hornets were 23 of 46 for the game going 4 of 5 in overtime while hitting 10 of 11 free throw attempts.

The Hornets are 9-6 overall and 6-3 in MIAA play after topping Lincoln on the road on Jan. 12 in Jefferson City 77-67 snapping a two-game losing streak after falling at Pittsburg State and to Missouri Southern. Xavier Burnette leads the team in scoring with 13.9 ppg pacing four Hornets in double figure scoring along with Adam Holthaus with 12.3 ppg, Michael Tyler at 10.6 ppg and Matt Boswell with 10.1 ppg. The Hornets are averaging 70.7 ppg while allowing 70.0 ppg. They are -1.3 in rebound margin this season. From the field ESU is 369 of 809 hitting 46 percent and from 3-point range they are 101 of 298 for 34 percent. ESU has attempted 34 more free throws than its opponents hitting 222 of 314. Emporia State is 7-1 at home this season with the lone loss coming to MIssouri Southern on Jan. 5.

ESU Sports Information -- Jan. 12, 2011 - January 12, 2011 -- The Emporia State men's basketball team shot .560 and outrebounded Lincoln as they earned a 77-67 win in Jefferson City, Mo. Adam Holthaus led the way for the Hornets with 17 points and pulled down four rebounds.
ESU shot .679 in the first half as they rolled out to a 43-21 halftime lead. The ESU bench also outscored the Blue Tigers 20-3 on the night.
Matt Boswell had his second double-double of the season scoring 10 points and pulling down 10 rebounds. He also added a team high six assists on the evening. Jarvis Nichols added 13 points, eight of which came on dunks, and pulled down five rebounds.
