The Washburn Ichabods will hit the road for a battle with the Pittsburg State Gorillas on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. in John Lance Arena. Washburn (16-7, 13-6 MIAA) is coming off a 71-66 over No. 8-ranked Missouri Southern on Thursday night while the Gorillas (13-10, 9-10 MIAA) have been idle since dropping an 82-81 decision at Emporia State. The Ichabods are in a tie for third place in the conference standings with Nebraska-Omaha, but hold a tie-breaker over the Mavericks by virtue of their season-sweep over UNO. Following the game with the Gorillas, the Ichabods will return home to face Emporia State on senior night Feb. 23.

Washburn Ichabod head basketball coach
Bob Chipman is in his 32nd season at the helm of the Ichabod basketball program. Chipman is the winningest coach in school history and in 2006-07 he became the second winningest coach as a member of the MIAA. Chipman is 694-285 (.710) overall and he has 453 wins since the Ichabods joined the MIAA - the most of any teams in the league since the 1991-92 season. In home games, Chipman has amassed a 406-76 (.840) record going 352-64 in Lee Arena and 54-12 in Whiting Fieldhouse. Chipman is 11th amongst all NCAA II coaches in winning percentage who have coached at least 10 seasons. Among that group, he is second in all-time coaching victories in active coaches in career victories. Among all coaches who have at least 10 years experience in DII, he is 25th in winning percentage and seventh in victories. He is the third active winningest coach in NCAA Division II and 10th in winning percentage and his 694 coaching wins is 28th all-time among all NCAA coaches at all levels. At Washburn he has led the Ichabods to 11 conference regular season titles (9 MIAA), 10 NCAA Tournament appearances and the 1987 NAIA National Championship. Chipman is 46-16 against Pittsburg State.
Pittsburg State's Kevin Muff is in his first season leading the Gorillas. Muff (Kansas State, '86) became the Gorillas' 14th all-time head coach on Apr. 5, 2010, after spending 12 seasons at Cloud County Community College, where he helped the Thunderbirds to an average of 21 wins in each of the last five seasons. He is 13-10 overall and 0-1 against Washburn.

(Feb. 17) TOPEKA, Kan. -- Ichabod senior
De'Andre Washington scored Washburn's final six points all from the free throw line in a 71-66 win over the No. 8-ranked Missouri Southern Lions Thursday night in Lee Arena.
After the ninth tie score of the game,
Jadarren Mumpfield broke the tie with a 3-pointer putting Washburn up 65-62 with 2:43 to play. But the Lions (20-3, 16-3 MIAA) cut the Ichabod lead back to one after a pair of free throws by Marquis Addison with 2:25 remaining in the game. Following a pair of free throws by Washington putting Washburn back up two with 1:53 to go, the Lions again went to the charity stripe and Jason Adams connected on two tosses with 25 seconds left trimming the Ichabod lead back to one. After a foul by the Lions, Washington went back to the line to hit two more with 23 seconds left staking the Ichabods to a 69-66 lead. A 3-point attempt by Adams was off the mark and Washington pulled down the rebound with 12 seconds left hitting both free throws putting Washburn up five at 71-66. Skyler Bowlin's 3-point attempt rimmed out and Washington picked up his game-high 12th and final rebound of the night dribbling out the clock in the win.
The win was the Ichabods' highest win over a ranked opponent since they knocked off a then-No.3-ranked Central Missouri in the first round of the 2010 MIAA Championship Tournament in Kansas City.
In the first half, the teams entered the locker room tied at 35 after the Lions' Adams hit a pair of free throws with 0.8 left on the first half clock.
Logan Stutz tied for game-high honors with Missouri Southern's Keane Thommann who each scored 20 points. Stutz recorded his sixth double double of the season and the eighth of his career adding 10 rebounds. Stutz also recorded a career-high five steals. Washington had 12 points with 12 rebounds and nine assists in the game.
Jeff Reid scored 11 points and Mumpfield scored 10.
Alex North recorded career-highs of nine points, nine rebounds playing 29 minutes.
Washburn was outshot by the Lions 51 percent to 37 percent as the Lions finished 23 of 45 from the field while the Ichabods were 25 of 68. Washburn dominated on the glass outrebounding the Lions 45 to 26 including a 24 to 4 advantage on the offensive boards. The Ichabods turned the advantage into a 21 to 5 edge in second chance points.
The win wil help bolster the Ichabods' postseason fate as Washburn entered the game No. 8 in the latest NCAA South Central Regional Rankings while the Lions were second in the latest poll.
Series history with Pittsburg State . . .
Saturday's meeting is the 165th between the two schools and Washburn leads the series, 92-72. The Ichabods have won the last six meetings. The Ichabods are 26-2 in Lee Arena against PSU and 24-12 against the Gorillas in MIAA play. The home team is 24-6 in the last 30 regular season meetings, dating back to 1996-97. The series goes back to 1919-20 and it has been played at least once a year since 1941-42. Since the 1956-57 season, the Ichabods are 23-29 in Pittsburg while going 7-10 in Pittsburg since becoming a MIAA of the MIAA. The Ichabods have won the last two meetings played in Pittsburg.

