Ichabods to host Jets in Black Friday afternoon game; Chipman going for win #700

Starting introductions
The Washburn Ichabods will host Newman in a Black Friday afternoon contest at 1 p.m. in Lee Arena. Ichabod head coach Bob Chipman will be going for win No. 700 in his 33rd season on the Ichabod bench. Washburn is coming off a 97-72 win over Peru State last time out. The Jets (3-1) lost their first game of the season on Nov. 22 when they fell to Fort Hays State 75-65. Following the game with Newman, Washburn will travel to Nebraska Omaha to face the Mavericks on Nov. 29 at 7 p.m.

The coaches
Washburn Ichabod head basketball coach Bob Chipman is in his 33rd season at the helm of the Ichabod basketball program. Chipman is 699-290 (.707) overall and he has 458 wins since the Ichabods joined the MIAA - the most of any teams in the league since the 1991-92 season. Chipman has led the Ichabods to the MIAA Tournament 19 times collecting an all-time league-best 29 wins going 29-16 with a .675 winning percentage during tournament play. In home games, Chipman has amassed a 407-77 (.840) record going 353-65 in Lee Arena and 54-12 in Whiting Fieldhouse. Chipman is 11th amongst all NCAA II coaches in winning percentage who have coached at least 10 seasons. Among that group, he is second in all-time coaching victories in active coaches in career victories. Among all coaches who have at least 10 years experience in DII, he is 25th in winning percentage and seventh in victories. At Washburn he has led the Ichabods to 11 conference regular season titles (9 MIAA), 11 NCAA Tournament appearances and the 1987 NAIA National Championship. Chipman is 15-2 against Newman.
Newman head coach Mark Potter is in his 14th year as Newman University's Head Men's Basketball Coach where he has compiled an overall record of 243-146. Potter, a former Newman player and Assistant Coach, has compiled the highest winning percentage in Newman's basketball history. In 1998, he was chosen to resurrect the men's basketball program after an 11-year hiatus. In only the second year back, Potter led his team to an undefeated conference championship, a National Tournament berth, and a 29-6 overall record. He is 0-5 against the Ichabods.

TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Ichabods improved to 27-1 in Lee Arena home openers as they cruised to a 97-72 win over Peru State Monday night in Topeka.
Both teams shot about 54 percent in the first half as the Ichabods (3-2) took a 50-37 lead into the break. There were seven score ties and four lead changes in the first 20 minutes and the Bobcats (1-8) would lead by as many as three at 5-2, but it would be a short-lived advantage last one Ichabod possession and 18 seconds when Washburn's Will McNeill quickly tied the score on his first 3-pointer of the night. Washburn would go on to lead by as many as 13 in the first half with the largest margin coming on a lay up with 30 seconds to go by McNeill wrapping up his 13th point of the half.
In the second half, the Ichabods continued to burn the nets hitting 20 of 34 shots connecting on 59 percent of their shots overall while going 4 of 5 from 3-point range as the Ichabods stretched their lead out to as many as 27 in the final frame.
McNeill led three Ichabods in double figures scoring 21 points. Alex North scored 14 and Martin Mitchell scored 13. Bobby Chipman scored nine points while pulling down a game-high eight rebounds tying a career-high with three blocks. The Ichabods recorded 15 steals forcing 25 Bobcat turnovers. McNeill finished with a career-high seven steals to pace Washburn. All 13 Ichabods suited up for the game scored.
Derrick Williams scored 25 to lead the Bobcats. Peter Knudson scored 15 and Eric Donald scored 13 off the bench.
Washburn finished 40 of 71 from the field hitting 56 percent of their shots in the game while the Bobcats were just under 50 percent at 49 after hitting 26 of 53 shots. Washburn held a 32 to 27 advantage on the glass while recording 25 fast break points compared to four for the Bobcats.

About Newman
Newman is 3-1 this season after suffering its first loss on Tuesday to MIAA foe Fort Hays State 75-65 on the road. Eric Grant leads the Jets with 13.3 poins per game. The Jets swept a home-and-home series with former MIAA school Missouri S&T and then defeated  future MIAA foe Northeastern State 47-46 on Nov. 12.

