The Lady Blues will play their final regular season home match on Thursday when they will play host to Emporia State in MIAA action on senior night in Yager Stadium. Prior to the start of the match, seniors
Lauren Henry and
Kelsey Raiman will be honored. Following the match with the Hornets, Washburn will take on Nebraska Omaha on Oct. 22.
Story lines
• The Lady Blues sit in sixth place in the MIAA standings with four points and the top six squads will qualify for the MIAA tournament in Kansas City beginning on Nov. 6. Washburn has two MIAA matches remaining against teams who are currently below them in the standings with ESU, who has three points and Missouri Western who has no points so far.
• Senior
Lauren Henry will be playing her 72nd career match against Emporia State, she is fourth in school history in shots attempted (124), fifth in shots on goal (54), sixth in goals scored (14) and seventh in points (33).
• Senior
Kelsey Raiman has started all 52 matches she has played in at Washburn at a defender's position after redshirting as a freshman. She has attempted seven shots with two shots coming on goal. She is 16th on the Washburn chart in matches started and 24th in matches played.
• Washburn has been shutout in nine matches this season snapping the school record for most times shutout in a season of seven set four times.
About Emporia State
Hornet notes:
The Hornets are 2-7-4 this season and 1-4-0 in conference play. ESU lost last time out to Truman 1-0.
About the coach:
Bryan Sailer is 2-7-4 in his first season at Emporia State. Prior to coming to ESU he led Barton County Community College to a 59-23-2 overall record in four seasons. He led them to the KJCAA Championships during the 2008 season. As a coach between high school and junior college he compiled a record of 244-68-12 over 18 seasons.
About the Hornets:
The Hornets are 2-7-4 this season. They are led by Caite Hyde who has three of the teams' 12 goals this season. In net, Nikki Schmitz has a 0.75 goal against average in 959 minutes of play allowing eight goals with 83 saves.
Series history with the Hornets: Thursday's meeting will be the 18th in the series with the Lady Blues leading the all-time series 12-4-1. Washburn has won 12 of the last 13 having its 12-game winning streak snapped in the last meeting on Sept. 22 in Emporia in a non-conference match up.

October 16, 2011 -- The Emporia State soccer team fell 1-0 for the second straight Sunday against one of the top two teams in the MIAA. The Hornets got six shots three of which came on goal against the Bulldogs. Truman got their goal in the 34th minute as Trisha Shoemaker dribbled the ball from just past midfield for the unassisted tally. Senior Jessica Decker had one of the three Hornet shots on goal as did Jordan Foutch and Mallory Walden. Nikki Schmitz had eight saves on the afternoon as she has allowed one goal or less this season eight times. Seniors Kat Goscha, Jessica Decker, Holli Schletzbaum and Sarah Anderson were honored prior to the match.
Last meeting with Emporia State:
(Sept. 22, 2011) – EMPORIA, Kan. -
Caysie Beetley put four shots on goal but Emporia State scored the only goal of the game late in the second half in a 1-0 win over Washburn Thursday night. Washburn fell to 1-6-1 overall in the non-conference match up.
Beetley put two shots on net early in the second period but Hornet goalkeeper Nikki Schmitz saved them both. She ended up saving all eight of Washburn's shots on goal.
The Hornets got the game-winner in the 85th minute when Catie Hyde scored her first of the year off an assist from Shannon Thomas.
Mallorie Monhollon made seven saves in goal for the Lady Blues playing all 90 minutes.
ESU edged Washburn in shots, 13-12 and corner kicks, 4-3. The Hornets won their first match and improved to 1-3-3.
About Nebraska Omaha
Maverick notes:
The Mavericks will be playing their third and final home match of the season against Washburn on Saturday on senior day for UNO, who will take on Western Illinois on Thursday prior to the Washburn match. UNO is 3-6-2 this season while playing mainly an NCAA Division I schedule. The Mavericks topped Central Oklahoma 2-0 for their first win of the season and North Dakota 2-1 for their second win.
About the coach:
Don Klosterman is in his 13th year as the head coach of the UNO Mavericks. The only head coach in the program's history, Klosterman has a 196-58-12 record, just four wins from number 200 in his career at UNO. The two-time national coach of the year has led the Mavericks to the Division II national semifinal four times, culminating in the 2005 NCAA Division II national championship. Under Klosterman, the Mavericks are 19-7 all-time in NCAA Division II tournament play and have won six conference titles. Klosterman formerly served as the head men's soccer coach at Benedictine College (1979-83) and Creighton (1984-86). He graduated from Benedictine in 1974.
About the Mavericks:
Katie Pickinpaugh leads the team with three goals. Katelyn Tschida has allowed 22 goals in net with 49 saves for a 1.97 goal against average.

(Oct. 16, 2010) TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Lady Blues were shutout by Nebraska-Omaha 3-0 on Saturday night in Yager Stadium. Washburn trailed at the half 1-0 after UNO's Hilary Horvatic scored unassisted from 21 yards out on a shot from the right side into the far left corner of the goal in the 19th minute staking the Mavericks to an early lead. Neither team was able to score in the first 35 minutes of the second half until UNO's Danielle Archuleta scored the first of her two second half goals in the 80th minute on an assist from Maggie Olson. Olson had a point-blank shot which was stopped by Washburn's
Ashley Klone, but the rebound was put into the far coner of the back of the net for the 2-0 lead. Archuleta added her second goal a little over eight minutes later unassisted from 10 yards out. Lauren Fox picked up the shutout win for the Mavericks, her fourth of the season. Washburn was outshot 11 to 9 and 7 to 5 in the second half.

Last time out for the Lady Blues
(Oct. 30, 2010) – KIRKSVILLE, Mo. -- The Washburn Lady Blues soccer team had their two match winning streak snapped in a 2-0 loss to Truman on Saturday.
The Bulldogs opened the scoring in the 32nd minute on an unassisted goal by Megan Buri on her fifth goal of the season. In the second half Truman added another goal on Suzanne Pelley score in the 75th minute on her second goal of the year.
Truman outshot the Lady Blues 15 to 8 in the match and 6 to 1 in the second half when the Lady Blues were going into a strong wind.
Tia Stovall had two shots on goal and
Markie Gallagher had one. Overall Stovall had three shots.
Ashley Klone had five saves in the match.

Washburn is 77-71-28 (.560) all-time in its ninth season of competing. In MIAA play, the Lady Blues are 54-50-20 (.537). In home matches, the Lady Blues are 37-26-12 and they are 33-39-12 on the road. In matches on neutral sites, the Lady Blues are 7-6-4.
