Ichabods wrap up road swing with trip to face Southwest Baptist

Countdown to tip . . .
The Washburn Ichabods will wrap up a three-game road trip as they travel to Bolivar, Mo., on Saturday, Feb. 12 to face Southwest Baptist at 3:30 p.m. in the Meyer Sports Center where the Bearcats are 9-2 this season. The Ichabods are looking to become the 10th school in NCAA Division II history to reach the 1,400-win plateau as West Texas A&M picked up its milestone win on Wednesday against Abilene Christian. The Ichabods are coming of a 65-61 loss at Central Missouri while the Bearcats topped Emporia State at home on Tuesday 79-66.

The Coaches . . .
Washburn Ichabod head basketball coach Bob Chipman is in his 32nd season at the helm of the Ichabod basketball program. Chipman is the winningest coach in school history and in 2006-07 he became the second winningest coach as a member of the MIAA. Chipman is 691-285 (.710) overall and he has 450 wins since the Ichabods joined the MIAA - the most of any teams in the league since the 1991-92 season. In home games, Chipman has amassed a 404-76 (.840) record going 350-64 in Lee Arena and 54-12 in Whiting Fieldhouse. Chipman is 11th amongst all NCAA II coaches in winning percentage who have coached at least 10 seasons. Among that group, he is second in all-time coaching victories in active coaches in career victories. Among all coaches who have at least 10 years experience in DII, he is 25th in winning percentage and seventh in victories. He is the third active winningest coach in NCAA Division II and 10th in winning percentage and his 691 coaching wins is 28th all-time among all NCAA coaches at all levels. At Washburn he has led the Ichabods to 11 conference regular season titles (9 MIAA), 10 NCAA Tournament appearances and the 1987 NAIA National Championship. Chipman is 26-11 against Southwest Baptist.
Southwest Baptist head coach Jeff Guiot is 138-65 in his seventh season at Southwest Baptist. He is 356-159 in 17 years overall.
    
Last time out for the Ichabods . . .
(Feb. 9, 2011) - WARRENSBURG, Mo. -- The Washburn Ichabods were held scoreless the final 4:07 of the game while missing their final four free throws down the stretch in a 65-61 loss at Central Missouri.
Washburn (13-7, 10-6 MIAA) held a four point lead at 61-57 after a 3-pointer by De'Andre Washington. Following an Ichabod steal by Jadarren Mumpfield, Washburn went to the line after a Mule foul, but came up empty on two free throw attempts. The Mules (15-8, 10-7 MIAA) pulled within two at 61-59 after a pair of free throws by Tyrone Young with 2:24 to go. The Ichabods turned it over on their next possession and the Mules knotted the score at 61 on a lay up by Boo Hunter with 1:40 to go. A jumper by Young put Central up 63-61 with 1:01 gave the Mules the lead for good as the Ichabods missed their final three field goal attempts.
The Ichabods fell behind 7-0 to start the game before coming back to take a 32-30 lead into the halftime locker room after closing the opening half on a 15-3 run as Washington scored 12 points in the first twenty minutes.
Washington led the Ichabods with 20 points and Mumpfield finished with 11. Bobby Chipman scored 10 making his first start of the season in place of Jeff Reid who was hampered by an injury only playing three minutes.
Joel Barkers led the Mules with 16 points and Hunter finished with 14 while Reggie Stallings scored 10.
The Ichabods were 0 of 3 from the free throw line in the first half and finished 2 of 8 from the charity stripe in the loss. Central Missouri was 12 of 17 from the line in the win. From the field, Washburn was 24 of 65 for 37 percent while the Mules connected on 24 of 48 shots. The Ichabods did hit 11 3-point field goals compared to five for Central Missouri.
Series history with Southwest Baptist . . .
Saturday's meeting will be the 45th between Washburn and Southwest Baptist with the Ichabods leading the all-time series 28-15. Washburn has won 18 of the last 25 games. Washburn is 24-10 against SBU in MIAA games. The series is the least-played matchup for Washburn against other MIAA teams with 44 games played. The Ichabods have won the last four games played in Topeka and have gone 3-1 against the Bearcats in the MIAA Tournament. In Bolivar, the Ichabods are 9-11 in games played and have lost the last five played in the Meyer Sports Center not arriving back in Topeka with a win since a 90-80 win on Feb. 10, 2005.
 
