The Washburn Ichabods will hit the road for a Saturday match up at Missouri Southern on Jan. 8 in Joplin, Mo., when they will look to snap a two-game losing streak to the Lions. Washburn (7-4, 4-3 MIAA) is coming off a 77-53 win over Southwest Baptist. The Lions (10-1, 6-1 MIAA) topped Emporia State 73-60 on the road rebounding from their first loss on the season on Jan. 2 when they fell to Pittsburg state at home.

Washburn Ichabod head basketball coach
Bob Chipman is in his 32nd season at the helm of the Ichabod basketball program. For 25 years now Chipman has been the winningest coach in school history and in 2006-07 he became the second winningest coach as a member of the MIAA. Chipman is 685-282 (.710) overall and he has 443 wins since the Ichabods joined the MIAA - the most of any teams in the league since the 1991-92 season. In home games, Chipman has amassed a 401-76 (.840) record going 347-64 in Lee Arena and 54-12 in Whiting Fieldhouse. Chipman is 11th amongst all NCAA II coaches in winning percentage who have coached at least 10 seasons. Among that group, he is second in all-time coaching victories in active coaches in career victories. Among all coaches who have at least 10 years experience in DII, he is 25th in winning percentage and seventh in victories. He is the third active winningest coach in NCAA Division II and 10th in winning percentage and his 685 coaching wins is 28th all-time among all NCAA coaches at all levels. At Washburn he has led the Ichabods to 11 conference regular season titles (9 MIAA), 10 NCAA Tournament appearances and the 1987 NAIA National Championship. Chipman is 37-19 against Missouri Southern.
Missouri Southern head coach Robert Corn has guided the Lions to 17 Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association Postseason Tournament berths (12 straight) and two trips to the NCAA Division II Tournament. The 1999-00 Division II Bulletin National Coach of the Year, he holds a career record of 337-271 (.554) at Southern, and is the winningest head coach in Lions basketball history. A 1978 graduate of Southern, he has led Southern to six 20-win seasons.

(Jan. 5, 2011) - TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Ichabods rolled to its fourth straight win over Southwest Baptist in Lee Arena holding the Bearcats to 33 points below their season average in a 77-53 win Wednesday night (Jan. 5). Washburn (7-4, 4-3 MIAA) will be in action on Saturday in Joplin, Mo., facing Missouri Southern.
In the first half the Ichabods led by as many as 19 points at 33-14 before the Bearcats would hit their second and third 3-pointers of the half on back-to-back attempts by Tomas Brock cutting the lead to eight at 34-26 capping a 12-1 Bearcat run.
Logan Stutz pushed the lead back to 10 at 36-26 with six seconds remaining on a tip in layup sending the Ichabods to the locker rooms at the break with the 10 point lead.
Washburn was 14 of 34 from the field in the first half hitting 41 percent of its shots while holding Southwest Baptist to 9 of 25 from the field and 3 of 10 from 3-point range for a 36 percent overall shooting percentage. Washburn also held a 24 to 12 advantage on the glass in the opening stanza while converting 10 offensive rebounds into 11 second chance points.
Three times in the second half SBU cut the Ichabod lead to 10 points but could not get any closer as Washburn used a 12-0 run over a six minute stretch in the half to put the game out of reach building its lead to as many as 27 in the half at 70-46 in the win.
Washburn kept the pressure on the Bearcats in the second half holding SBU to 11 of 30 from the field and 5 of 19 from 3-point range. Overall the Bearcats finished 8 of 29 from long range and they entered the game averaging 36 a game while connecting on an average of 14 per game.
The Ichabods were led by Stutz who had a game-high 19 points with his second straight double double adding 10 rebounds. De'Andrew Washington scored 14 to go with eight assists and five rebounds.
Jeff Reid had a career-high nine rebounds with five on the offensive end while adding eight points and three assists.
Nate Daniels had nine points and four steals.
Brock was the only Bearcat to reach double figures scoring 11 points.
The Ichabods dominated on the glass outrebounding the Bearcats 46 to 25 including an 18 to 6 advantage on the offensive end turning the 18 offensive rebounds into 24 second chance points. Washburn also outscored the Bearcats 40 to 22 in the paint.
Series history with Missouri Southern. . .
Saturday's meeting will be the 68th between these two schools in a series that dates back to 1968-69. Washburn leads the all-time series 44-23. Washburn is 21-11 in MIAA games against the Lions and 9-9 on the road against MSSU since joining the league in 1989-90. The Ichabods have lost four in a row on the road to the Lions with their last win coming in Joplin on Jan. 21, 2006 in a 60-56 win. The two teams have met at least once a year since 1976-77. WU coach

