Ichabods to face #8 Lions on Thursday in Lee Arena

Countdown to tip . . .
The Washburn Ichabods will play host to the league-leading and No. 8-ranked Missouri Southern Lions Thursday night in Lee Arena beginning at 7:30 p.m. Washburn (15-7, 12-6 MIAA) is in a tie for third place in the MIAA race while the Lions have a two-game lead on Fort Hays State. Washburn is coming off a 72-61 Valentine's Day win over Truman while the Lions (20-2, 16-2 MIAA) have been off since a 92-75 win over Emporia State on Feb. 12.

The Coaches . . .
Washburn Ichabod head basketball coach Bob Chipman is in his 32nd season at the helm of the Ichabod basketball program. Chipman is the winningest coach in school history and in 2006-07 he became the second winningest coach as a member of the MIAA. Chipman is 693-285 (.710) overall and he has 452 wins since the Ichabods joined the MIAA - the most of any teams in the league since the 1991-92 season. In home games, Chipman has amassed a 405-76 (.840) record going 351-64 in Lee Arena and 54-12 in Whiting Fieldhouse. Chipman is 11th amongst all NCAA II coaches in winning percentage who have coached at least 10 seasons. Among that group, he is second in all-time coaching victories in active coaches in career victories. Among all coaches who have at least 10 years experience in DII, he is 25th in winning percentage and seventh in victories. He is the third active winningest coach in NCAA Division II and 10th in winning percentage and his 693 coaching wins is 28th all-time among all NCAA coaches at all levels. At Washburn he has led the Ichabods to 11 conference regular season titles (9 MIAA), 10 NCAA Tournament appearances and the 1987 NAIA National Championship. Chipman is 37-20 against Missouri Southern.
Missouri Southern head coach Robert Corn has guided the Lions to 18 Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association Postseason Tournament berths (13 straight) and two trips to the NCAA Division II Tournament. The 1999-00 Division II Bulletin National Coach of the Year, he holds a career record of 347-272 (.559) at Southern, and is the winningest head coach in Lions basketball history in his 22nd season. A 1978 graduate of Southern, he has led Southern to six 20-win seasons. 
    
Last time out for the Ichabods . . .
(Feb. 14) TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Ichabods picked up a Valentine's Day win over Truman topping the Bulldogs 72-61 in Lee Arena winning their sixth-straight home game.
Washburn led entering the halftime break 27-20 over Truman (6-16, 4-14 MIAA) behind Logan Stutz's 15 first half points after going 6 of 9 from the field with five rebounds. Coming out of the break, Truman cut the lead to one three times with the last coming at 33-32 before the Ichabods pushed the lead back to seven at 39-32 with 14:24 to go in the game on a lay up by Jadarren Mumpfield. After a bucket by Truman's Isaac Gardner, Bobby Chipman pushed the lead back to seven before Gardner scored five straight points  and Ethan Freeman put Truman up one at 42-41 with 9:43 to play in the game. De'Andre Washington scored on a lay up returning the lead back to Washburn before Vesko Flichev put the Bulldogs back up one.
After a media timeout, Washington tied the score with a free throw and Jeff Reid put Washburn up two with a layup of his own. A 3-pointer by Alex Henderson returned the lead to the visitors beofre the Ichabods' Mitch Allen put Washburn up two with a 3-pointer, but the lead was short-lived as Tom Norton hit the Bulldogs back up one at 50-49 with 6:58 to go in the game. Washburn went up for good on its next possession on a 3-pointer by Mumpfield and streched the lead to as many as seven on a swipe and steal by Nate Daniels with 2:44 to play. Truman would get no closer than five the rest of the way as the Ichabods went on for the 72-61 win.
Stutz finished with his seventh double double of his Washburn career and his fifth this season with a game-high 24 points and 10 rebounds. Mumpfield scored 12 with all dozen coming in the second half. Gardner and Freeman scored 15 each to pace Truman.
Washburn finished 44 percent from the field hitting 27 of 62 shots including 15 of 28 (54 percent) in the second half. Truman also shot 54 percent in the second half (14 fo 26) going 22 of 53 in the game (42 percent). Washburn finished 15 of 20 from the free throw line while Truman was 8 of 12.
The Ichabods held a 39 to 30 advantage on the glass turning 16 offensive rebounds into 22 second chance points while outscoring Truman in the paint 44 to 18.

Series history with Missouri Southern . . .
Thursday's meeting will be the 69th between these two schools in a series that dates back to 1968-69. Washburn leads the all-time series 44-24.  Washburn is 21-12 in MIAA games against the Lions and 9-10 on the road against MSSU since joining the league in 1989-90. The Ichabods have lost five in a row on the road to the Lions with their last win coming in Joplin on Jan. 21, 2006 in a 60-56 win. The two teams have met at least once a year since 1976-77. The Ichabods are 3-2 against the Lions in the MIAA Tournament. In games played in Topeka, the Ichabods are 26-8 overall and 19-5 in games played in Lee Arena. The Lions have won three of the last four games played in Lee Arena including last season's 86-69 win over the Ichabods on Feb. 17, 2010.
 
