KIRKSVILLE, Mo. -- Ichabod head coach
Craig Schurig became the all-time winningest coach at Washburn as the Ichabods improved to 6-0 for the first time since WWII in a 42-14 win over Truman State. Washburn will return to action next Saturday in Yager Stadium hosting Central Oklahoma in non-conference play starting at 1 p.m.
The Ichabods opened the scoring for the game on their first drive, a 10-play, 92-yard march down the field capped by
Justin Cooper's 5-yard run. Copper finished the first half with 11 carries for 75 yards and two touchdowns.
After forcing a Bulldog punt, the Ichabods'
Dane Simoneau hit
Greg Schoenberg on a 4-yard touchdown pass wrapping up a five-play, 74-yard drive. Simoneau was 13 of 19 for 219 yards and two touchdowns in the first half.
The Ichabods stretched their lead to 21-0 on a quick-strike three-play drive as
Ronnell Garner pulled down a 72-yard pass from Simoneau on the first play of the second quarter.
On the Bulldogs' next drive, Washburn's true freshman
Calvin Kenney, who was making his first start of the season, picked off J.B. Clark setting up Cooper's second score of the half - a 6-yard run with 3:01 left in the first half.
The Bulldogs forced an Ichabod punt on their last drive of the half and on the final play of the half, Clark hit Andy Mundwiller on a 34-yard touchdown pass play as time expired.
Washburn held the Bulldogs to 109 total yards with 50 coming on their final drive of the half. Washburn recorded 344 on 36 plays.
The Ichabods took the second half kickoff and added to their lead when Simoneau hit Schoenberg for his second touchdown reception of the game - this one a 36-yard strike over the middle putting Washburn up 35-7.
Truman scored on its next drive as Clark connected with Dallas Grier on an 18-yard touchdown pass with 7:45 to play in the third quarter.
Cooper wrapped up the scoring with a 73-yard run on a one-play drive finishing the scoring with Washburn taking the 42-14 win.
Cooper led the Ichabods with a game-high 168 yards rushing and three touchdowns averaging 8.8 yards per carry. As a team the Ichabods rushed for 229 yards.
Simoneau finished 17 of 29 for 275 yards and three touchdowns and DeJuan Beard completed his first collegiate pass on a reverse option for 49 yards to
Ronnell Garner who had three catches for 139 yards and one score.
Washburn recorded 553 yards in total offense while holding the Bulldogs to 305.
The Ichabod defense recorded a school-record nine sacks for 53 yards with three coming from
Dakota Palan-Johnson, who was wearing No. 20 in honor of
Jermon Watson.
Bryce Atagi had 13 total tackles to lead the Ichabods while
Marty Pfannenstiel had 10.
Notes:
The win moved Schurig past Dick Godlove who recorded 67 wins from 1946 to 1958 on the Ichabod sidelines. With the win Washburn improved to 6-0 for the first time since Godlove's first season in 1946. Truman was also the site of Schurig's first win as the Ichabod head coach on Oct. 12, 2002 in a 26-21 win.
