Ichabods to face former MIAA foe Nebraska Omaha on Tuesday

Starting introductions
The Washburn Ichabods will return to the court on Tuesday, Nov. 29 to take on the Nebraska Omaha Mavericks in a non-conference tune up before opening MIAA play on Saturday at Northwest Missouri. The Ichabods (4-2) are coming off an 88-63 win over Newman while the Division I Mavericks (2-4) picked up a win last time out over Chadron State 81-78 on Saturday in their last game. The Mavericks left the MIAA in March earlier this year to join the Summit League and will play a full conference schedule at the Division I level beginning in the 2012-13 school year.

The coaches
Washburn Ichabod head basketball coach Bob Chipman is in his 33rd season at the helm of the Ichabod basketball program. Chipman is 700-290 (.707) overall and he has 459 wins since the Ichabods joined the MIAA - the most of any teams in the league since the 1991-92 season. Chipman has led the Ichabods to the MIAA Tournament 19 times collecting an all-time league-best 29 wins going 29-16 with a .675 winning percentage during tournament play. In home games, Chipman has amassed a 408-77 (.840) record going 353-65 in Lee Arena and 54-12 in Whiting Fieldhouse. Chipman is 11th amongst all NCAA II coaches in winning percentage who have coached at least 10 seasons. Among that group, he is second in all-time coaching victories in active coaches in career victories. Among all coaches who have at least 10 years experience in DII, he is 25th in winning percentage and seventh in victories. At Washburn he has led the Ichabods to 11 conference regular season titles (9 MIAA), 11 NCAA Tournament appearances and the 1987 NAIA National Championship. Chipman is 5-3 against the Mavericks.
Mavericks head coach Derrin Hansen is in his seventh season at the helm of the UNO men's basketball program in 2011-12, having taken the job after serving as an assistant coach for seven years with former Maverick head coaches Kevin McKenna and Kevin Lehman. Hansen boasts a career record of 113-76 over the first six-plus years of his head coaching career and hit the century mark on Jan. 12, 2011. He has the second-most victories of any coach in program history, behind only Bob Hanson, who amassed a record of 382-313 from 1969 to 1994.

TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Ichabods led from start to finish as head coach Bob Chipman got his 700th career victory, all at Washburn, in an 88-63 win over Newman Saturday afternoon at Lee Arena.
Chipman became the seventh NCAA Division II coach to reach 700 wins and the 28th in NCAA history. He's now 700-290 (.707) in his 33rd year at Washburn. He began his career in 1979-80.
Alex North shot a perfect 7 for 7 from the field and 4 of 4 from the free throw line. He hit three 3-pointers and ended with 21 points. He added 10 rebounds for a double-double. Will McNeill went 10 for 15 from the field for 22 points and he added five assists.
Martin Mitchell also had five assists and he reached double figures with 10 points. North and Bobby Chipman each had four assists.
The Ichabods shot 52 percent from the field and 54 percent from 3-point range. The Jets (3-2) were 35 percent from the field and 29 percent from long range. Both teams grabbed an even 38 rebounds and WU committed 10 turnovers while Newman had 17.
Kyle Wiggins' free throw at the 9:04 mark of the first half gave Washburn a 10-point lead for the first time. The Ichabods later closed the half on a 14-2 run to take a 26-point lead, 44-18, in to the locker room. McNeill started that stretch with five straight points and Christian Ulsaker scored four of his five points during that stretch.
McNeill's jumper in the paint at 17:46 of the second half pushed Washburn's lead to a game-high 30 points at 50-20.
A 7-0 run later pulled the Jets within 22 but Washburn answered with seven straight to put the Bods back up buy 29, 59-30 with 10:49 to play. The Jets were able to cut it to 20 in the final 1:25 but Ichabods Jared Henry and Dejaun Lofton hit 3s near the end and the Ichabods went on to match the 25-point win they had Tuesday against Peru State to tie the season high.
Eric Saunders led Newman with 13 points and Darrell Traylor and Chuck Colley each had 11. Coley led the Jets with seven rebounds.  

About Nebraska Omaha
The Mavericks are 2-4 this season after picking up an 81-78 win over Chadron State last time out on Saturday. The win snapped a three-game losing streak. Mitch Albers leads the team in scoring with 20.8 ppg while John Karhoff is scoirng 14.8 ppg and C.J. Carter is scoring 11.7 ppg. UNO has been averaging 78.8 ppg this season while allowing 81.2 ppg. UNO is 2-0 in home games this season dropping all four road contests.
 
Series history with Nebraska Omaha
Tuesday's meeting will be the 56th in school history and Washburn holds a 35-20 all-time lead in the series. The teams split the last six meetings and the Ichabods swept the two regular season meetings last year. The two teams have played at least once a year from 1947-48 through 1973-74, a period of 27 straight years. The series began in 1933-34 and WU won the first nine meetings. The Ichabods are 3-0 against the Mavericks in Lee Arena.  Washburn picked up its first win in Omaha in the last meeting on Jan. 22, 2011 in an 88-79 win - the Ichabods' first win in Omaha since Dec. 6, 1986 in a 69-62 double overtime win. Since the 1956-57 season, Washburn is 9-11 in Omaha.

