Ichabods return home for date with Bulldogs on Valentine's Day

Countdown to tip . . .
The Washburn Ichabods return home for a mini two-game home stand as they will face Truman in a Valentine's Day match up in Lee Arena starting at 7:30 p.m. The Ichabods (14-7, 11-6 MIAA) are coming off a come-from-behind win at Southwest Baptist 87-81 after trailing as by as many as 14 points marking their first double-digit rally for a win since a 17-point comeback against Missouri Southern on Feb. 19, 2009 at home. Truman (6-15, 4-13 MIAA) topped the Ichabods in the first meeting this seasoon in Kirksville, 83-78 on Dec. 11 and dropped a 89-79 decision at home to Nebraska-Omaha last time out. Washburn will face Missouri Southern on a rare Thursday game.

The Coaches . . .
Washburn Ichabod head basketball coach Bob Chipman is in his 32nd season at the helm of the Ichabod basketball program. Chipman is the winningest coach in school history and in 2006-07 he became the second winningest coach as a member of the MIAA. Chipman is 692-285 (.710) overall and he has 451 wins since the Ichabods joined the MIAA - the most of any teams in the league since the 1991-92 season. In home games, Chipman has amassed a 404-76 (.840) record going 350-64 in Lee Arena and 54-12 in Whiting Fieldhouse. Chipman is 11th amongst all NCAA II coaches in winning percentage who have coached at least 10 seasons. Among that group, he is second in all-time coaching victories in active coaches in career victories. Among all coaches who have at least 10 years experience in DII, he is 25th in winning percentage and seventh in victories. He is the third active winningest coach in NCAA Division II and 10th in winning percentage and his 692 coaching wins is 28th all-time among all NCAA coaches at all levels. At Washburn he has led the Ichabods to 11 conference regular season titles (9 MIAA), 10 NCAA Tournament appearances and the 1987 NAIA National Championship. Chipman is 35-13 against Truman.
Truman head coach Jack Schrader is in his 16th season on the Bulldog bench. Truman has made seven appearances in the MIAA postseason tournament. He has a 164-270 career record and, in 1998-99, led the team to one of the best seasons in school history, which concluded with an appearance in the NCAA Division II semifinals. Truman claimed the MIAA postseason tournament championship that year and Schrader was named the conference's co-coach of the year and the NABC Regional Coach of the Year. He is 9-23 against the Ichabods. 
    
Last time out for the Ichabods . . .
(Feb. 12) BOLIVAR, Mo. -- The Washburn Ichabods rallied from a 14-point deficit to capture the program's 1,400th win in an 87-81 win over Southwest Baptist snapping a two-game losing streak winning in Bolivar for the first time since the 2004-05 season.
Washburn cut the lead to two a 53-51 on a 3-pointer by De'Andre Washington and then he would tie the score with 10:06 to go with a couple of free throws clawing back from the 14-point defecit.Washburn took a 57-56 lead with 8:33 to go on a free throw by Logan Stutz but a 3-pointer by SBU gave the Bearcats a 59-57 lead just over eight minutes to play.
The Ichabod retied the score with 7:57 to go after a pair of free throws by Washington at 59-59 and they would take the lead on a lay up by Alex North with 7:15 to go in the game. After an SBU miss, Stutz would hit a lay up of his own on an assist by Jadarren Mumpfield giving Washburn a 63-59 lead with 6:40 to go.
A 3-pointer by Mumpfield pushed the lead to six at 66-60 with 5:40 to go in the game. After SBU came up empty on its next possession, Washburn's Stutz picked up a putback off an Ichabod miss and scored going to the line putting Washburn up 69-60 with five minutes to go.
A pair of free throws by Nate Daniels capped a 14-1 run putting Washburn up 71-60. SBU cut the lead to seven at 73-66 with 3:30 to go after a drive by Tre Smith.
Tomas Brock went to the line and hit two free throws for SBU cutting the lead to five at 73-68 with 3:14 to go. After each team came up empty on their next possession. After an Ichabod timeout, Virgil Philistin scored on a driving lay up and was fouled after a Bearcat turnover. Philitin hit one free throw putting Washburn up 76-68 with 1:52 to go.
The Bearcats were fouled and hit both free throws cutting the Washburn lead to six at 76-60 with just over 90 seconds to play. Philistin was fouled and hit both free throws with 1:12 to go putting Washburn up eight at 78-70.
A 3-pointer by SBU's Smith cut the lead to five at 78-73 with 24.6 to go in the game. A dunk by Stutz put Washburn up 85-81. Stutz finished up the game with a pair of free throws locking up the 87-81 win.
The Ichabods trailed by as many as 14 in the first half at 37-23 before the Ichabods before Washburn's Mitch Allen and Bobby hit back-to-back 3-pointers cutting the lead to eight before the end of the half. In the opening 20 minutes, the Ichabods were outshot from the free throw line 18 to 8 as SBU connected on 14 compared to eight for the Ichabods. Washburn was 10 of 29 from the field while the Bearcats were 11 of 24.
Washington led the Ichabods with 22 points going 13 of 18 from the free throw line and Stutz finished with 19 and Philistin scored 11 off the bench. Lane Barlow scored 17 to lead four Bearcats in double figures.
Washburn shot a blistering 68 percent from the field in the second half hitting 15 of 22 attempts including 4 of 9 3-point attempts. The Ichabods finished the game 29 of 39 from the free throw line going 23 of 31 in the second half after attempting only eight in the first 20 minutes. Each team had 34 rebounds.

