Jessica Kopp had another big night but the Lady Blues came up short, 3-1 (25-20, 25-20, 22-25, 25-20) at sixth-ranked Central Missouri in the NCAA South Central Region final Saturday night.
No. 5 Washburn finished its season 32-3 while Central Missouri improved to 30-4 and will face Concordia St. Paul in the quarterfinal of the NCAA Volleyball Championship on December 1.
Kopp had 11 kills and four blocks and
Breanna Lewis had 10 kills to earn all-tournament honor.
Mollie Lacy had nine kills and hit .412 to also earn all-tournament honor and she finished her career with a .365 attack percentage to finish first in Washburn school history. Lewis finished her career third with a .321 percentage and they are two of only three Lady Blues to hit .300 or better in their career.
Abby Wittman had a double-double for Washburn with 29 assists and 15 digs to lead the defense.
Kelsey Lewis had 14 digs and
Hillary Hughes had 11 with eight kills. Hughes was also named to the all-tournament team, as was
Jessica Fey. She had a career day Friday before an injury in the first set Saturday kept her out of the rest of the match.
The Jennies hit .419 in the opening set and .333 in the second set to lead to victories. The Lady Blues were able to answer in the third set and avoid a sweep. Washburn went on a 5-0 run to take an 11-10 lead. There were five ties after that, the last at 22-22.
Breanna Lewis' kill gave WU the lead and then a UCM attack error got the Lady Blues to set point.
Korie Thompson's kill gave WU the set win.
Two straight kills from Thompson early in the fourth set gave Washburn a 7-3 lead but the Jennies rallied with four straight points to tie the set. Washburn built its lead back to 11-9 but the Jennies later broke a 13-13 tie and held on for good to advance out of the regional.
Allie Huffman, Paula Harris and Bradye Peniston each had 14 kills for Central Missouri. Peniston hit .583 in the match and had five blocks. Huffman added a double-double with 16 digs.
Notes: Mollie Lacy finished her Washburn career 12th with 1,220 kills, four shy of 11th...with 336 career blocks, she is one of eight Lady Blues to record 1,000 kills and 300 blocks...
Breanna Lewis finished 15th at WU with 1,091 blocks...
Amanda Guess finsihed eighth with 1,609 career assists...Lacy's .341 attack percentage this year ties her 2008 effort for fifth in school history...she ends holding four of the top six single-season attack percentages in WU history...Lewis' .341 percentage is the fourth-highest in single-season history...Washburn had its fifth straight 30-win season.
