Ichabods knock off No. 8 Texans in hoops action

STEPHENVILLE, Texas -- The Washburn Ichabods rallied from an 8-point halftime deficit to knock off the No. 8-ranked Tarleton State Texans on their home court in a 61-57 win. The Ichabods (2-2) will return home to face Peru State at 7 p.m. on Tuesday in their home opener.

The Ichabods trailed 28-20 to the No. 8 Texans after shooting 8 of 24 from the field while the Texans were 10 of 23 from the field. The Ichabods did lead on the boards 18 to 13 at the end of the first half.

In the second half, the Ichabods cut the lead to two at 29-27 on a lay up by Alex North and then to two again on a jumper by Jeff Reid after the teams traded buckets at 31-29. An 8-0 run by the Texans pushed the lead into double digits at 39-29 with 14:13 left in the game.

Washburn would go on a 14-4 run to tie the score at 43 after a 3-pointer by Martin Mitchell, who scored 16 of his 18 points in the second half.

The Texans would retake the elad at 44-43 on a free throw by Warren Webb, but a lay up by North put Washburn up for good as the would lead the remaining 6:59 of the game.

Washburn stretched its lead out to seven at 51-44 on a tip by Zack Riggins. A Texan 3-pointer pulled them within three with 4:14 to go. The Ichabods pulled away back to six with 1:34 to go on a pair of free throws by Mitchell and Tarleton would not get closer than four the rest of the way including a jumper at the buzzer making the final margin four.

Mitchell led the Ichabods with 18 points while going 7 of 9 from the free throw line. Will McNeill added 12 going 8 of 9 from the free throw line and Zack Riggins also reached double figures scoring 10. Bobby Chipman finished with a game-high eight rebounds while scoring eight points hitting a pair of 3-pointers.

Zach Nelson led the Texans with 18 points off the bench.

The Ichabods heated up from their first half shooting to hit 13 of 25 shots in the second half (52 percent) while they held the Texans to 8 of 22 shooting in the frame.

Washburn finished 21 of 49 from the field (43 percent) while they held Tarleton State to 18 of 45 (40 percent). Washburn held a 34 to 28 advantage on the boards while forcing the Texans into 18 turnovers leading to 16 points.

Following the game, both Will McNeill and Martin Mitchell were named to the all-tournament team. The Texans Zach Nelson was named the MVP.