Series history with Truman State . . .
Monday's meeting will be the 55th between the two schools with Washburn holding a 37-17 lead in the series. The Ichabods have won six of the last seven meetings. The series dates back to 1956-57 and the two have played each other every year since 1989-90. Two of the lowest combined scoring games in WU history came against Truman recently. On January 13, 2007, the Bulldogs won 60-45 as they combined for 105 points, the second-lowest scoring output since WU joined NCAA II in 1989-90. On January 19, 2008 they scored 109 points in a 59-50 WU win. That was the third lowest scoring game in DII history for WU. Washburn is 13-8 against the Bulldogs on the road and 27-9 in MIAA contests against Truman in Lee Arena. Washburn has won the last four meetings with the Bulldogs in Topeka as Truman has not won in Lee Arena since an 81-72 win on Jan. 28, 2006.
 
Last meeting with Truman State . . .
(Dec. 11, 2010) KIRKSVILLE, Mo. -- The Washburn Ichabods were able to cut a 13-point Truman lead to four late in the second half but could not get any closer in a 83-78  loss to the Bulldogs. Washburn drops to 5-3 overall and 2-2 in MIAA play.
The Ichabods, who had their seven-game winning streak over Truman (3-5, 1-3 MIAA) snapped in the loss, led at the half by two at 36-34, fell behind 55-49 with 11:36 to go in the game before trimming the Bulldog lead back to four at 82-78 with 11 seconds to go on a 3-pointer by De'Andre Washington. Following an Ichabod timeout, Truman hit 1 of 2 free throws and the Ichabods missed their final three-point attempt as time expired on the Ichabods.
Washington led the Ichabods with a season-high 29 points on 11 of 19 shooting including 5 of 11 from 3-point range. He also added nine rebounds and six assists for the Ichabods in 38 minutes of play. Lgoan Stutz scored 12 points on 6 of 10 shooting and Jeff Reid also had 12 on 5 of 11 shooting with 2 of 5 from 3-point range.
Alex Henderon led four Bulldogs in double figures with 23 points. He finished 10 of 11 from the free throw line while adding eight rebounds. Tom Norton scored 19. Vesko Filchev had 13 and Ethan Freeman scored 10.
Truman outshot the Ichabods from the field connecting on 27 of 53 field goal attempts, including a 12 of 25 performance from behind the 3-point arc. The Ichabods were 33 of 72 from the field for a 46 percent average hitting 9 of 29 from 3-point range. However Truman was 17 of 25 from the free throw line while the Ichabods were an anemic 3 of 11 from the free throw line for a 27 percent average. The Ichabods were outrebounded by the Bulldogs 40 to 34. Washburn did only commit only five turnovers compared to 11 by Truman. 

