Hillary Hughes led Washburn with 17 kills and
Korie Thompson had a double-double as the fifth-ranked Lady Blues topped No. 7 Central Missouri, 3-1 (22-25, 25-21, 25-15, 25-21) in front of 1,007 fans in Lee Arena Friday night.
The Lady Blues improved to 22-1 and moved into first place in the MIAA at 9-0. The Jennies dropped to 18-4 and 8-1 in the league. They had swept their previous 13 opponents.
Washburn improved its winning streak to 15 straight overall, 18 straight in the MIAA and 35 straight in Lee Arena.
Hughes sparked the Lady Blues to their first set win with three straight kills in the second set and then she had four kills in the fourth and deciding set.
Thompson had her first career double-double with 12 digs and a career-high 11 kills. She also had five blocks.
Jessica Fey had 10 kills and
Breanna Lewis had nine with a .333 attack percentage
Mollie Lacy led the Lady Blues above the net, getting a hand on six of Washburn's nine blocks. She moved one block away from 300 in her career. Her next block will make her the eighth member of the 1,000 kills/300 blocks club. She joined the 1,000 kills club earlier this year.
The Lady Blues hit .040 in the first set but then hit over .300 in the final three sets for a .250 attack percentage. They hit .406 in the third set with 16 kills and just three errors.
The Jennies hit .185 in the match and were led by Taylor Goodness and Paula Harris with 13 kills each.
Hughes' three straight kills in the second set made the score 10-10. After two UCM points, the Lady Blues went on a 5-1 run to take a 15-13 lead. The Jennies took the lead one more time before Washburn used a 3-0 run to go ahead and a 4-0 run to close the match.
Marissa Cox got a kill to start the final run and then three straight UCM errors ended the set and tied the match.
Washburn led 7-1 in the third set and quickly closed it out the take a 2-1 lead. Hughes had six kills in that set.
A 5-0 run gave Washburn a 9-5 lead in the fourth set. There were three ties after that before Fey broke a 17-17 tie.
Central Missouri got within two at 22-20 before Hughes got a kill and then
Abby Wittman got an ace to get Washburn to match point. Harris' kill kept the Jennies alive before Hughes slammed one down to end it.
Wittman ended with 40 assists, one short of the career-high 41 she had against Nebraska-Omaha last week.
Kelsey Lewis led the back row with 23 digs and Wittman had a double-double with 10.