(Feb. 17, 2010) JOPLIN, Mo. -- A 21-6 run by Missouri Southern was too much for the Washburn to overcome as the Lions topped the Ichabods 77-54 in the Leggett & Platt Center in Joplin, Mo.
The Ichabods (13-12, 7-11 MIAA) were limited to 34 percent shooting from the field as they hit 11 of 32 attempts and 1 of 5 3-point attempts. The Lions (15-9, 9-8 MIAA) hit 56 percent of their shots going 15 of 27 including a 7 of 12 performance from behind the 3-point line as the Lions took a 40-26 lead into the halftime locker room.
The second half saw the Lions increase the lead to as many as 23 with 6:41 to play in the stanza before taking the 23-point win.
Logan Stutz led the Ichabods with 16 points on 8 of 10 shooting from the field. William McNeill scored 13 and
De'Andre Washington scored nine - all coming in the second half.
Skyler Bowlin led the Lions with 23 points with 17 points coming in the first half as he hit five 3-pointers. He finished the game 7 of 10 from the field hitting 5 of 7 3-point attempts.
Washburn finished the game 19 of 56 from the field while the Lions were 25 of 51. The Lions hit eight 3-pointers compared to two for the Ichabods.
Washburn was outrebounded 36 to 32. The Ichabods also committed 17 turnovers leading to 26 points for the Lions.

The Lions are 10-1 overall and 6-1 in the MIAA after beating Emporia State 73-60 last time out. The Lions were ranked as high as No. 19 in the NABC top 25 poll before falling to Pittsburg State at home on Jan. 2 at home. Skyler Bowlin leads the Lions in scoring at 19.5 ppg while averaging 21.3 ppg in MIAA play. Jason Adams is scoring 18.6 ppg and Keane Thomann is scoring 13.1 ppg. Thomann is also averaging 8.3 rebounds per game. The Lions are shooting 49.5 percent from the field hitting 323 of 652 shots while going 63 of 171 from 3-point range connecting in 37 percent of their attempts. From the free throw line the Lions are 185 of 267 hitting 69 percent of their shots. The Lions are scoring 81.3 ppg while allowing 65.5 ppg. The Lions are also averaging 11 steals per game while forcing 21 turnovers per game.

MSSU Sports Information -- Jan. 5, 2011 - Emporia, Kan. -- The Missouri Southern men's basketball team dominated the final eight minutes of the game and overcame a slow start to win 73-60 at Emporia State tonight in White Auditorium.
Southern (10-1, 6-1 MIAA) held the Hornets to their second-lowest point output of the season and are tied with Fort Hays for first place in the MIAA as the Tigers defeated Central Missouri tonight.
The Lions were led offensively by Skyler Bowlin with 25 points on 4-8 from long range and 9-11 from the free-throw line. Jason Adams and Keane Thomann both threw down double-double's with Adams scoring 17 and pulling down 11 boards, while Thomann scored 16 with 10 rebounds.
ESU (8-5, 5-2 MIAA) had three in double-figures led by 13 points from Xavier Burnette.
The Hornets opened up an early 7-0 lead to start the game against the Lions, but a three from Adams and a jumper from Thomann cut the ESU lead to just two at the 15:27 mark. Southern got to within one (18-17) at the nine-minute mark after a basket from Patrick Hester, but the Hornets went on a 7-0 run before a pair of free-throws from Thomann stopped the run.
The ESU lead was eight (29-21) with 3:17 to go before the Lions went to work and a 9-0 run capped off with a three from Bowlin with 44 seconds left, giving the Lions a 30-29 lead. The Hornets, however, got a three on the next trip down and went into the locker room, up 32-30 at the break.
After trailing by as many as eight (40-32) in the second half, Southern fought back and went on a 16-4 run to lead 48-44 with 10:40 left, forcing an ESU timeout. A free-throw from ESU's Matt Boswell gave the Hornets a 49-48 lead with 8:52 left, but the Lions took the lead for good after a layup from Thomann gave Southern a 52-50 lead with 8:14 to go. The Lions' lead reached ten (67-57) after a pair of freebies from Bowlin with 2:24 to go and a dunk from Adams with 51 seconds left gave the Lions the 13-point win.
After shooting just 29 percent in the first half, Southern shot 61 percent in the second half. Coming into the game, the Lions were near the bottom of the MIAA in free-throw shooting, but the Lions were 20-22 from the charity stripe for a 90 percent clip. The Lions totally dominated Emporia in the paint tonight, out scoring the Hornets 34-18, but out rebounding ESU 45-21, including 16-4 on the offensive boards.