About Truman . . .
The Bulldogs are 6-15 overall and 4-13 in MIAA play. They have lost six of their last seven games entering the game with the Ichabods winless on the road going 0-9 on the road and 9-7 in MIAA play. Alex Henderson leads four Bulldogs in double figure scoring with 14.8 ppg. Ethan Freeman is averaging nearly a double double with 12.0 ppg and 9.7 rpg. Tom Norton is scoring 10.4 ppg and Vesko Flichev is scoring 10.0 ppg. Truman is scoring 70.7 ppg while allowing 75.9 ppg this season.

TSU Sports Information -- (Feb. 12, 2011) KIRKSVILLE - - Guards Alex Henderson and Tom Norton both set new career-highs in points, and forward Ethan Freeman was two assists shy of a triple-double, but the Truman men's basketball team dropped an 89-79 home decision to a balanced Nebraska-Omaha squad on Saturday afternoon.
Henderson scored 26 points, while Norton came off the bench to drop 21 behind five three-pointers for Truman (6-15, 4-13 MIAA), who now hits the road for four straight games encompassing the next week and a half. The Bulldogs travel to Topeka, Kan., on Monday (Feb. 14) night for a makeup game with Washburn University at 7:30 pm.
After the Bulldogs carried a 43-35 lead into the intermission, fueled by a 55% shooting effort and seven three-pointers, UNO (15-7, 12-6 MIAA) went on a 17-9 run in the first five minutes of the second half to draw even at 52 apiece. The Bulldogs stayed within striking distance the rest of the way, as the game headed to the free throw line for an extended stretch of minutes midway through the half.
The Mavs shot 73% (22-for-30) from the charity stripe for the game, with Truman converting just 19-of-31 (61%) of its free throw chances.
A Brian Nwelue jumper with 5:10 to play pulled Truman to within seven, 75-68, but back-to-back baskets by UNO's Tyler Bullock extended the Mavs' lead back to double-digits, which it would remain the rest of the way.
Norton (5) and Henderson (3) combined for all eight of Truman's three-point baskets, as the 'Dogs shot 8-for-19 from long-range for the game. The duo each added a pair of assists and shot 56% from the floor.
Freeman, the MIAA's leading rebounder, continued his season-long tear on the glass by notching his 10th double-double of the year with 14 points and ten rebounds. The senior also added eight assists with just one turnover to maintain his team-high in assists (3.9 per game).
Junior Vesko Filchev added 12 points and five rebounds, while Newlue pulled down five boards and swatted three Maverick shots.
UNO put five players in double-figures, led by Mitch Albers' 25 and Bullock's 21. The Mavs shot 47% from the floor and out-rebounded Truman, 44-32.

(Feb. 9, 2011) INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- The Washburn Ichabods dropped to ninth in the latest NCAA South Central Regional Rankings which were released today by the NCAA. The regional rankings will be released each Wednesday for the remainder of the season with the top eight teams in the final rankings on Sunday, March 6 qualifying for the South Central Regional at a campus site to be determined.

The Ichabods are 451-203 since joining the NCAA Division II ranks, which is the most since the 1989-90 season in the MIAA.

Home sweet home - the Ichabods In Lee Arena . . .
The Ichabods are 350-64 (.848) all-time in Lee Arena - the 27th season of play. The Ichabods recorded a school-best 28-game winning streak from Nov. 19, 1993 to Feb. 8, 1995 in Lee Arena.

Washburn will face Missouri Southern on Feb. 17 in Lee Arena before travelling to Pittsburg State on Feb. 19 to battle the Gorillas before coming back home to Topeka for Senior Night on Feb. 23 against Emporia State. Washburn will then wrap up the regular season at Lincoln on Feb. 26 in Jefferson City before starting the MIAA Championship Tournament on March 3 in Kansas City.