Last meeting with Southwest Baptist . . .
(Jan. 5, 2011) TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Ichabods rolled to its fourth straight win over Southwest Baptist in Lee Arena holding the Bearcats to 33 points below their season average in a 77-53 win Wednesday night (Jan. 5).
In the first half the Ichabods led by as many as 19 points at 33-14 before the Bearcats would hit their second and third 3-pointers of the half on back-to-back attempts by Tomas Brock cutting the lead to eight at 34-26 capping a 12-1 Bearcat run. Logan Stutz pushed the lead back to 10 at 36-26 with six seconds remaining on a tip in layup sending the Ichabods to the locker rooms at the break with the 10 point lead.
Washburn was 14 of 34 from the field in the first half hitting 41 percent of its shots while holding Southwest Baptist to 9 of 25 from the field and 3 of 10 from 3-point range for a 36 percent overall shooting percentage. Washburn also held a 24 to 12 advantage on the glass in the opening stanza while converting 10 offensive rebounds into 11 second chance points.
Three times in the second half SBU cut the Ichabod lead to 10 points but could not get any closer as Washburn used a 12-0 run over a six minute stretch in the half to put the game out of reach building its lead to as many as 27 in the half at 70-46 in the win.
Washburn kept the pressure on the Bearcats in the second half holding SBU to 11 of 30 from the field and 5 of 19 from 3-point range. Overall the Bearcats finished 8 of 29 from long range and they entered the game averaging 36 a game while connecting on an average of 14 per game.
The Ichabods were led by Stutz who had a game-high 19 points with his second straight double double adding 10 rebounds. De'Andre Washington scored 14 to go with eight assists and five rebounds. Jeff Reid had a career-high nine rebounds with five on the offensive end while adding eight points and three assists. Nate Daniels had nine points and four steals.
Brock was the only Bearcat to reach double figures scoring 11 points.
The Ichabods dominated on the glass outrebounding the Bearcats 46 to 25 including an 18 to 6 advantage on the offensive end turning the 18 offensive rebounds into 24 second chance points. Washburn also outscored the Bearcats 40 to 22 in the paint.
About Southwest Baptist . . .
The Bearcats are 11-11, 8-8 in the MIAA this season. They are currently third in the MIAA in scoring offense averaging 80.3 points per game. They are led by Ryan Dougherty who is averaging 14.7 points and 3.9 rebounds per game. Stephen Cotten leads the team in rebounds pulling down 5.8 boards per game.

SBU Sports Information -- (Feb. 8, 2010) Bolivar, Mo. - The SBU men were able to push their home game win streak to four with a victory over Emporia State, 79-66 in Bolivar on Tuesday night.  SBU was impressive on both ends of the court, leading by as many as 22 in the second half.
The Bearcats had four players in double figures led by Ryan Dougherty who scored a game high 17 points with five rebounds, seven assists, two steals and did not commit a turnover.  Kurt Koening added 16 points -  his seventh double-digit performance in the last nine games and grabbed seven rebounds. Robson Memnon had a career high 15 points, while Stephen Cotten scored 10 points and had 6 rebounds.

The regional rankings will be released each Wednesday for the remainder of the season with the top eight teams in the final rankings on Sunday, March 6 qualifying for the South Central Regional at a campus site to be determined. Washburn is 1,399-970 (.590 in 2,369 games) in its 105th season of intercollegiate action. The Ichabods are the ninth-winningest team in NCAA Division II history and the 26th winningest team this decade. The Ichabods are 450-203 since joining the NCAA Division II ranks, which is the most since the 1989-90 season in the MIAA.

Home sweet home - the Ichabods In Lee Arena . . .
The Ichabods are 350-64 (.848) all-time in Lee Arena - the 27th season of play. The Ichabods recorded a school-best 28-game winning streak from Nov. 19, 1993 to Feb. 8, 1995 in Lee Arena.

Washburn will return home to face Truman in a make up game on Feb. 14 before facing Missouri Southern on Feb. 17 in Lee Arena. Washburn travels to Pittsburg State on Feb. 19 before coming back home to Topeka for Senior Night on Feb. 23 against Emporia State. Washburn will then wrap up the regular season at Lincoln on Feb. 26 in Jefferson City. Three of the Ichabods' final five games following the SBU game are at home, where the Ichabods are 9-1 this season.
