Ichabods look for 5th straight win at Northwest Missouri

Countdown to tip . . .
The Washburn Ichabods look for their fifth straight win as they travel to Northwest Missouri to face the Bearcats on Wednesday in Bearcat Arena with a 7:30 p.m. tip. The Ichabods (11-5, 8-4 MIAA) sit alone in third place in the conference standings after winning at Nebraska-Omaha on Saturday 88-79. The Bearcats (4-12, 2-10 MIAA) have dropped their last five games with three losses at home during the streak.

Ichabods on Radio . . .

Four-time Kansas Sportscaster of the year Bruce Steinbrock will be the play-by-play voice of the Ichabods and former WU quarterback Mark Elliott will be the color analyst.

The Coaches . . .
Washburn Ichabod head basketball coach Bob Chipman is in his 32nd season at the helm of the Ichabod basketball program. For 25 years now Chipman has been the winningest coach in school history and in 2006-07 he became the second winningest coach as a member of the MIAA. Chipman is 689-283 (.710) overall and he has 448 wins since the Ichabods joined the MIAA - the most of any teams in the league since the 1991-92 season. In home games, Chipman has amassed a 403-76 (.840) record going 349-64 in Lee Arena and 54-12 in Whiting Fieldhouse. Chipman is 11th amongst all NCAA II coaches in winning percentage who have coached at least 10 seasons. Among that group, he is second in all-time coaching victories in active coaches in career victories. Among all coaches who have at least 10 years experience in DII, he is 25th in winning percentage and seventh in victories. He is the third active winningest coach in NCAA Division II and 10th in winning percentage and his 689 coaching wins is 28th all-time among all NCAA coaches at all levels. At Washburn he has led the Ichabods to 11 conference regular season titles (9 MIAA), 10 NCAA Tournament appearances and the 1987 NAIA National Championship. Chipman is 33-17 against Northwest Missouri.
Northwest Missouri head coach Ben McCollum is 16-27 in his second season at Northwest Missouri. He is 1-2 against Washburn. Prior to taking the Bearcat job, he spent four seasons as an assistant coach at Emporia State. 
 
Last time out for the Ichabods . . .
(Jan. 22, 2011) - OMAHA, Neb. -- The Washburn Ichabods won their fourth straight game in a 88-79 win over Nebraska-Omaha Saturday night Sapp Fieldhouse moving the Ichabods into sole possession of third place in the MIAA standings.
In the first half, the Ichabods led by as many as 10 in the opening stanza at 28-18 while taking a seven point lead at the break after a Mitch Allen connected on a 3-pointer with 31 seconds to go staking Washburn to a 43-34 lead. In the half the Ichabods finished 15 of 29 from the field hitting 52 percent of their shots. The Ichabods finished 6 of 11 from 3-point range and 7 of 11 from the free throw line. UNO was held to 46 percent shooting on 12 of 26 shooting and 4 of 9 shooting from 3-point range.
In the second half, UNO cut the lead to four at 59-55 with 10:36 to go, but an 11-2 run by the Ichabods built the lead back to 13 and UNO would not get closer than five the rest of the way after three free throws by Jeff Martin, but a free throw by Jeff Reid and a dunk by Nate Daniels ended the scoring.
Washington and Stutz finished with game-high 24 points while Washington added a double double adding a career-high 11 assists. Stutz, who entered the game leading the nation in field goal percentage, finished 8 of 12 from the field while also going 8 of 12 from the free throw line while dishing out a career high six assists. Jeff Reid scored 14 on 6 of 7 shooting.
Mitch Alberts led the Mavericks with 20 points while Tyler Bullock scored 19 and Alex Welhouse scored 15.
The Ichabods finsished 30 of 53 for the game from the field hitting 57 percent of their shots while going 15 of 24 from the field in the second half for a 63 percent.

Series history with Northwest Missouri . . .

Wednesday's meeting will be the 90th between the two schools and Washburn holds a 56-33 lead in the series. Washburn has won six of the last eight. The series dates back to the 1940-41 season and they have played each other every year since WU joined the MIAA in 1989-90. The Ichabods are 20-7 against the Bearcats in Lee Arena and have won the last four at home. Since the 1956-57 season, Washburn is 20-18 in Maryville and since joining the MIAA during the 1990-91 season, the Ichabods are 11-8. Washburn has won the last two overall in the series.

Last meeting with Northwest Missouri . . .

