Ichabods return home to face Griffons

Countdown to tip . . .
The Washburn Ichabods return home for a brief two-game home stand as they will face Missouri Western on Saturday, Jan. 29 looking for their sixth-straight win. The Ichabods (12-5, 9-4 MIAA) are in third place in the MIAA standings. Missouri Western (9-8, 7-5 MIAA) is in fourth place 1 1/2 games behind the Ichabods in the conference race. Washburn won at Northwest Missouri last time out 71-55 while the Griffons defeated Emporia State 74-68. The Griffons won the first meeting between the two teams 103-82 in St. Joseph on Dec. 19. Since then the Ichabods have won seven of their last eight games.

The Coaches . . .
Washburn Ichabod head basketball coach Bob Chipman is in his 32nd season at the helm of the Ichabod basketball program. For 25 years now Chipman has been the winningest coach in school history and in 2006-07 he became the second winningest coach as a member of the MIAA. Chipman is 690-283 (.710) overall and he has 449 wins since the Ichabods joined the MIAA - the most of any teams in the league since the 1991-92 season. In home games, Chipman has amassed a 403-76 (.840) record going 349-64 in Lee Arena and 54-12 in Whiting Fieldhouse. Chipman is 11th amongst all NCAA II coaches in winning percentage who have coached at least 10 seasons. Among that group, he is second in all-time coaching victories in active coaches in career victories. Among all coaches who have at least 10 years experience in DII, he is 25th in winning percentage and seventh in victories. He is the third active winningest coach in NCAA Division II and 10th in winning percentage and his 690 coaching wins is 28th all-time among all NCAA coaches at all levels. At Washburn he has led the Ichabods to 11 conference regular season titles (9 MIAA), 10 NCAA Tournament appearances and the 1987 NAIA National Championship. Chipman is 37-29 against Missouri Western.
Missouri Western head coach Tom Smith is in his 23rd season at Missouri Western and his 36th season overall as a collegiate head coach in this season. He is 425-237 overall on the Griffon bench and 595-421 overall. 
 
Last time out for the Ichabods . . .
(Jan. 26, 2011) - MARYVILLE, Mo. -- The Washburn Ichabods won their fifth straight game sweeping the season season with Northwest Missouri in a 71-55 win over the Bearcats in Bearcat Arena on Wednesday night.
The Ichabods led 30-26 at the break after shooting 50 percent in the half hitting 11 of 22 points going 4 of 9 from 3-point range. The Ichabods were out rebounded on the glass 14 to 8 collecting only one offensive rebound. The Ichabods led by nine at 24-15 with 9:43 to play in the opening half on a 3-pointer by Jeff Reid.
The Ichabods built the lead back to seven at 39-32 prior to a Bearcat timeout with 15:21 to go in the game after Northwest's Elijah Allen tipped in a Logan Stutz miss crediting the basket to Stutz. Following a 3-pointer by De'Andre Washington with 11:12 to go in the game the Ichabod lead was stretched to 17 at 49-32 while continuing the run in the second half at 19-6.
Washburn would stretch the lead to as many as 20 with 5:54 to go in the game before the Bearcats would cut the lead to 65-55 with 2:10 to go before Reid scored six straight points to push it back to 14 and drew a charge on the Bearcats' next possession with 1:35 to go in the game.
Washington led the Ichabods with 16 points while dishing out eight assists with five rebounds. Mumpfield finished with 12 points going 3 of 4 from 3-point range and Scaife tallied a career-high 10 points on 5 of 6 shooting from the field.
Elijah Allen scored 12 points and DeShaun Cooper had 10.
Washburn finished the game shooting 56 percent including a 16 of 26 performance in the second half going 5 of 9 from 3-point range.
Both teams finished with 21 rebounds collecting identical lines of eight offensive boards and 13 defensive rebounds. Washburn had 19 assists and nine turnovers while Northwest had 12 assists and 15 turnovers.

Series history with Missouri Western . . .
Saturday's meeting will be the 79th meeting between the two schools with Washburn leading the series 44-34. The Ichabods are 20-19 against MWSU in MIAA games and 18-9 in Lee Arena. The Ichabods have dropped the last four games played in St. Joseph, not winning since a 77-62 victory on Jan. 27, 2007. In the MIAA Tournament the Ichabods are 3-4 against the Griffons. Since joining the MIAA, the Ichabods are 7-17 in MIAA games played in St. Joseph. Missouri Western tied the series lead WU 4-4 in overtime games with the win in Topeka last season. The Griffons have won the last three regular season meetings while the Ichabods won the MIAA tournament match up last season in the conference semifinals.
 