Last meeting with Missouri Southern . . .
(Jan. 8, 2011) JOPLIN, Mo. -- The Washburn Ichabods jumped out to a 10-point lead at Missouri Southern but let the lead slip in a 90-73 loss to the Lions.
The Ichbods an early lead at 27-17 on a lay up by De'Andre Washington, who led the Ichabods with 22 points hitting 7 of 13 shots including 4 of 8 3-pointers on the afternoon. From that lead the Lions would go on a 14-0 run taking a 31-27 lead and would go into the locker room with a 46-40 advantage. Washburn shot a blistering 64 percent from the field in the first half hitting 16 of 25 attempts from the field and 5 of 12 from 3-point range.
In the second half the Ichabods trimmed the lead back to six on a 3-pointer by Jeff Reid with 16:36 remaining but they would get no closer as the Lions built a lead as many as 20 in the second half with 8:01 remaining.
Following Washington's 22 points, Logan Stutz had 20 on 8 of 10 shooting from the field. Skyler Bowling had 30 points to lead the Lions as he was 16 of 17 from the free throw line. As a team the Ichabods were 12 of 19 and the Lions attempted 43 free throws compared to 19 for the Ichabods hitting 12.
The Ichabods were 26 of 55 from the field shooting 47 percent from the field while the Lions finished 27 of 52 for a 52 percent mark. 

About Missouri Southern . . .
The Lions are 20-2 overall and 16-2 in the MIAA ranked No. 8 in the NABC top 25 poll after beating Emporia State 92-75 last time out on Feb. 12. The Lions have won their last five overall not falling since Jan. 26 in a 75-65 loss at Central Missouri. Skyler Bowlin leads the Lions in scoring at 19.2 ppg while and has put up back-to-back 30-point games in their last two outtings. Jason Adams is scoring 18.6 ppg and Keane Thomann is scoring 14.3 ppg. Thomann is also averaging 7.4 rebounds per game. The Lions are shooting 51.4 percent from the field hitting 659 of 1282 shots while going 129 of 333 from 3-point range connecting on 39 percent of their attempts. From the free throw line the Lions are 394 of 550 hitting 72 percent of their shots. The Lions are scoring 83.7 ppg while allowing 69.5 ppg. The Lions are also averaging 10.2 steals per game while forcing 17.8 turnovers per game.
   
Last time out for Missouri Southern . . .
MSSU Sports Information -- (Feb. 12, 2011) Joplin, Mo. -- Skyler Bowlin tied a career high with eight three's and set a new career high with 12 assists as the 11th ranked Missouri Southern basketball team defeated Emporia State, 95-72 tonight at the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center.
Southern (20-2, 16-2 MIAA) wins game No. 20 on the season for the first time since the 2002-03 season. The Lions also put another game in-between themselves and Fort Hays State as the Tigers lost on the road at Central Missouri today giving Southern a two-game lead in the MIAA.
Bowlin scored 30 points on 9-15 shooting, including 8-13 from the three-point line and 4-4 from the charity stripe. He tied his own school record with eight three's in a game, while going over 200 in his career at Southern (now 201). Bowlin also went over 1,500 points in his career as he now has 1,512.
Jason Adams scored 21 as he dazzled the crowd with an array of dunks on the night. He went 8-14 from the field and 4-6 from the free-throw line, while pulling down nine rebounds. Keane Thomann had 20 points and six rebounds.
Emporia (11-13, 8-10 MIAA) was led in scoring by Adam Holdhaus with 21 points on 8-11 scoring. Michael Tyler scored 17 and pulled down 11 rebounds.
Southern jumped out to a 15-8 lead after a three from Bowlin as the senior hit his first five three pointers in a row. The lead was 14 after another three from Bowlin made the score 33-19 with 8:24 left. Another three from Bowlin, his sixth of the half, made the score 49-30 with just under two minutes left.
The Lions' lead was as high as 24 in the second half after another three from Bowlin made the score 68-44 with 15:35 to go. The Hornets trimmed the Lions' lead to 12 (85-73) after a free-throw from Tyler, but that would be as close as they would get.
Southern shot 57 percent from the field and 48 percent from long-range, while making 78 percent of its free-throws. The Lions led from start to finish in the game.

The regional rankings will be released each Wednesday for the remainder of the season with the top eight teams in the final rankings on Sunday, March 6 qualifying for the South Central Regional at a campus site to be determined.

The Ichabods are 351-64 (.848) all-time in Lee Arena - the 27th season of play. The Ichabods recorded a school-best 28-game winning streak from Nov. 19, 1993 to Feb. 8, 1995 in Lee Arena.

Washburn will travel to Pittsburg State on Feb. 19 to battle the Gorillas before coming back home to Topeka for Senior Night on Feb. 23 against Emporia State. Washburn will then wrap up the regular season at Lincoln on Feb. 26 in Jefferson City before starting the MIAA Championship Tournament on March 3 in Kansas City.