(Dec. 4, 2010) TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Ichabods improved to 5-1 overall and 2-0 in the MIAA with a 74-67 win over Northwest Missouri.
The Bearcats (2-4, 0-2 MIAA) jumped out to an early 5-0 lead on a 3-pointer by Shaneel Narayan before De'Andre Washington answered with a three of his own for the Ichabods' first points of the game. The Bearcats pushed the lead back to six at 15-9 before five straight Ichabod points by Bobby Chipman cut the Northwest lead to one at 15-14. The Ichabods (5-1, 2-0 MIAA) took the lead for good in the first half on a lay up by Logan Stutz capping a 13-0 run putting Washburn up 24-15 with 8:44 to play in the half. Northwest cut back into the lead to two at 33-31 with 1:40 to play on a lay up by Kyle Haake, but a lay up by Stutz and a 3-pointer at the buzzer by Washington sent Washburn into the locker room with a 38-31 halftime cushion.
Both teams hit at least half of their shots in the first half as Washburn was 13 of 24 for 54 percent and the Bearcats were 11 of 22 for 50 percent.
In the second half, Washburn pushed its lead to seven on a 3-pointer by Nate Daniels. Northwest would rally and eventually take the lead at 49-47 on a free throw by DeShaun Cooper. A 3-pointer by Virgil Philistin from the corner put Washburn back up by one, again Northwest would regain the lead at three twice with under nine minutes to play with the final time coming at 55-52 with 7:52 to play. A pair of free throws by Daniels cut the lead to one, followed by a lay up by Stutz and a 3-pointer by Daniels pushed the lead back to four with 5:19 to play. A 3-pointer by Narayan cut the lead to one at 61-60, but the Bearcats would get no closer than four the remainder of the way as Washburn won 74-67.
Stutz led the Ichabods with 25 points on 8 of 10 shooting while hitting 9 of 10 from the free throw line. Washington had 17 points and Daniels had 10. Elijah Allen led Northwest with 15 points while Narayan and Cooper each had 14 while Haake had 13.
Washburn finished 23 of 48 from the field for the game for a 48 percent average while the Bearcats were 21 of 48 for a 44 percent mark.
Washburn outrebounded the Bearcats 29 to 28. The teams combined for 15 turnovers with the Bearcats coughing the ball up nine times. Washburn had 32 of its 74 points in the paint. 

About Northwest Missouri . . .
The Bearcats are 4-14 overall and 2-10 in the MIAA having lost their last five games after falling to Emporia State 74-62 in Bearcat Arena, where the Bearcats are 4-5 this season. Northwest started the MIAA slate with five straight road games falling in all of them. DeShaun Cooper leads the team with a 15.7 ppg average and a team-high 5.4 assists per game. Elijah Allen is scoring 14.5 ppg with a team-high 7.7 rebounds per game and Shaneel Narayan is scoring 12.9 ppg. Narayan has not played or started in the last two games for the Bearcats. Overall the Bearcats are averaging 69.9 ppg while allowing 69.9 ppg. Northwest is shooting 44 percent from the field hitting 394 of 893 shots while going 35 percent from 3-point range hitting 102 of 289 3-point attempts. From the free throw line Northwest is 72 percent connecting on 228 of 316 shots.

Last time out for Northwest Missouri . . .
NWMSU Sports Information -- (Jan. 22, 2010) MARYVILLE, Mo.-Emporia State turned in its best shooting performance this season to end a two-game skid and net a 74-62 road win against Northwest Missouri State Saturday at Bearcat Arena.
The Hornets (10-8, 7-5 MIAA) made a season-high 13 three-pointers and shot a season-best 59 percent from the field (26 of 44). Robert Moores led four Emporia State players in double figures with 16 points. Xavier Burnette and Michael Tyler added 15 points each and Taylor Euler had 11. Together they combined for 12 three-pointers.
DeShaun Cooper led the Bearcats (4-12, 2-10) with 23 points - his fourth 20-point effort in the last six games. Kyle Haake made all five 3-pointers he took and finished with a career-high 19 points. Arunas Simanavicius had six points, seven rebounds and five assists.
Haake hit four treys in the first half to propel Northwest to a 34-31 halftime lead. Moores countered with four 3-pointers in the second half for Emporia State. The Hornets committed two second-half turnovers and outscored the Bearcats 43-28 in the frame.
Tyler scored eight points during an 18-8 run that gave Emporia State a 64-53 lead with seven minutes remaining. There had been seven ties and 10 lead changes prior to that point.
Northwest got within six, 65-59, with 4:36 remaining but Euler hit a three out of an Emporia State timeout and Tyler followed with a layup after the media timeout that pushed the lead back to 11.

The Ichabods are 349-64 (.848) all-time in Lee Arena - the 27th season of play. The Ichabods recorded a school-best 28-game winning streak from Nov. 19, 1993 to Feb. 8, 1995 in Lee Arena.

Washburn will have a three-game road trip on Feb. 5 at Fort Hays State followed by games at Central Missouri on Feb. 9 and Southwest Baptist on Feb. 12 before returning home to face Missouri Southern on Feb. 17. Washburn travels to Pittsburg State on Feb. 19 before coming back to Lee Arena for Senior Night on Feb. 23 against Emporia State. Washburn will then wrap up the regular season at Lincoln on Feb. 26 in Jefferson City.
