Ichabods to host Lincoln for 1st time since 2004 at halfway point of MIAA slate

Countdown to tip . . .
The Washburn Ichabods will wrap up the first half of the MIAA regular season while hunting for their third straight win as they play host to the Lincoln Blue Tigers (2-12, 0-10 MIAA) for the first in Lee Arena since Nov. 26, 2004 on Wednesday. The game will be the first between Washburn (9-5, 6-4 MIAA) and the Blue Tigers since a 102-70 win in St. Joseph, Mo., on Nov. 16, 2007. Washburn's coming off a 69-56 win over Emporia State whle the Blue Tigers fell 83-79 at Truman.

The Coaches . . .
Washburn Ichabod head basketball coach Bob Chipman is in his 32nd season at the helm of the Ichabod basketball program. For 25 years now Chipman has been the winningest coach in school history and in 2006-07 he became the second winningest coach as a member of the MIAA. Chipman is 687-283 (.710) overall and he has 446 wins since the Ichabods joined the MIAA - the most of any teams in the league since the 1991-92 season. In home games, Chipman has amassed a 402-76 (.840) record going 348-64 in Lee Arena and 54-12 in Whiting Fieldhouse. Chipman is 11th amongst all NCAA II coaches in winning percentage who have coached at least 10 seasons. Among that group, he is second in all-time coaching victories in active coaches in career victories. Among all coaches who have at least 10 years experience in DII, he is 25th in winning percentage and seventh in victories. He is the third active winningest coach in NCAA Division II and 10th in winning percentage and his 687 coaching wins is 28th all-time among all NCAA coaches at all levels. At Washburn he has led the Ichabods to 11 conference regular season titles (9 MIAA), 10 NCAA Tournament appearances and the 1987 NAIA National Championship. Chipman is 15-0 against Lincoln.
Lincoln head coach John Redmond is 7-34 in his second year on the Blue Tiger bench. He is a 1976 graduate of Wayne State (Neb.)
 
Last time out for the Ichabods . . .
(Jan. 15, 2011) - EMPORIA, Kan. -- The Washburn Ichabods jumped out to a 14-point lead to start the game and led from start to finish in a 69-56 win over Emporia State equaling the all-time series with 97 wins each at ESU's White Auditorium.
The Ichabods jumped out to an 18-4 lead over the Hornets in the first 9:50 of the game holding ESU to only one field goal as the Hornets hit only one of their first 11 shots. Washburn was 10 of 26 from the field in the opening stanza and 6 of 20 from 3-point range.
In the second half, the Hornets cut the lead to six with 8:22 to go in the game on a lay up by Taylor Euler, but back-to-back lay-ups by Logan Stutz pushed the lead back to 10. The Hornets cut the margin to seven twice with the final time coming with 4:27 to go at 58-51, but a bucket by Nate Daniels pushed the lead to nine and a 3-pointer by Mitch Allen pushed it back to 12 at 63-61 with 2:35 to go. Washburn stretched the lead to 14 with just over a minute left on a pair of free throws by Stutz. Stutz wrapped up the game with a dunk with 49 seconds to go sealing the 13-point win.
Stutz led the Ichabods picking up his third double double in the last four games with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Tweleve of Stutz's points came in the second half when he was 5 of 8 from the field. Jeff Reid scored 12 of his 17 points in the first half hitting 4 of 8 3-pointers and Mitch Allen scored a career-high 12 points on 4 of 6 3-pointers. De'Andre Washington scored seven points with eight rebounds and a career-high 10 assists. The 10 assissts were the most by an Ichabod since Mario Scott had 10 against Missouri Western on Jan. 2, 2008.
Xavier Burnett led the Hornets with 21 points.
The Ichabods dominated on the glass outrebounding the Hornets 44 to 26 including a 13 to 4 advantage on the offensive glass.

Series history with Lincoln . . .
Wednesday's meeting will be the 22nd in the series history and the first since Nov. 16, 2007 when the Ichabods pounded Lincoln with a 102-70 win in St. Joseph, Mo., as part of the Hillard Classic. The two teams have not played a conference game since Jan. 23, 1999 when the Ichabods won 82-66 in Jefferson City. Washburn has won the last 18 meetings in the series which began on Dec. 18, 1957 with the Blue Tigers winning 93-80. Lincoln won the next two and the teams did not meet again until Jan. 24, 1990 when the Ichabods won 98-93 on the road. Washburn has won the last 18 games in the series and the last two match ups by an average margin of 28 points.

