ST. JOSEPH, Mo. - Three Lady Blues had double-figure kills as No. 5 Washburn swept its third straight match this week and won its 18th straight overall, 3-0 (25-12, 29-27, 25-20) at Missouri Western.
Breanna Lewis led Washburn with 11 kills as the Lady Blues improved to 25-1 and 12-0 in the MIAA. Washburn will continue action Tuesday at Missouri Southern in a 7 p.m. match.
Jessica Fey and
Jessica Kopp had 10 kills each. Kopp had one error to hit .429 and Fey went error-free in a .526 performance.
Hillary Hughes just missed a double-double with 11 digs and nine kills.
Washburn hit .256 as a team and held the Griffons to .108 hitting in the match.
Abby Wittman had 24 assists and
Amanda Guess added 15.
Kelsey Lewis had 12 digs to lead the back row.
The Lady Blues hit .472 in the first set and held MWSU to just 12 points. Washburn scored six straight early on and then finished the set on a 10-2 run.
The second set was much closer. After Washburn got to set point at 24-23, a kill from Tahler Johnston tied it and then a WU error gave Missouri Western set point. Each team went on two-point runs after that before the Lady Blues scored three straight to win.
Mollie Lacy, Fey and
Breanna Lewis tallied kills in that run.
The Griffons led through much of the early portion of the third set. Tied at 12-12, Washburn went on a 5-0 run to take a 17-12 lead. The Lady Blues held the lead the rest of the way.
Johnston finished with seven kills and 10 digs. Hannah Zimmerman and Shelby Corkill finished with team-highs of eight kills each.
Washburn won its 20th straight match against the Griffons and head coach
Chris Herron improved to 20-0 against them.
