TOPEKA, Kan. - The Lady Blues were down 2-0 to No. 20 Angelo State but won the next three sets for a five-set (19-25, 26-28, 25-18, 25-23, 15-11) win in the final match of the Ramada Inn Lady Blues Fall Classic Saturday in Lee Arena.
No. 5 Washburn (16-1) also picked up a win, 3-0 (26-24, 25-16, 25-14) over Tarleton State in an earlier match Saturday.
Breanna Lewis had 39 kills in the two matches and she led the tournament field with a .394 attack percentage. She was third among players from the 10 schools with 3.79 kills a set. Lewis was voted tournament MVP on the Lady Blues Fall Classic all-tournament team, as voted by the coaches.
Lewis had a career-high 26 kills against the Rambelles, also a season-high for WU this year. She had 49 attacks and hit .388 with five digs.
Despite the Lady Blues dropping the opening set by six points, Lewis had eight kills. She had six in the fourth set and then three in the fifth set, including Washburn's 13th and 14th point that put Washburn up, 14-11.
Angelo State then got a block, one of 12 it got on the night and then an ASU service error won the dramatic match for Washburn.
Jessica Fey added 16 kills for Washburn and 11 digs for her first double-double of the year and second of her career.
Five players earned double-figure digs on the Washburn defense. Kesley Lewis led with 23 and
Hillary Hughes had 20.
Korie Thompson had 15,
Abby Wittman had 13. Hughes was also named to the all-tournament team.
Wittman had 38 assists and
Amanda Guess had 27. The Washburn offense just edged the Rambelles with a .187 attack percentage to their .183 effort. Washburn edged them in kills, 75-65.
Washburn fell behind quickly in the first set, 6-2 and never got within four after that. The second set saw six ties and the Lady Blues never lost the lead until they had set point at 24-23. There were three ties after that before ASU scored two straight for the win.
The Lady Blues took control of the third set after a 10-10 tie and they never looked back. A Kill from Thompson and then two straight ASU errors gave Washburn a 22-15 lead. Angelo State scored three more times before Brianna Lewis got Washburn to set point. Another ASU error won it for Washburn.
The fourth set was tied at 17-17 before Washburn pulled away and then in the fifth set the Lady Blues led for good after a 6-6 tie.
Breanna Lewis got a kill off an ASU blocking error at 13-10 and then she got her final of the night to force match point. ASU served an error to give Washburn the win.
Against Tarleton,
Breanna Lewis led with 13 kills and hit .500 in the three-set match. She had eight kills in Washburn's second set including three straight that were part of a 7-0 run that gave the Lady Blues a 21-12 lead.
Marissa Cox led with four blocks.