Series history with Newman
Friday's meeting with the Jets is the 23rd all-time. The Ichabods lead the all-time series 17-5. The Ichabods have won the last 14 meetings not falling to the Jets since Feb. 12, 1980 when Newman won 68-56 in Topeka.

(Nov. 22, 2011) – Newman Sports Information - HAYS, Kan.- The Newman men's basketball team was dealt its first loss of the season, falling 75-65 to Fort Hays State Tuesday evening at Gross Coliseum in Hays, Kan. Chuck Coley all scorers with 18 points in the loss.
A barrage of three's from Omar McDade and KC Rodenburg kick-started a fast start for Fort Hays State who shot 58 percent from the field and 56 percent from deep. Newman fell behind early, as Matt Simmons scored four of the first six points for the Tigers, and also cleaned up the boards with 11 for the half. Mason Felter tried to keep the Jets within striking range by scoring six first-half points. Newman shot 26 percent (7-27) from the field, and only converted four of eight free throw attempts. Newman scratched it's way back in the second half after trailing by as many as 18 points in the first half. The Jets' full-court press proved valuable as they held Fort Hays State without a field goal for a span of five minutes in the second half, forcing 14 turnovers in the half. The momentum went Newman's way much of the second half, as they clawed to within six points after a Ryan McCarthy three-pointer with 4:22 left in the game. Ultimately, fouls proved costly throughout much of the second-half, as Fort Hays State was put on the free-throw stripe 12 times in the period. The Jets continued to battle to the final seconds, when two Tyrone Phillips's lay-ups put the game out of reach. Chuck Coley and Eric Saunders led the charge in the second half for Newman, as they poured in 18 and 17 points respectively. Chuck Coley led all scorers with 18 points. Eric Saunders added 17 points in the loss. The Jets forced 24 turnovers in the game, and gave the ball away just 14 times. Four Tigers scored in double-figures, lead by Tyrone Phillips 17 points. Mason Felter lead the Jets in the rebounding for the game with six. Newman shot 30.8 percent (20-65) for the game, and converted 18 of its 26 free-throws on the night. Fort Hays State out-rebounded Newman 42-35 in the game, and was led by Matt Simmons 14 rebounds. After a stellar first-half in which the Tigers shot 58.3 percent (14-24) from the floor, Newman held Fort Hays State to 39.1% from the field, and just 16.7% from downtown in the second half.

(Dec. 1, 2005) TOPEKA - The Washburn Ichabods won their 300th game all-time in Lee Arena in an 88-68 win over Newman. The Ichabods were led by Rashad Adams who led five Ichabods in double figures with 16 points. Kris Milburn and Brady Sisk each scored 15. Kyle Fisher scored 14 and J.B. Murray scored 13. The Ichabods shot 47 percent from the field.

Ichabod head coach Bob Chipman is looking to become the seventh member of the 700-win club for NCAA Division II coaches. Overall out of all divisions, he would become the 28th coach to reach the 700-win plateau.

Ichabod Basketball HIstory
Washburn is 1,407-976 (.590 in 2,383 games) in its 106th season of intercollegiate action. The Ichabods are the 10th-winningest team in NCAA Division II history and the 26th winningest team this decade. The Ichabods are 457-205 since joining the NCAA Division II ranks, which is the most since the 1989-90 season in the MIAA.

The Ichabods are 353-65 (.848) all-time in Lee Arena - the 28th season of play. The Ichabods recorded a school-best 28-game winning streak from Nov. 19, 1993 to Feb. 8, 1995 in Lee Arena.

Up Next
Washburn will then take on Nebraska Omaha in a non-conference game on Nov. 29 before opening the MIAA slate on Dec. 3 against Northwest Missouri in Maryville followed by a Dec. 7 game at Fort Hays State. Washburn will finally get a conference game when they will face Truman on Dec. 10 before taking a week off for finals week.