Last meeting with Lincoln . . .
(Nov. 16, 2007) ST. JOSEPH, Mo. - Five Ichabods scored in double figures to lead Washburn to a 102-70 win over Lincoln Friday in the first night of the Missouri Western Hillyard Classic.
The Ichabods shot 54 percent in the well-ballanced team effort. They won the rebound battle 46-35.
Mario Scott was 7 of 10 to lead the 'Bods with 18 points while Darnell Kimble followed with 14 off 6-of-9 shooting. Grant Hargett and Paul Byers also cracked double digits with 12 points each and Brady Sisk added 11.
Byers, Kimble and Dei Dei each pulled in six rebounds to lead the team. Angel Santiago led Washburn with five assists and joined three other Ichabods with two steals.
A pair of free throws from Sisk gave Washburn its first double-digit lead, 25-15 at 10:20. The Ichabods continued to build the lead, using an 18-0 run to go up 37-15. Washburn went up by 30, 56-26 at halftime.
Washburn led by at least 25 throughout the second half and had its largest lead, 39 points at 90-51 at the 5:45 mark. 

About Lincoln . . .
The Blue Tigers were picked to finish last by both the media and coaches prior to the start of the MIAA season, Lincoln has gone 0-10 in conference play and 2-12 overall. They have collected wins over Illinois-Springfield and at Rockhurst - their last win on Nov. 29. Senior guard Pierre DeClue leads the team in scoring averaging 18.9 ppg. Daniel Armah is scoring 9.4 ppg with 8.2 rpg. This season the Blue Tiges are averaging 72.7 ppg while allowing 80.1 ppg. As a team Lincoln is 366 of 929 from the field hitting 39 percent of its shots while going 72 of 236 from 3-point range for a 31 percent average. Lincoln has outscored its opponents in the second half of games this season 551 to 528.

Last time out for Lincoln . . .
Lincoln Sports Information -- (Jan. 15, 2010) With the game tied midway through the second half, Truman State University (TSU) took the lead on the next possession and held on the rest of the way in defeating the Lincoln University men's basketball team, 83-79, Saturday afternoon in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) play inside Pershing Arena.
Junior guard Cedric Ridle, Jr., slashed through the lane for a layup to tie the game at 63 with just under eight minutes to play in the game. TSU (5-9, 3-7 MIAA) followed Ridle's shot with a three-pointer to regain the lead 10 seconds later and would never look back.
After the Bulldogs jumped the lead to eight, 77-69, at the 1:17 mark, Lincoln (2-12, 0-10 MIAA) refused to go away, cutting the lead back down as low at two, 81-79, with 14 seconds left following a layup by junior guard Jimmy Payton.
A pair of free throws by TSU and a missed shot by Lincoln helped preserve the four-point victory.
Lincoln opened the game strong, breaking an early tie to lead by five, 15-10, at the 14:59 mark on a jumper by junior guard Marquez Davis. Davis was on his game most of the afternoon, tallying 27 points, going 10-for-17 from the field, including four three-pointers.
A seventh tie of the first half occurred at the 6:38 mark at 25-all before TSU would turn it on, pushing their lead to their largest of the game of 10, 38-28, on a layup by Ethan Freeman with a little over three minutes before halftime. Lincoln would shave two points off the lead leaving the Bulldogs ahead, 41-33, at the break.
TSU led throughout the second half before Ridle, Jr.'s layup over 12 minutes into the second half tied the game up before the close finish favoring the Bulldogs. Ridle, Jr. was not to be outdone, as he led all-scorers with 29 points, going 11-for-18 from the field and 6-for-6 from the free throw line.
Senior point guard Pierre DeClue was held to nine points, going 4-for-16 from the field in 34 minutes on the floor, snapping a six-game streak of playing all 40 minutes in a contest.
Both teams shot around 40 percent from the field with TSU going 24-for-56 (42.9) to 30-for-72 (41.7) for Lincoln.
Forty-six three-pointers were attempted by both teams, with only 14 connecting, with Truman hitting on 8-for-26 and Lincoln 6-for-20.
Lincoln benefited from points off turnovers (16-2), while TSU took advantage when it came to points off the bench (25-12).

The Ichabods are 442-202 since joining the NCAA Division II ranks, which is the most since the 1989-90 season in the MIAA.

Home sweet home - the Ichabods In Lee Arena . . .
The Ichabods are 348-64 (.848) all-time in Lee Arena - the 27th season of play. The Ichabods recorded a school-best 28-game winning streak from Nov. 19, 1993 to Feb. 8, 1995 in Lee Arena.

Washburn will begin the second half of the MIAA regular season at Nebraska-Omaha on Jan. 22 in Sapp Fieldhouse beginning a stretch of 7 of their final 11 games on the road. Washburn will take on Northwest Missouri on Jan. 26 in Maryville before returning home to face Missouri Western on Jan. 29 and Truman on Feb. 2. Washburn will have a three-game road trip on Feb. 5 at Fort Hays State followed by games at Central Missouri on Feb. 9 and Southwest Baptist on Feb. 12 before returning home to face Missouri Southern on Feb. 17. Washburn travels to Pittsburg State on Feb. 19 before coming back to Lee Arena for Senior Night on Feb. 23 against Emporia State. Washburn will then wrap up the regular season at Lincoln on Feb. 26 in Jefferson City.
