Countdown to tip . . .
The Washburn Ichabods will look for their fourth straight win when they travel for a road game at Nebraska-Omaha on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. The Ichabods and the Mavericks each have identical 10-5 overall records with 7-4 conference marks sitting in a third place tie in the MIAA standings. Washburn is coming off a 90-71 win over Lincoln while the Mavericks topped Pittsburg State 82-79.

The Coaches . . .
Washburn Ichabod head basketball coach
Bob Chipman is in his 32nd season at the helm of the Ichabod basketball program. For 25 years now Chipman has been the winningest coach in school history and in 2006-07 he became the second winningest coach as a member of the MIAA. Chipman is 688-283 (.710) overall and he has 447 wins since the Ichabods joined the MIAA - the most of any teams in the league since the 1991-92 season. In home games, Chipman has amassed a 403-76 (.840) record going 349-64 in Lee Arena and 54-12 in Whiting Fieldhouse. Chipman is 11th amongst all NCAA II coaches in winning percentage who have coached at least 10 seasons. Among that group, he is second in all-time coaching victories in active coaches in career victories. Among all coaches who have at least 10 years experience in DII, he is 25th in winning percentage and seventh in victories. He is the third active winningest coach in NCAA Division II and 10th in winning percentage and his 688 coaching wins is 28th all-time among all NCAA coaches at all levels. At Washburn he has led the Ichabods to 11 conference regular season titles (9 MIAA), 10 NCAA Tournament appearances and the 1987 NAIA National Championship. Chipman is 4-3 against Nebraska-Omaha.
Nebraska-Omaha head coach Derrin Hansen is in his sixth season at the UNO helm recording a 101-64 overall record on the Maverick bench. Hansen served as the assistant coach at UNO from 1998-2005 before taking over for the 2005-06 season. Hansen is a 1991 graduate of Nebraska Wesleyan. He played for the Plainsmen and helped lead them to the Division III semifinal in 1987-88. He coached high school for two seasons after graduating and then spent two years at Nebraska-Kearney from 1993-95 as a graduate assistant and two years at Mid-Plains CC from 1995-98.

(Jan. 19, 2011) - TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Ichabods won their 19th straight game over the Lincoln Blue Tigers in a 90-71 win in Lee Arena on Wednseday, Jan. 19.
In the first half it was the duo of
Logan Stutz and
Jeff Reid who combined for 32 points each scoring 16 as the Ichabods took a 46-39 lead into the half. Stutz was 7 of 9 from the field and Reid was 6 of 8 from the field while hitting 4 of 6 3-point attempts. Each team shot the ball well as Washburn was 19 of 35 overall for 54 percent while Lincoln was 15 of 29 for a 52 percent average. Lincoln had its only lead of the game at 8-7 on a 3-pointer by Derek Stokes with 16:26 to go in the half before the Ichabods took the lead for good on their next possession on one of Reid's first half threes.
Washburn stretched its lead to as many as 30 two different times in the game as Washburn turned a 53-44 lead into a 30-point lead ripping off a 23-2 run over a five minute stretch of the half putting the game away.
Washburn turned up the head in the second half hitting 18 of 27 shots including 3 of 4 from 3-point range en route to a 67 percent shooting performance in the second half.
Stutz added 11 more in the frame to lead all scorers with 27 points going 12 of 15 from the field with seven rebounds. Reid had 16 points and
De'Andre Washington had 10 points with nine assists.
Pierre Declue had 18 to lead the Blue Tigers. Cedric Ridle, Jr., scored 16 and Derek Stokes had 14.
Washburn finished 37 of 62 from the field for the game hitting 60 percent of its shots while the Blue Tigers were limited to 43 percent shooting on 25 of 58 attempts. The Ichabods held a 34 to 28 advantage on the glass while turning 13 Lincoln turnovers into 23 points. Washburn also tallied 28 assists with only 10 turnovers.
Series history with Nebraska-Omaha . . .
Saturday's meeting will be the 55th in school history and Washburn holds a 34-20 all-time lead in the series. The teams split the last six meetings. The two teams have played at least once a year from 1947-48 through 1973-74, a period of 27 straight years. The series began in 1933-34 and WU won the first nine meetings. The Ichabods are 3-0 against the Mavericks in Lee Arena. Washburn has not won in Omaha since Dec. 6, 1986 in a 69-62 double overtime win. Since the 1956-57 season, Washburn is 8-11 in Omaha.
Last meeting with Nebraska-Omaha . . .
(Dec. 1, 2010) TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Ichabods jumped out to a 11-2 lead to start the game and rallied to regain the lead from a Nebraska-Omaha comeback taking a 79-73 win over the Mavericks in their MIAA opener in Lee Arena.
The Ichabods (4-1, 1-0 MIAA) jumped out to the early lead behind seven straight points from
Jeff Reid. Reid also had two assist on Washburn's next two baskets by
Logan Stutz as Washburn pushed the lead to 13-4 on a jumper by
Bryce Simons with 14:40 to play in the first half. The Ichabods stretched the lead to as many as 13 in the half at 24-21 on a 3-pointer by
De'Andre Washington with 9:22 to go in the half. However the Mavericks (3-2, 0-1 MIAA) rallied and cut the lead to four with 1:26 to go on a Tyler Bullock jumper pulling UNO to a 30-26 deficit. A lay up by Washington with seven seconds left sent the teams to the locker room with a 32-26 lead.
In the second half Washburn improved its shooting to 15 of 27 (55 percent) as did Nebrask-Omaha improved from 10 of 27 to 15 of 26 (58 percent) including 6 of 11 from 3-point range.
Washburn stretched the lead to nine on four different times with the final time coming with 13:58 to go in the game on a jumper by Washington putting Washburn up 50-41. However a 7-0 run by UNO cut the lead to 50-48 on a 3-pointer by Mitch Albers. The teams would trade baskets and the score would eventually be tied at 65. A 3-pointer by
Nate Daniels gave the Ichabods a short-lived lead at 68-65, but UNO answered on its next possession on a 3-pointer by Jeff Martin with 2:48 to go in the game.
Washburn took the lead for good on back-to-back lay ups by Stutz at the 1:51 mark and Washington at the 1:27 mark. UNO did cut the lead to one when Torrian Harris hit one of two free throw attempts with1:04 to go but Stutz hit a pair of charity tosses with 56 seconds to go and Washington hit a pair with 38 seconds to go giving Washburn a 76-71 lead. Harris hit a lay up for UNO to cut the lead to three, but the Ichabods were three of four from the free throw line in the final 28 seconds to wrap up the win.
Stutz led the Ichabods with 24 points going 8 of 12 from the field and 8 of 9 from the free throw line. Washington had a season high 22 points with eight rebounds and seven assists. Reid finished with a career-high 19 points on 5 of 7 shooting from 3-point range and 6 of 11 attempts overall.
UNO was led by Bullock who had 30 points lead four Mavericks in double figures followed by Martin who had 18, Harris with 14 and Albers with 12.
Washburn held a 43 to 27 advantage on the glass including a 13 to 3 advantage in offensive rebounds. Washburn forced 15 UNO turnovers leading to 24 points.
About Nebraska-Omaha . . .
The Mavericks (10-5, 7-4 MIAA) have won six of their last seven games after breaking a three-game slide which began on Dec. 1 with their loss to Washburn. A win over Northwest Missouri on Dec. 11 started a six-game winning streak which was snapped with a 98-95 loss at home to Missouri Southern. Last time out they topped Pittsburg State in overtime 82-79 on a 3-pointer at the end of regulation on a 3-pointer by Alex Welhouse. Tyler Bullock leads the team in scoring at 19.3 ppg as well as 5.1 assists per game. Mitch Albers is scoring 18.0 ppg while Torrian Harris is scoring 11.6 ppg. The Mavericks are scoring 80.0 ppg while allowing 77.9 ppg this season. They are -3.6 in rebounding margin this season as well.