Last meeting with Missouri Western . . .
(Dec. 19 2010) ST. JOSEPH, Mo. -- The Washburn Ichabods fell to a hot-shooting Missouri Western team 103-82 in St. Joseph. .
In the first half, the Griffons took a 55-44 halftime lead to the locker room behind a 11 of 16 performance from 3-point range while going 71 percent from the field hitting 17 of 24 shots overall. The Ichabods were 14 of 42 overall and 5 of 17 from behind the arc. The Ichabods led 15-11 at the first media timeout at 14:59 on a lay up by Logan Stutz, but the Griffons would hit three straight 3-pointers with a fast break bucket added in to take a 22-15 lead. Washburn cut it back to five at 22-17 on another lay up by Stutz, but a 12-1 run on four 3-pointers pushed the Griffons to a 34-18 lead with 10:22 to play in the half. The Ichabods would trail by as many as 18 in the first half and would cut the lead to 11 on a 3-pointer by Nate Daniels with 41 seconds to play. Washburn had a chance to cut the lead into single-figures before the half, but Robert Sigala after picking up a steal, had his 3-pointer fall short and a follow by Stutz rimmed out.
After the break, the Ichabods cut the lead to 12 two times in the period, but the Griffons lead by as many as 24 at 94-70. Washburn cut the lead back to 16 at 96-80 on a 3-pointer by Reid but Washburn would get no closer the rest of the way.
Stutz led the Ichabods with 26 points on 11 of 17 shooting from the field. Washington and Reid each had 17 and Daniels had 10.
P'Allen Stinnett led the Griffons with 33 points on 9 of 10 shooting from the field and 7 of 8 from 3-point range. T.J. Johnson finished with 19 and Jonathan Phelps had 18.
The Griffons finished 16 of 27 from 3-point range and 30 of 46 from the field for the game. Washburn was held to 29 of 69 shooting and 6 of 22 from the field. Missouri Western was 27 of 32 from the free throw line hitting 84 percent while the Ichabods were 18 of 23 for 78 percent.
The game marked the first time since Feb. 5, 1997 the Ichabods gave up 100 points in a game. In that game it was a 105-75 loss to the Griffons. 

About Missouri Western . . .
The Griffons are 9-8 this season 7-5 in the MIAA having won four of their last five games including a 74-68 win over Emporia State at home last time out. Jonathan Phelps leads the team in scoring at 18.6 ppg starting two of their 17 games. P'Allen Stinnett is scoring 18.4 ppg, but missed the Emporia State game and the majority of the Pittsburg State game after spraining his knee. T.J. Johnson is scoring 12.6 ppg while leading the team with 6.4 rpg. The Griffons have hit 161 of 431 3-point attempts on the season. Nearly half of the team's field goal attempts have been from 3-point range (431 of 982 total). The Griffons have been outrebounded by an average of 38.2 to 33.8 per game this season. Overall the team is averaging 80.5 ppg while allowing 79.6 ppg. 

Last time out for Missouri Western . . .
MWSU Sports Information -- (Jan. 26, 2010) ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – The Missouri Western Griffons defeated the Emporia State Hornets 74-68. Jonathan Phelps led the charge with 29 points on 10-18 shooting from the field as the Griffons improve to 9-8 overall and 7-5 in MIAA play.
The two teams played even basketball for the first 8:31 of the first frame as an Adam Holthaus lay-up with 11:29 left tied the score at 17. The rest of the half belonged to the Hornets as they outscored the Griffons 22-11 taking an 11 point halftime lead at 39-28.
The Hornets dominated the points in the paint outscoring Western 16-8 and had seven more second chance points then the Griffons. ESU outrebounded Western 24-8 with seven coming on the offensive end of the floor. Phelps led Western with 18 points off 6-11 shooting from the field. The Hornets were led by Matt Boswell with 17 points on 6-9 shooting. Holthaus also pitched in 10 points in the frame.
The Griffon picked up the intensity in the second half using a 20-8 run capped off by a Adrian Thomas jumper giving Western a 47-46 lead with 13:52 to play. The Hornets responded retaking the lead and pushing it to seven after a Boswell layup with 10:48 to play.
Western held the Hornets scoreless for the next 6:24 going on a 15-0 run claiming a 64-56 lead after a TJ Johnson fast break dunk. Western hit their free throws down the stretch and used a lane violation late in the ball game to seal the victory.
The Griffons shot 44.1-percent (26-59) from the field and sank 16-22 free throws. Lavonte Douglas recorded his first double-double of his career with 14 points and 10 rebounds while DaJuan Harris chipped in 10 points on 5-8 shooting. He also recorded eight rebounds.
The Hornets fall to 10-9 overall and 7-6 in MIAA play. Boswell finished with a double-double scoring 23 points and snaring 10 rebounds while Holthaus and Xavier Burnette dumped in 16 and 10 points respectively.

The Ichabods are 449-202 since joining the NCAA Division II ranks, which is the most since the 1989-90 season in the MIAA.

Home sweet home - the Ichabods In Lee Arena . . .
The Ichabods are 349-64 (.848) all-time in Lee Arena - the 27th season of play. The Ichabods recorded a school-best 28-game winning streak from Nov. 19, 1993 to Feb. 8, 1995 in Lee Arena.