(Jan. 12, 2011) TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Ichabods turned a 29-28 halftime deficit into an 82-66 win over Pittsburg State Wednesday night in Lee Arena.
After shooting 33 percent in the first half after hitting 9 of 27 shots and 1 of 12 3-point attempts, the Ichabods turned it around in the second half shooting 62 percent hitting 16 of 26 attempts including a 7 of 14 performance from behind the 3-point line.
Coming out of the break trailing by one, Washburn opened the second half on a 13-4 run with two 3-pointers and a jumper by
Jeff Reid, a 3-pointer by
De'Andre Washington and a lay up by
Logan Stutz pushing Washburn to a 41-33 lead capped by a Reid three with 16:24 to go in the game. The Gorillas cut the lead back to four twice in the stanza, the final time at 46-42 before Washburn ripped off a 20-3 run over the next five minutes wrapped up by a couple of free throws by
Nate Daniels giving Washburn a 66-45 lead. Washburn would go on to lead by as many as 23 in the half on another 3-pointer by Washington at 71-48. Pittsburg State would get no closer than 15 the rest of the way.
The Gorillas led by as many as eight in the first half at 28-20 on a jumper by Logan Jones before Washburn finished the half on the 8-1 run beginning a total run of 21-5 over the final two minutes of the first half and first four minutes of the second half.
In the opening half, both team struggled from the field as Washburn shot 33 percent and the Gorillas were 13 of 30 from the field. They improved to 44 percent in the second half finishing the game 25 of 57 for a 44 pecent average. Washburn finished 25 of 53 for 47 percent. After shooting 9 of 18 from the free throw line the Ichabods were 15 of 25 in the second half finishing 24 of 43 for the game compared to 13 of 23 for Pitt State.
Washington led the Ichabods with his first double double of the season with game-highs of 23 points and 14 rebounds. He was 6 of 13 from the field, 3 of 7 from 3-point range and 8 of 12 from the free throw line. He also had a game-high six assists all in 34 minutes of play. Stutz finished with 21 points and six rebounds. Reid was also in double figures with 16 points hitting 3 of 7 shots from 3-point range.
Eric Ray led the Gorillas with 15 points. Andra Bailey had 13 points and JaVon McGee finished with 12.

The Gorillas are 13-10 overall and 9-10 in MIAA play after dropping four of their last five games. The Gorillas are 7-3 at home this season. PSU Sports Information -- (Feb. 16, 2011) EMPORIA, Kan. -- Emporia State charged back from an 18-point first-half deficit to hold off Pitt State down the stretch and claim a 82-81 victory Wednesday (Feb. 16) at William L. White Auditorium.
Pitt State (13-10, 9-10 MIAA) led 40-22 with 4:30 to play in the first half, but the Gorillas couldn't sustain their quick early pace.
Emporia State (12-13, 9-10 MIAA) rallied to tie the game at 61-61 with 8:23 to play in the game and the Hornets eventually pushed in front in the game's waning minutes.
The Hornets' Michael Tyler made a pair of free throws with 13.3 seconds remaining to give ESU an 82-78 lead.
Pitt State's Adrian Herrera, who hit six 3-pointers in the contest, dropped in a guarded trey with 1.3 seconds left to provide the game's final margin.
Logan Jones and Drake Green added 13 points apiece for the Gorillas while JaVon McGee finished with a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Xavier Burnette scored a game-high 19 points for Emporia State, which shot 56.3 percent from the field (27 of 48) in the game. Tyler added 14, while Robert Moores chipped in with 12 and Adam Holthaus added 10 for the Hornets.

Ichabods in the latest NCAA South Central Regional Rankings . . .
(Feb. 16, 2011) INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- The Washburn Ichabods climbed from ninth to eighth in the latest NCAA South Central Regional Rankings which were released today. The Ichabods will host the No. 2 team in the region, Missouri Southern, on Thursday in Lee Arena at 7:30 p.m.
Washburn went 1-1 last week falling at Central Missouri and then winning at Southwest Baptist on Saturday. The Ichabods won their first game of the week topping Truman at home on Feb. 14. Following Thursday's game with Missouri Southern, the Ichabods will travel on Saturday to face Pittsburg State.
The regional rankings will be released each Wednesday for the remainder of the season with the top eight teams in the final rankings on Sunday, March 6 qualifying for the South Central Regional at a campus site to be determined. 1.