UNO Sports Information -- (Jan. 19, 2010) PITTSBURG, Kan. -- Sophomore forward Alex Welhouse hit the game-winning 3-pointer at the buzzer, guiding the UNO men's basketball team to an 82-79 win over PIttsburg State on Wednesday night.
Five Mavericks finished in double figures, led by senior guard Tyler Bullock, who had 17 points. Welhouse scored all 15 of his points from long range, going 5-for-9, while junior guard Mitch Albers and redshirt freshman center John Karhoff each had 14. Senior guard Torrian Harris added 12 points, and he and Karhoff each pulled down a team-best five rebounds. Bullock and Albers both dished out six assists apiece, with Albers' mark a career high.
PSU was topped by Eric Ray's 16 points, while Eric Marshall had 15 and Andra Bailey contributed 10 points with five boards. The two teams shot almost evenly, with UNO (53 percent) just ahead of the Gorillas (52 percent).
Pittsburg State opened with a 12-4 run, and the eight-point margin was its largest of the game. Bullock dropped in a 3-pointer to help UNO overtake the Gorillas for the first time all night at 13-12. Threes were the name of the game in the first half, as Welhouse's fourth triple put UNO up 27-21. Harris then had two charity shots and Albers and redshirt freshman Matt Hagerbaumer each notched a bucket to extend it to a 10-point lead. But Pittsburg State used a 13-4 run to close the half, capped by Ray, who hit a shot at the buzzer, and the Mavericks clung to a 37-36 lead heading into the locker room.
PSU came out firing after the intermission, taking a 49-39 advantage three minutes in. Albers banked in a trey, and Karhoff and Bullock both went 2-for-2 in free throw attempts, bringing it to 49-46 PSU. After a jumper by Jordan Embers increased it to a seven-point margin, UNO stormed back to tie it at 55-55 with a jump shot from Harris. The Gorillas, however, would not go down without a fight, twice taking seven-point advantages again.
Minutes later, Steffensmeier hit his first shot of the night and chipped in a pair of free throws, tying it at 72-all. Harris put the Mavs on top with an offensive rebound and putback, and after another tie, three points from Bullock put UNO back in control at 77-74. PSU's Javon McGee kept his team in the mix with three points of his own.
The Mavs retook a narrow 79-77 lead, and Ray came right back with a jumper to match the score at 79-79. With the final seven seconds ticking down, Welhouse made a heroic 3-pointer at the buzzer, giving Nebraska-Omaha an 82-79 win -- its second victory at the buzzer this season.
