Stevi Schultz hit a 3-pointer with five minutes remaining to pull No. 10 Washburn within a point but the Lady Blues were kept scoreless until the 1:26 mark as they fell, 53-48 at Drury Tuesday night.
The Lady Blues (6-2) will look to bounce back from two straight losses with a game Monday night at 7 against Evangel in Lee Arena.
Schultz led Washburn with 14 points, recording her fifth double-figure game in the last six, as she was 5 of 11 from the field and 3 of 7 from long range.
Cassie Lombardino also had her fifth double-figure game in the last six with 13 points off 6 of 9 shooting.
Ebonie Williams had nine points.
The Lady Blues shot well in the game, holding a 46 percent to 35 percent advantage over the Lady Panthers (2-1). Both teams gave the ball away numerous times with Washburn leading in turnovers, 26-22. Drury, playing its home opener, held a 34-28 lead in rebounds.
After Schultz' 3 that made the score 44-43, Drury, the Lady Blues were held scoreless for nearly four minutes while Drury built its lead back to eight points with Bethanie Funderburk hitting seven straight points for the Panthers. A lay-up from Lombardino broke the WU scoreless streak and then a free throw from Schultz got Washburn within five at 51-46 with 54 seconds remaining.
Funderburk was fouled with 27 seconds on the clock and her two free throws gave Drury a three-possession lead to seal the game. Funderburk and Katie Pritchard scored 15 points to lead the Panthers.
Lombardino led Washburn in the first half with nine points off 4 of 6 shooting. Williams made 3 of 6 shots for seven points in the opening 20 minutes. Overall, Washburn shot 50 percent from the field (10 of 20) in the first half and from 3-point range (3 of 6).
Turnovers in the early going on both sides of the court kept the scoring low. Both teams had 10 by the 8:12 mark and Washburn ended the half with 16 while the Lady Panthers had 13. Washburn trailed 8-2 before Lombardino's lay-up at 11:55 gave the Lady Blues a 9-8 lead. After Funderburk hit two free throws for Drury, the Lady Blues went on an 8-0 run to take a 17-10 lead with 6:46 to play.Lombardino's three-point play capped the run. Drury later scored the final four points of the half to make the score 25-23, Washburn, at halftime.
The Panthers opened the second half on an 8-0 run.
Sierra Moeller's bucket at 14:08 was the first for Washburn in the half. Washburn later led briefly by a point twice but Funderburk's 7-0 run that ended at 2:39 gave the Panthers a 51-43 lead.
Lombardino and Moeller led Washburn with seven rebounds and
Megan Lassley led with four assists.