(Nov. 26, 2011) – UNO Sports Information - OMAHA, Neb. – Behind a heroic game-winning shot from sophomore guard Caleb Steffensmeier, the UNO men's basketball team picked up its second win of the year on Saturday afternoon, defeating Chadron State 81-78 at Sapp Fieldhouse.
With the score tied 78-78 with 5.8 seconds to go, the ball was inbounded to Steffensmeier, who made a buzzer-beating 3-pointer from approximately 28 feet out to win the game. The Creighton Prep product finished with a career-high-tying 12 points, as well as a career-best seven assists, two rebounds and a steal.
Senior guard Mitch Albers led the scoring with 20 points and tacked on four rebounds, five assists and a pair of steals. Sophomore center John Karhoff added a career-high 19 points on 9-for-12 shooting from the field, as well as six rebounds and a career-best-matching two blocks. Freshman guard CJ Carter also finished in double figures with 12 points, along with five boards, five assists, two blocks and two steals.
Junior Bill Freeman pulled down a team-leading seven rebounds and added six points, three assists and a steal off the bench, while junior forward Alex Welhouse had six boards, four points and two helpers.
As a team, Nebraska Omaha shot 54.7 percent (35-for-64) from the floor to Chadron State's 37.5 percent (21-for-56). The Eagles had a strong effort from both behind the arc -- 11-for-24 for 45.8 percent – and at the free throw line – 25-for-30 for 83.3 percent.
CSC was topped by Kevin McClelland's 21 points and a game-leading trio of 3-pointers, as well as an 8-for-8 performance from the charity stripe. McClellland added five rebounds, four assists, three steals and a block, all of which led his squad. Two other Eagles – Moala Tautuaa (14) and Chris Curtis (11) – finished with double-figure scoring efforts.
Tim McDavid got Chadron State on the board first with a 3-pointer, but back-to-back layups by Steffensmeier and Albers put UNO up 4-3. A trey by McClelland then put CSC ahead 6-4, and the Eagles never relinquished the lead for the remainder of the first half. Though the Mavericks brought it within one on three occasions, Chadron State went up by as much as 12 at 5:36 on a pair of free throws from Kyle Vinich. Nebraska Omaha then cut it to 36-30 with a layup from Freeman, but a 3-pointer by Sammy Hines in the final minute put CSC back up by 10. Albers managed one more score for UNO, a layup with one second left, making it 46-38 by halftime.
Karhoff turned it up in the second half, accounting for five rebounds and 13 points on 6-for-7 shooting from the field. After Chadron State took its largest lead of the game at 53-40, the Mavericks chipped away to regain control. A 12-0 UNO run was capped by back-to-back Karhoff baskets and a layup from Steffensmeier to make it 60-57 before CSC tied it at 60-all on a 3-pointer by McClelland.
Freeman then dropped in back-to-back shots, putting the Mavs ahead 64-62, but a free throw by Christian McGhee and Aldor Kola's trey pushed it to 66-64 for Chadron State. Carter kept UNO within two on a tip-in, and Karhoff then went to work, putting up seven straight points on his own by 73-71.
In the final seven minutes, the two teams tied the game five times to bring it to the 78-78 point. With 16 seconds left, Carter blocked an attempted shot by Hines, giving UNO the ball. With 5.8 seconds left on the clock, it went to Steffensmeier, who tossed up the 28-footer to win the game.

(Jan. 22, 2011) OMAHA, Neb. -- The Washburn Ichabods won their fourth straight game in a 88-79 win over Nebraska-Omaha Saturday night in Sapp Fieldhouse.
In the first half, the Ichabods led by as many as 10 in the opening stanza at 28-18 while taking a seven point lead at the break after a Mitch Allen connected on a 3-pointer with 31 seconds to go staking Washburn to a 43-34 lead. In the half the Ichabods finished 15 of 29 from the field hitting 52 percent of their shots. The Ichabods finished 6 of 11 from 3-point range and 7 of 11 from the free throw line. UNO was held to 46 percent shooting on 12 of 26 shooting and 4 of 9 shooting from 3-point range.
In the second half, UNO cut the lead to four at 59-55 with 10:36 to go, but an 11-2 run by the Ichabods built the lead back to 13 and UNO would not get closer than five the rest of the way after three free throws by Jeff Martin, but a free throw by Jeff Reid and a dunk by Nate Daniels ended the scoring.
Washington and Stutz finished with game-high 24 points while Washington added a double double adding a career-high 11 assists. Stutz, who entered the game leading the nation in field goal percentage, finished 8 of 12 from the field while also going 8 of 12 from the free throw line while dishing out a career high six assists. Jeff Reid scored 14 on 6 of 7 shooting. Mitch Alberts led the Mavericks with 20 points while Tyler Bullock scored 19 and Alex Welhouse scored 15. The Ichabods finsished 30 of 53 for the game from the field hitting 57 percent of their shots while going 15 of 24 from the field in the second half for a 63 percent.

Ichabod head coach Bob Chipman became the seventh member of the 700-win club for NCAA Division II coaches. Overall out of all divisions, he became the 28th coach to reach the 700-win plateau. Chipman reached his 700th win in his 990th game. He reached it faster than Jim Calhoun (1,008), Don Haskins (1,029), Lou Henson (1,046), Lefty Driesell (1,048), Ray Meyer (1,051) and Norm Stewert (1,055).

Ichabod Basketball HIstory
Washburn is 1,408-976 (.590 in 2,384 games) in its 106th season of intercollegiate action. The Ichabods are the 10th-winningest team in NCAA Division II history and the 26th winningest team this decade. The Ichabods are 458-205 since joining the NCAA Division II ranks, which is the most since the 1989-90 season in the MIAA.

The Ichabods are 354-65 (.848) all-time in Lee Arena - the 28th season of play. The Ichabods recorded a school-best 28-game winning streak from Nov. 19, 1993 to Feb. 8, 1995 in Lee Arena.

Washburn will open the MIAA slate on Dec. 3 against Northwest Missouri in Maryville followed by a Dec. 7 game at Fort Hays State. Washburn will finally get a conference game when they will face Truman on Dec. 10 before taking a week off for finals returning to the court on Dec. 17 when they will play host to Missouri Western.
